This week's Lore Watch is based on a listener question, which mashes together two of Joe and Matt's favorite topics: Azeroth and Dungeons and Dragons. Specifically, this episode goes through doing just that: how they would play their way through a World of Warcraft-themed D&D campaign. They discuss their picks for the best tabletop system to play their way through a potential Azeroth-themed adventure, and then dive deep to discuss which small corner of Azeroth's history -- from setting to characters -- they'd like to experience in tabletop form.

hello and welcome to Lore Watch round table free form discussion about ling your favorite media I'm your host Joe
0:16
Perez one of several lore focused folks from Blizzard Watch and I've got my super co-host with me today Matt Rossy
0:22
How you doing today Matt Um currently staring at my Discord going "Don't trust
0:27
you It wouldn't be a recording if we didn't have some random technical complication
0:33
friends It just is how it is Uh so we are going to be doing a episode today
0:39
that's a a little bit different Uh this actually was born of a question that was
0:44
sent in from one of our listeners and we thank you for sending this in If you have topics or questions or something
0:52
you want us to talk about for any of our podcast be sure to send those in We do pay attention to them You can send them
0:57
in at podcastbasizardwatch.com Specify the show that it's for as well as any
1:02
special pronunciation of your name You can also hit us up on Discord We have the Q and podcast questions channel Same
1:09
rules apply as well as the patron Q and podcast questions channel where we tend to look there first as a way of saying
1:14
thank you for helping us keep the lights on You can also send us messages directly on Patreon and Liz will get
1:21
them to us We'll make sure she does it It's a thing But this is actually something that was sent in by Meron Uh
1:29
not so off-topic question for Lur Watch It's it's in the realm It's it's in between It skirts the line Uh would you
1:35
DM or play a D and D adventure set in Azeroth In a hypothetical scenario where
1:40
the answer is yes how would you like that adventure to be Set in the current retail era the classic era Warcraft
1:46
three times And one last question what race and class would your character be So this is something that I wanted to
1:52
like just kind of talk about in general because there was a Warcraft RPG Matt
1:58
and I both played it We both own copies of it It's something we've talked about a lot And with our Tavern Watch imprint
2:05
we've been playing a lot of tabletop games And it's only a matter of time before one of us at some point runs an
2:11
Azeroth style game for everybody So I'm going to start with a modification of
2:17
the question before we get into the actually answering it And it's with all of the systems available and all of the
2:24
growth that we've seen in the industry Is there one that you think would be best suited right now for Warcraft And
2:32
why Like if you were to run a Warcraft game do you have one that really sticks out to you Matt Uh there's a few actually I think that it would be
2:38
interesting Uh one is the um Lumen system uh or powered by light system the
2:44
one that does various it basically it's really good for creating a video game
2:49
atmosphere Uh I think one of the one of the games that was mentioned is Destiny It
2:55
actually the light game itself is basically Destiny Uh and then it also there's they have an Overwatch type as
3:02
well I forget what the name of that game is but it they do an Overwatch style game with it And I could see WoW except
3:09
that WoW is really complicated So if you're trying to like note fornotee
3:14
recreate World of Warcraft or you know that that's a that's a lot of work I
3:20
think it'd be easier to recreate Warcraft than World of Warcraft with it Um Mhm but I I could certainly see you
3:28
know that in terms of like that's a good system for if you want to have kind of a highowered you know World of Warcraft
3:35
characters get up there So if you wanted to to like you know do a kind of high-powered campaign that's a system I
3:41
think could be useful I think you know the various the variations on PBTA games
3:47
at this point like you there's so many different colors to PBTA and to games that are inspired by it Yeah For those
3:54
of you at home that's powered by the Apocalypse which is what we're going to be we're going to be playing an upcoming Masks game on Monster of the Week uh
4:02
Avatar uh the Last Air Bender Those systems are all based on that Honestly though and I'm gonna say this as this is
4:08
a system that is not a very big currently you know played by a lot of people system Um back in the 80s uh TSR
4:18
the the guys who own Dungeons and Dragons at the time had a Marvel Superheroes game Mhm And that game which
4:26
is called nowadays it's usually called the FAS RIP or phase RIP system was kind
4:31
of perfect It it did absolutely what I would want to do for a World of Warcraft game There's a current Marvel game there
4:38
have been several The current Marvel has their multiverse game which is a very good game Um the system is really
4:44
interesting I think it's it's the same basic system as it's been used in other games but with some modifications But I
4:52
