The Queue: Everybody here’s trying on new faces

Happy patch day, everyone! I’m writing this from the past, so I have no idea if the patch’s launch has gone smoothly or horribly awry. Maybe it’s somewhere in between. Regardless, I hope patch day finds you well and that you’re not one of the classes whose changes are painful to endure.

Let’s Queue, eh?

MISTAH JAY IS STARTING US OFF THIS TIME:

2BE: Zul vs Ner’zhul

As has been pointed out, there are multiple versions of these characters. But I’m gonna go with AU Ner’zhul and BFA-era Zul. Objectively, I think Zul is too crafty to get outdone by Ner’zhul… but subjectively, I hate how boring Ner’zhul’s ending was in Warlords and had always hoped killing him in the spirit realm (or whatever it was) would mean he came back later on.

So that’s my headcanon, and that’s what he does here, and that’s how he wins. Bing, bang, boom.

TAUREN IT UP IS HITTING THE SAME POINT I’VE HIT:

Q4tQ: Looking over that fun article of all the fun mounts we’re going to find in this fun new patch, it hit me that I kind of have more than enough mounts. I don’t know what it is; mount collecting is the kind of thing that shouldn’t really stop. But, if I get that bee I might vary well pass on pretty much everything else. Partially because my characters are often in-character so I find myself restricted in mount choice anyways, but also I find a certain level of bonding with certain mounts. I’m used to their animation quirks or the sounds they make, and making a change now would feel odd.

Do you have enough mounts?

I don’t know if it’s mounts specifically, but at some point, it hit me that I won’t collect everything — they’re adding so many collectibles so fast that it’s nearly impossible for me to keep up. I used to love the collecting game, but now it’s just sort of a thing that exists in the background for me to do.

Mount-wise, until there’s a mount that can walk on water, fly, repair my gear, let me gather herbs without dismounting, and transmog my gear… well, I’m pretty happy with what I have. Every so often, a really cool mount will come along, and I’ll use that for a bit — but I always cycle back to my Water Strider and Sky Golem.

SPENCER MORGAN, WE CAN’T JUST EAT EVERYBODY WHO WE WANT THINGS FROM:

Q4tQ: Finals are fast approaching, Mitch. Any chance you can eat my professors so I get a free passing grade? There’s half a vegan taco and a bottle of sunkist in it for you.

Look, I love me a vegan taco and bottle of Sunkist, but eating professors is wrong. I mean, in some cases, it’s probably okay. Like, if they give everyone in the class a lower grade than they’ve been earning all semester because they want things to fit a specific curve. Or if that same professor basically never showed up to lecture. Or if said professor was also kinda like a creepy Mr. Rogers.

That is, of course, a totally random and made up example of an Orgo 1 lab professor, but in most cases, it’s not okay to eat your professors.

PUMABACKUP WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT EMBARGOES:

How long has BfA been out, and what’s the standard embargo time limit on spoilers these days?

Here’s the thing — we try our best to avoid discussing spoilers (or labeling them when we do) for content that’s been out, I dunno, less than a month? But we’re a Blizzard fansite. Walking on eggshells to avoid spoiling things for months after they’ve been out is, ultimately, a disservice to our audience at large. But there are still people — and I don’t mean anyone in particular here, to be clear — who get really mad when we “spoil” something. I hope people respect the fact that we really do try our best to respect spoiler spaces, but those that don’t? Maybe avoid a site that specifically talks Blizzard until you’re okay with being spoiled.

To your specific question: I guess I’d ask myself, “How long would it take the average player to complete this content?” If it’s been longer than that, it’s probably fair game. If there are two sides (like Horde and Alliance) and each takes X amount of time, I’d probably either put a notice or wait 2X before openly discussing.

Again, we try our best. But BFA has been out almost four months and today’s the day 8.1 hits and progresses the story. That’s a fair sign Blizzard themselves expects that you’ve done all the story content you’d hoped, imo.

CAPTAIN CAKEWALK THE HOOTMEOW HAS A LONG NAME:

Q4tQ: I tend to mix things up a lot when playing games so I’ll play say Fallout and then play Warframe and vice versa. This has gotten me into a few funny situations where I’m in Warframe, getting shot by enemies and I go to instinctively hit Q for V.A.T.S but it never works as I’m in a different game. Has anyone here had that happen and if you could take one single ability and put it into another game, what would it be and why? V.A.T.S for me would be awesome for picking out hidden enemies in Warframe. :D

Oh, this has absolutely happened to me! Lately, it’s not quite that bad, but I’ve definitely hit Tab expecting to open the map (which it does in Fortnite) only to be met with a target unintentionally in my sights. Similarly, I’m so used to being able to build from place to place in Fortnite that I sometimes approach a cliff and it’ll take me half a second to recognize that I can’t build a staircase to get to the top.

OMEDON, I HAD TO CUT DOWN YOUR QUESTION A BIT, BUT THE CRUX IS STILL THERE:

Q4tQ: Do you feel that the single character/spec playstyle is supported or intended any more in WoW?

I don’t think Blizzard intends players to play a single spec, no. At least, they don’t balance around it — not entirely. They’ll never leave a single spec waaaaaay in the dust, but if a DPS class has a “good” spec available and an “okay” spec available, I think they’re happy with min/maxers going with the good spec, even if they don’t prefer it.

As for single character, I think Legion definitely intended for us to see a bunch of different stories, all told via different classes. For BFA — and their philosophy at large — I think it’s more or less intended you have one main for “current” content, and then alt support becomes easier as time passes. I mean, that’s hardly a posit, either. It’s just what they do. But I don’t think they support a playstyle of having loads and loads of alts until more time has passed.

In general, WoW has a lot of players with a lot of different playstyles. Blizzard is never going to lean too hard into one style or another, but I don’t think they’ll shy away from trying to support as many as possible, either.

HUSSKIES, YOU GET THIS ONE TODAY:

Hey guys! The office move is complete, so I’m back at my desk and in the queue :) What did I miss?

Yay! Congratulations on the move :) You missed, uhh… well, SPencer is outsourcing professor-eating but you probably saw that. Some people seem to have new avatars on the site. I thought about getting a haircut. Plans to bathe world in darkness now 63% complete. Anne got a dog. Nothing crazy.

KALCHEUS, I FEEL SILLY ABOUT THIS…

Q4tQ: Is it wrong for me to go with a different talent over Shadow Word: Void because I prefer the animation for Mind Blast?

Man, I can’t believe I never noticed the difference. I actually logged in to check — lo and behold, it’s much more float-y for SW:V.

There’s nothing wrong with looking good, though. Not ever.

That’s all for today! Hope y’all are enjoying the patch.
