Breakfast Topic: How do you like Overwatch’s competitive mode?

For me, Overwatch was a total success. The characters were awesome, the community was new and not drowning in toxicity, the gameplay kept things fresh respawn after respawn. I was doing pretty well stats-wise too, though I do have a tendency to commit to YOLO rushes more often than I should. Playing characters that can be slippery like Lucio or Tracer, or tanky like Roadhog helps compensate for that, but I’m working on that to tighten up my play. I’m definitely not about to go pro anything, but my goal in gaming is always to have fun, and it was definitely fun.

So what’s up with that ominous past tense?

At first, Competitive Mode was fun. The placement matches I played went pretty well. I won 7 out of 10, which set me at rank 51. Teams did a great job of communicating, players swapped to counter without even being prompted most of the time, and the losses I got were mostly close, fun games. My rank maybe should’ve been higher than that, due to the bugs associated with King of the Hill maps — two of my wins — but hey, they fixed that! No big deal! Let the good times roll, right?

However, I’ve noticed since then my games have gotten worse. Notably, my block list has gotten longer and longer as the people I’m grouped become more apt to insult my mother. Don’t do that. She makes a killer mac and cheese and she’s usually pretty nice. These poor experiences are reflecting on my rank, but more importantly it’s making the game way less fun. Even when I queue up for Quick Play, my shiny eyed optimism doesn’t quite show up anymore.

That said, I’m probably going to play this season until I get a golden gun because, come on man. Golden gun.

So how are you doing in Overwatch’s Competitive Mode? Did you try it out yet? Are you rising through the ranks? Most importantly, is it still fun for you?