think in general a superhero role playing game of any kind whether it be Champions whether it be uh Mutants and
4:58
Masterminds whether it even be Masks although Masks has is a PBTA game that uses playbooks Uh I but I think
5:05
playbooks work really well for World of Warcraft because you just have the you'd have the warrior you know the the shaman
5:14
Yeah you could just do that You could just literally play book them all out Um there's a lot of of stuff I I consider I
5:22
think the worst system for it would be Dungeons and Dragons Yeah ironically I
5:28
was thinking the same thing Like just to kind of jump in a little bit my like Dn D is a and this is not to talk ill of D
5:34
and D D and D is a very good a good game with you know a rich history of lore But the problem is and and we've talked
5:41
about this a lot Dn D is mechanically when it comes to combat very complicated
5:48
and makes combat take a long time And if you wanted every fight to feel like a
5:54
raid encounter that's kind of where you would go and yeah and and yeah there's absolutely that's you you've got you've
6:01
got a really good point there And I think one of the interesting things is it boils down to what type of game that
6:06
you want to play Do you want to play a more story narrative driven uh like
6:12
Warcraft RPG experience or do you want to play a very like video gamey style
6:18
game And both are there's no wrong answers Both are a correct answer right Uh me personally I would absolutely lean
6:25
to Powered by the Apocalypse And it's not just because I'm a huge shill for it It's because I do think that while it is
6:32
rules light it does something that a lot of other systems doesn't do where it
6:38
allows the players to have agency and control over the world and the story that's being told You for those of you
6:46
that are not familiar with it your playbooks generally are are you have a few moves and those moves allow you to
6:52
do different things There's generic things that you can do like mix it up or like make a brain type move or something
6:58
like that but most of the time like your your particular class has like a few
7:04
tricks that it can do very specifically to what you are Whether it's like I'm a warrior I'm this is a bunch of uh you
7:10
know little tiny henchmen standing around me Uh this group of cobalts well I'm just going to use this whirlwind
7:16
move that I have And then you describe how that looks when you make the roll uh
7:22
the person running the game doesn't actually roll any dice Everything is reactive off of how well you do And
7:30
because of that I think it leans more into the narrative style You describe
7:35
what your spells look like You describe what happens You describe you know what
7:40
your successes look like And then when you fail the storyteller or the gamekeeper gets to explain how it fails
7:48
and what the consequences are and what the complications are And yeah some of the best stuff that's ever happened to
7:53
me in a in a in a Power by the Apocalypse games are on fails Yeah As a matter of fact it's a system that
7:58
rewards you failing That's how you earn experience points Yeah But also just in terms of like what's described I
8:04
remember I you know you didn't I rolled a failure on an attack where I was using gravity powers to like throw a car at
8:11
somebody I still threw the car That's not the question The question isn't did you successfully use your superpowers
8:18
The question was where where' the car go And the answer was it didn't go where I
8:23
wanted it you know and that's that's the kind of thing I think Joe's got a really good point here I just wanted to like
8:29
you know say yeah that's a good idea But you know what else you just made me think of though What's that Um I was
8:34
thinking you know what If you wanted a D and D game but you wanted to do it and
8:40
have it work well with World of Warcraft you know what What game would work really well Dungeons and Dragons fourth
8:46
edition Yeah And I that you you're you and I are on the same wavelength for
8:52
those of you at home and I want to just fourth edition of D and D is actually much maligned for among a lot of people
8:59
for various reasons but chief among them is it doesn't feel like D and D In this particular case it's a good thing And
9:05
the reason was is fourth edition was designed at the height of MMOs when MMOs
9:11
were everywhere and the people who were making tabletop games were afraid that they were losing ground in people to
9:19
video games And to an effect they were to a certain point So like I know a bunch of people that once they figured
9:25
out you could RP in World of Warcraft stopped playing tabletop for a while not
9:30
forever but for a while So they developed fourth edition to be more video game like to give you more video
9:38
gameesque abilities where like you had cooldowns as opposed to like just pure
9:44
resources right So you didn't have spell points per se You did but like this
9:50
spell you could use once a day or this ability you could use once per short rest or this one you could use whenever
9:57
you wanted to because it was a basic ability and it really does gamify itself
10:02
well And I'll I'll let Matt talk about his points for it but I think there's a very strong case for it being a good
10:09
candidate for playing a a a D and D game that is World of Warcraft Yeah Um one of
10:14
the things I think it does I I I have a hilarious story that's nothing related to this but I keep thinking about it
10:21
Just that I if you know who James Jacobs is go look him up if you don't but he's he's a big deal at Piso He was for a
10:27
long time a big deal in Dragon magazine uh and Dungeon magazine when they when they were still published as paper
10:33
things James ran a D and D and D and D and D and D and D and D and D and D and D game that I was in and one day I was playing World of Warcraft and and he
10:39
just said hi and I like realized James is playing WoW A lot of the for all the
10:45
the cynical they were trying to counterprogram his video games Some of it was just simply that they liked video
10:51
games Yeah And they wanted to bring that in One of the things that I think uh fourth edition does really well is it
10:57
brings in MMO roles that you don't see on most tabletop It brings in actual working
11:04
tanking Like you there's stuff you can do in this game that makes tanking work
11:09
when it's not computer controlled And that's something that it's very hard to do in pen and paper because it's very
11:17
hard to justify why your boss why the evil villain wouldn't do the most effective thing Why would he stay and
11:23
keep hitting the guy who's the hardest to hit when he can kill the healer But with this system there's there's ways to
11:30
do it And they have they have the the con the triad in most games of tank heal
11:35
DPS They then added a controller function And the controller is is pretty
11:41
self-explanatory It's basically a DPS who does battlefield control And that's all stuff you can execute in this game
11:48
which means you can really if you want to make fights that feel like DN like WoW fights you could absolutely do it
11:55
with fourth edition But I think I also have to say I think Powered by the Apocalypse is a really inspired choice
12:00
as well because not just because of the playbooks and stuff which which is one
12:06
thing but also because of the way the narrative stuff you're you're game masters don't feel adversarial in most
12:13
powered by the apocalypse Yeah There's a feeling of adversarialness that's real easy to
12:19
happen in Dn D because it feels like the the the monsters are trying to kill you but it doesn't feel like the monsters
12:24
are trying to kill you Sometimes it feels like the the dungeon master is trying to kill you And and that's
12:30
something that I personally try very hard to fight against when I run games And when I play games I try not to
12:36
assume that of my DM I never assume that my DM or GM or whatever word you want to use is trying to kill me because they
12:42
could kill me anytime they want Like you know they could just say "Oh yeah and you die." They they that's that's just
12:49
not that's not the point of the game Depending on what you're trying to do what what kind of Warcraft you're trying to run Uh fourth edition D and D has a
12:56
lot of tools for a lot of those options but it's still a D&D game at the end of
13:02
the day for I understand why people didn't like it at the time I didn't like it at the time It's after it it was no
13:08
longer the main D and D that I really started realizing oh this is actually really good And how much how much moved
13:14
forward into D and D from there Yeah absolutely Um it's just that it didn't
13:19
to the people playing at the time it didn't feel like Dungeons and Dragons And that's a very subjective thing but
13:25
it's when enough people say that that there's currently a very popular RPG out there that became popular because they
13:32
wanted to keep playing the D and D they were already playing Mhm That's that's it's not an unfair
13:38
statement And but I think in the case of this the question you're asking it would work really well Um if that's something
13:45
you're willing to do PBTA has the advantage of not feeling like you're fighting the the dungeon master You feel
13:50
like you're collaborating with them Yeah And I think whether and I think that I think that actually carries through the spirit of Warcraft too which I think is
13:58
something that a lot of people they they mention it in interviews when they talk about design encounters and when they
14:04
talk about designing the narrative and I don't think it gets nearly enough attention The game developers are not
14:12
trying to just make impossible tasks for you They want to make something that
14:18
feels rewarding to overcome And yeah they're they're crafting a world with
14:24
care and intention for you to enjoy And whether that is your side quests your
14:30
daily quests your interactions with NPCs these in-game cinematics the raid
14:36
encounters the dungeon encounters or the various other things you can do And it's
14:41
very much in the spirit of not adversarial but a almost collaborative
14:46
thing Yeah There's a there's a a Blizzard watch in particular not Blizz Watch in particular Blisscon in
14:52
particular where um one of the the the designers said "It's not my job to
14:57
design encounters that will kill you It's my job to design encounters where they they will lose to you very
15:02
convincingly." Yeah Yeah And and think about that too right Like think about the the treadmill of the game itself
15:09
There's a lot of it that is very easy to gamify And one of the things that I think is really cool is with the ra
15:16
relative cornucopia of content we have right now All of these things fit really well into a tabletop experience And I'm
15:24
just going to throw a couple examples out there regardless of the system you use But you have delves which are and
15:30
dungeons which are really great for small groups of people and telling a concise story in a small amount of time
15:36
These are things that we would consider equivalent to something like a oneshot in Dn D or a tabletop game Uh then you
15:43
have your raid experiences and these tend to be longer like dives through not
15:49
just combat encounters but sometimes puzzles and other things like that That has literally been the bread and butter
15:55
of tabletop role playing games since the 70s if not The Temple of Elemental Evil is the first raid ever Yeah it really is
16:02
And if you go back to some of the original WoW design documents and I remember this in I want to say it was the Blizzcon I attended in 2008
16:10
um they talked about the influence of things like the Temple of Elemental Evil
16:16
in things like Burning Crusade And you can absolutely see that when you're going through like Hellfire Citadel and
16:22
other areas And when you start looking at these these things through that lens you can start to see how all these
16:29
pieces move in Earning reputation with various factions is very easy to gify in
16:35
a tabletop role playing experience You you have a home base or a home city that your group works out of And the more
16:42
tasks you do for whether it's a noble or whether it's the people of the town or whatever the case is the more trust you
16:47
earn That's like leveling up your reputation for them the easier things are for you to get the cheaper they are
16:53
for you to to acquire whatever the case is you're breeding that goodwill that all that is is reputation grinding And I
16:59
think that's absolutely fascinating And then again that storytelling experience over the years and it's very easy for
17:06
people to say well we don't write the story in WoW The thing is we kind of do
17:11
our interactions our reactions to NPCs shape some of what the story is
17:18
that we get things we enjoy or things that the community are very vocal about or at least are known to be passionate
17:25
about get big story moments get big pieces written for them Bellamth the
17:30
entire thing where elves get their new home is because players were chomping at
17:36
the bit for the completion of that story They wanted these NPCs to find a home
17:42
They wanted these NPCs to have something of their own from after being cast about
17:47
And not just the night elves all of the elves And we got that We got that because they were trying to create an
17:53
experience and tell a story that we wanted to see And I think that's a really important thing to note Now to
18:00
move into the other questions because there there's a a bunch here The question of how you would like that
18:05
adventure to be and what era you would want it set in There are so many choices
18:10
here So I'll let Matt go first but what would you like the adventure to be based
18:16
off of And what era would you like it to be set in See here's where I I make a couple of confessions One is I've done
18:22
this four times I've I've run anything from like a multiple session uh game to to a
18:30
straight up one shot in various parts of Azeroth Mhm Um I also sometimes I just
18:37
steal little things from very not just not just WoW not just Azeroth but from
18:42
various games I'm playing I will steal bits and pieces I don't What is one of the things I once said is that as long
18:49
as you are not publishing this thing to make money Uh every every game is going
18:54
to have stuff that you've experienced I remember the first the first I think straight up a D and D game I ran uh like
19:02
like I think 25% of it was Willow If you don't remember the movie Willow uh I
19:08
recommend it Val Kilmer in one of his best roles Uh rest in peace sir Uh
19:13
just it was a lot of fun to do that with it Uh for for the stuff I've stolen I
19:20
don't know if if Joe recognized it at the time If anyone was going to it would have been him But the first game I ran
19:26
for Blizzard Watch I put it set the initial adventure was basically set um
19:33
Black Rock Mountain Mhm I put it on an island but it was 100% Oh yeah Yeah I I
19:39
figured you caught it I I I didn't think anybody else did Liz I mean Liz maybe uh
19:45
Ann if she was paying attention but Ann was role playing really hard so I was pretty sure I I got it past her but I
19:51
knew you were going to be a problem Um but you didn't say anything and that was great so I could I kept going I was just
19:57
rolling with it Yeah But I I straight up at one point near the end of that campaign I straight up the the the the
20:05
map of the dungeon they were in was just it was just uh Blackwing
20:11
Lair It was straight up Blackwing Lair Uh to the point where they did something
20:16
you couldn't do in the actual Blackwing Lair which is something I love about tabletop They skipped a big portion of
20:25
of the stuff that was in They skipped the suppression room because they went
20:30
up to that little roof area The way that that dungeons are often designed in in
20:36
in World of Warcraft um they often have fast routes back Mhm Like Blackwing
20:44
Layer doesn't have a fullyfledged fast route back but you can cut a lot of corners and get back faster than you
20:50
left But in WoW you can't climb up that way But in a tabletop game why not So
20:57
they skipped a ton of stuff I was going to throw at them It wouldn't have been exactly the same stuff I wasn't going to actually do the suppression room because
21:04
oh my lord Uh but they just completely skipped it They just didn't fight that monster And that's something that I
21:11
think is something that is great about the confluence between media that you
21:17
consume online video game type stuff and media you consume you know the tabletop
21:23
realm where it's a bunch of different people generating a narrative because they can generate a narrative that you
21:28
don't see coming And that was something I love doing In terms of the actual this
21:34
is set in Azeroth this is a straightup uh Warcraft based uh adventure Uh back
21:40
in I want to say 2016 it might have been even earlier than that The last harrah for a group I was in Um there there's a
21:48
store in Edmonton called Warp One The the last harrah for that game I was playing at that store was like a four or
21:55
fivepart um this is complicated but basically there's a period of time in Azeroth's
22:01
history where elves are born that the first elves who are basically dark
22:07
trolls who are exposed to the powers of the well of eternity And we didn't have
22:14
everything that we now know but we were at this is about I guess Legion's about the time this was Yeah Pretty sure this
22:20
is around time Legion came out So taking the the Temple of Aloon and all the
22:25
statues in it of elves being elves even though you know I I went with this idea
22:31
of like the first elves created and you're playing one of them Like so
22:37
everybody in my group was one of the very first elves created Um and their their whole deal was each session took
22:45
place like 300 years after three or four sometimes more after the previous one
22:50
And they went from a bunch of like refugees on the on the shore of the of the well of eternity to the foundation
22:57
of Ashara's empire and the birth of Ashara And so I ran through that Uh the players each played on the two of the
23:03
players ended up they didn't intend this but they ended up playing Ashara's parents Um and and I just I went with it
23:11
because their characters absolutely hated each other and but by the end like
23:16
since like at this point a couple thousand years had almost passed they were like together and they had like she
23:21
was pregnant and I was like and yes and you decide to name her Dawn of Beauty
23:28
and you know big towers going and she's up top and one of them goes "Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute What
23:35
does she look like?" Like oh your daughter Um I don't know like whitish blue hair blue blue blue dark skin
23:44
glorious golden eyes and they're like "Mother man we
23:49
just And that's the session." And I loved that game because it was so much they're doing It wasn't me I was just
23:57
hanging on Every game I've ever run the best stuff comes from the players I've never felt like anything was my my work
24:02
And this one was absolutely the case because they were pushing so hard to unify the elven people and to have their
24:08
dynastic relationship and it was like boom there you go man But you could do that with any era There's so much
24:16
history in Azeroth You could run an entire game about the mage wars I mean the the the mage troll wars Mhm And you
24:23
could just do it in Arathy And that would be you'd have elves and humans and trolls and this all these like
24:30
cataclysmic magical battles and the birth of like an actual civilization and
24:35
just all this crazy stuff But that's like one little piece that's only a couple thousand years ago So yeah I mean
24:41
I could sit here and list tons all day but I I feel like I've gone on for a bit and I should let you go for a bit and then we can like switch back to me if
24:46
there's more time Yeah No we have plenty of time for this One of the things that I've always wanted to do and and you're right like in my time running games I've
24:54
absolutely stolen from moments of World of Warcraft especially for people that didn't play and just to see how they
25:00
would react to certain things Uh like I have run a castle being sieged uh by
25:07
those that would be have been wronged because they didn't get their bills paid and uh by the noble families who thought
25:13
that oh we could just get away with this you know sounds like what happened in Stormwind because it was basically what happened in Stormwind uh that generated
25:20
the Defias Brotherhood and everything that came through there the riots and and quelling that and uh like I've done
25:28
story elements like that and pulled them in but of all the things that I haven't done I actually have one written out
25:35
that I would love to run at some point And I literally have the notebook I dug it out for this episode where I wanted
25:42
to go back to the time leading up to the war of the ancients And I mean before
25:48
the demons hit before they breached the portal before there was allout warfare And I want to talk about going to the
25:54
political and sort of like espionagebased storyline of the
26:01
resistance against Queen Azara and her sick offense where during this time and
26:07
we visited back here a few times we know that people who didn't agree with her were disappeared We know that she was
26:14
trying to have an iron control over her people that she sought power and adoration And I want to dive deep into
26:22
that And it hasn't always felt appropriate timing wise with the real world but I thought this idea of coming
26:29
together having the players be part of the resistance because people forget the resistance was pretty big right It
26:36
wasn't just elves Like yes you had the sisterhood of aloon the moon guard the rook's guard Uh you had the ancient
26:42
guardians that were presenting themselves Uh you had various time travelers uh that wound up going back in
26:48
time during the war of the ancients They could have been there a little bit earlier The dragon flights got involved
26:53
and they could have been there in their visage forms Uh there were earn present for this which I think is also very
27:00
interesting But also to furogue and centaurs Yeah High mountain torin come directly
27:07
out of the war of the ancients So yeah they were torren getting involved They were absolutely torn involved They didn't get their horns until afterwards
27:12
for Hol's uh you know blessing from scenarios But having these players you
27:18
have a wider range of of races that they could play as but they're the underground resistance They're trying to
27:24
figure out how to get people safely out Every skirmish is high stakes Every you
27:31
know they have all these moral dilemmas that they have to decide they defeat one of the mage guards or one of the uh
27:37
dissident rooks guard that is loyal to Azara and they have to make a decision Do they let that person live Do they
27:43
take them out Do they is it can they risk that information going back uh one
27:49
of their compatriots gets captured They have a clear shot Do they risk that
27:54
person being tortured for the information on the the resistance against Queen Ajara or do they take the
28:00
shot and take them out so that they can't be tortured like this whole spy
28:05
like underground thing really lends itself well to that era and it's something I always wanted to do because
28:12
while we always get bits and pieces leading up to the War of the Ancients
28:17
there's all that turmoil and all that time before it that we don't get to see or really participate in And I think it
28:24
would be really rich for a game and really rich in storytelling potential Yes you know where it ends but it's to
28:32
me it's it's like my favorite Star Wars movie is Rogue One And the reason it's
28:38
Rogue One is because it tells a complicated story that yes you know how
28:43
it ends but it doesn't matter because everything in between is more important
28:49
than the actual ending itself And I'd love to see what players did with that rich in between area that gray area that
28:56
isn't fully defined what choices they would make what deals they would strike uh what entities they would bargain with
29:03
and how they would deal with this constant pressure of the mage the mages
29:10
sweeping through and trying to find the resistance of Ajara's personal guard like on high alert I would absolutely
29:17
love to run that at some point and I think it would be really really interesting At least to me it would be
29:23
And hopefully I would find players that would find that potentially interesting as well I'm I'm just sitting here going "That's really cool." Then I'm like "I
29:30
probably should say something." Um but I mean that's just like that's the the wild thing about this kind of adaptation
29:38
Um you didn't ask about other games or other worlds but I'm going to bring this
29:44
over to Diablo for a second because I've wanted to run a Diablo campaign
29:50
literally all my life Like I never got to Um I still haven't gotten to do it
29:56
but I really want to do one The closest I got was I basically reskinned Diablo
30:02
with D&D creatures like um instead of it being
30:07
the prime evils it was it was Orcus Grazit and Demogorgan that had been cast
30:14
to to the the campaign world But I I stole a whole bunch of Diablo for that
30:19
And it was very it was a very Diablo like D and D game but it still wasn't Diablo I've always wanted to run one set
30:26
right at the time of Hunting the Primevalss Um uh I'd love to do one
30:32
going back to the Sin War Like imagine playing like the thing about the Sin War is if you're playing in the Sin War
30:38
you're playing a Nephilim and that means you basically could take like the rules to exalt it and just run Diablo with it
30:44
Um and so there's there's a ton of stuff like that that I I would love to do and haven't got a chance to for Azeroth I
30:50
think my biggest the ones I've actually run or played in I played in a game that was set um right after Warcraft 3 but
31:00
which ended up on a world where things had gone differently and instead of um
31:06
Nofarian getting corrupted it was actually Yera who got corrupted and a different world comes out of the you
31:13
know different experiences and so forth So it was Azeroth but it was a different timeline for lack of a better word or
31:18
timeway whatever word you want to use I didn't run that one I just played it Uh but that one was fun because I got to
31:24
play this was my character was literally a five levels of barbarian because we used D and D for this one This was a
31:30
straight up D and D one which is one of the reasons I feel like D and D is not a great choice for it Um but we're talking
31:35
like five levels of barbarian and like five levels of ranger for a 10th level character And it was
31:42
um it it was a reskinned Goliath Uh but in the game um it was like a a a a Vool
31:52
but but a a curse of fleshed one but not one that would go on all the way down to being human yet Just like the ones you
31:57
see when you when you first go to to Northrand right There's plenty of they're made out of meat Roolool running
32:04
around It was one of those So it was fun Um I got to play Ry Cool but again it
32:09
was a reskin Goliath It was it was one of those things where everything was just reskinned and that's fine Quite
32:14
frankly I feel like that is something to be considered if you're trying to run a game like this but you don't have time
32:21
to sit down and really think about like all the rules to it and all the ways you want to make it work Reskinning stuff is
32:28
fine You do not have to like go and reinvent the orc to make orcs that are
32:33
more like Azeroth orcs just just say they're like that Um at least with with Azeroth you've got
32:40
a lot of classic fantasy tropes to to to basically steal Um like elves you could
32:46
just Okay fine Night elves are essentially drought Um doesn't really work but you could reskin it close
32:52
enough So that's but you know lorewise there's such so so much storytelling you can steal from that I feel like if you
32:59
are not interested in doing the hard work of completely making everything
33:04
100% game compatible and don't feel like you have to do that you do not some
33:10
people like doing that but if you don't you do not have to make it so they can com exactly recreate their WoW character
33:17
in the tabletop game you're going to run it's fine if you just use the classes that are in the the players handbook you
33:23
know and just just get close enough you know Uh I don't know how how you feel about that one Joe No I I feel I feel
33:29
very much the same way And if you look the other thing that I think is interesting too is obviously our
33:36
community the WoW community and the D and D community There's a lot of crossover Um I should just call it the
33:42
tabletop community And you can find you can find various conversions of different things as well online many
33:50
many places This includes places like Drive-Through RPG where free modules are available Uh the DM's Guild uh there's a
33:57
lot of other places where people have taken the time to already do some conversions as well So one of the things
34:03
that I think people will ask about is how do you represent uh iconic abilities
34:08
and those can be spells or moves or things that are available to classes that already exist And Matt and I have
34:16
had conversations about this in the past Uh like warriors and fighters in D and D
34:22
Warriors from and fighters in D and D there's a lot of overlap already There's a lot of stuff like you talk about
34:29
monkey grip where or titans grip I'm sorry Uh in D and D it was it was monkey grip It was oh I'm going to use a
34:35
two-handed weapon one-handed style Like this is a thing I can do now Um like
34:40
those already existed Whirlwind is already a thing that existed I think it was actually a fourth edition uh like
34:47
ability that they could cast and use Yeah Um battle masters let you do things
34:52
like do trip attacks and gouging attacks and things that are very much stuff that you would find warriors in WoW doing And
34:59
like I think that's really fascinating In fourth edition there was also a shaman class already built in and it
35:06
operated very similar to a shaman in WoW as far as like Yeah it wasn't they it was pretty pretty obvious where they got
35:13
their inspiration Oh yeah Um but conversions for that for fifth edition
35:18
still exist today You can literally go and get that and use that You don't have to reinvent the wheel if you want to
35:23
have somebody play a shaman Like certain spells and abilities all
35:28
these things exist and a lot of them are completely free So you don't have to do a whole lot of the hard work and you can
35:34
focus more on the storytelling And again I know we talked about this a little bit and kind of dove aside and are weaving
35:40
back in but like there's so many interesting stories that you could potentially tell Stratholme before Arthus and before
35:48
the the the grains were delivered the infected grains were delivered and what that life looked like Because again
35:54
Strathol was off on its own It had its own culture its own life Uh yes it was part of a kingdom but like it had its
36:00
own adventurers It had people that would have to go out and do stuff It was not necessarily just a you know basic town
36:07
It was an ar fortified position It was exactly what you would expect like adventurers to base out of Uh you could
36:14
do stuff with the Arai Highlands and everything that existed beforehand Like we talk about that a lot where like
36:20
there's not there hasn't been a whole lot in Arai for a while and now we're starting to do more there but what about when Arai was like the height of its
36:27
empire and it was its own thing Yeah Um you could do I mean people forget this
36:32
but every human civilization that we've got in War in Warcraft from Warcraft one
36:38
on all originated from the Arai Highlands Mhm That's where the first
36:43
human empire was built That's where the the group that spread out and covered half the continent came from that one
36:49
place Yeah And then uh there's other things too like what was happening in Northrun before the Lich King got there
36:56
right like when Arthus got there and and became the Lich King there was a whole period of time before that happened
37:02
where life was still existing there you know Yeah I mean there was obviously human settlements of some kind both in
37:08
the Grizzly Hills and in the Holland Fjord Uh there was um trying to remember
37:13
the other places Holling Fjord and Boran Tundra They they they both had settlements Grizzly Hills obviously had
37:19
settlements There were obviously places where no humans were living Uh but there were other people living there The
37:24
Nurubians had their own little empire What's up with that you know I mean there's there's a ton there's there's
37:30
literally a ton of stuff you could do with that Just just that one place Yeah I mean and even going further north like
37:35
you have uh all the Vikru and and all the other folks that were like they they lived there That that was them Like they
37:42
didn't just worship the Lich King that happened afterwards but what was their
37:47
life and their like you see glimmers of it but you have this time in between the Tuscar as well They they've been living
37:53
there for generations You have so many options that you could really do
38:01
anywhere go anywhere And then if you're doing a pure Azeroth thing let's say you
38:07
wanted to do more than one and you wanted to do more than one era you have the ability to do such things like I
38:13
don't know the caverns of time It which is a really great potential tabletop vehicle for uh you know oh well we're
38:21
going to go back to 10,000 years ago Uh here's where your adventurers go By the way that time table time traveler thing
38:28
I talked about earlier there you go There's a there's a way for it to happen or we want to experience the fall of
38:33
Caresh Uh you can go ahead and do that Uh like you have all of these various
38:38
options You can go anywhere do anything And there are so many places in WoW's
38:43
story that haven't been fully discovered or told yet that you just have so much
38:50
freedom to pick whatever you want And I think it's really really cool And I think it's why folks like me and Matt
38:57
and other people I know that play World of Warcraft or have played World of Warcraft and play tabletop games have
39:03
borrowed from some of those elements as often as we have because there's we like playing the whatif game What if this
39:10
happened or what if this you know was explored or wonder what happened there And I think that's really really
39:16
important one that I I really wanted to run um like for a long long time was a a
39:24
gnome based one Yeah I I ended up using it as an article for the site because I
39:30
didn't I didn't have a group who were willing to play it before the No it was it was cult of the mechanical and what
39:36
it was based around was Mecca Mecca Mecca Gear Master Zod Gear Master Mecha Zod sorry who when you you go to Norand
39:44
they dig him up and he's this crazy robo gnome who turns all the other gnomes
39:51
back into rooon gnomes He undoes the curse of flesh on them and there's a whole bit where you have to stop him And
39:58
I'm like what if that guy got back up to to where you know he went to Aldoir and
40:05
and got Mimmerron to listen to him and Mimon was like "Yeah we should turn them all back into my servants." Oh and they
40:12
reconnected with MechaGon who was already trying to do that exact same thing Oh yeah And you could do this
40:18
whole D&D campaign about the gnomes are suddenly this massive threat and everyone in Azeroth is like "What's
40:24
going to happen?" And they're using that they want to uncurse everybody and some people don't have an uncursed state to
40:32
go to you know like there's there's nothing What happens if you try to undo the curse of flesh on an on an orc The
40:40
orc doesn't have a curse of flesh as such The orc degenerated down to being
40:46
an orc They are the gnomes of Dranor Yeah the joke we used to tell which is actually really accurate But they're not
40:52
like nothing made them that way right So what happens Can you make a robo robo
40:58
orc or does it just turn into a giant mountain Like cuz the primordial
41:03
ancestor of all orcs was a walking mountain So now that's back you know or and would
41:11
like would it work on just one orc or do all orcs get turned into this one giant
41:17
walking orc mountain Or like maybe it doesn't physically grab them but what if
41:22
there's like it unleashes this mental plague where orcs everywhere are just falling into like comeomaos states and
41:29
as they're doing so um the ground underneath Durotar is like trembling and
41:36
they're like we got to stop this sleeping plague before it destroys everybody And it turns out it's just this mountain being being born out of
41:44
all the orcs subconscious because the orcs are it's trying to decurse people who weren't cursed You know they were
41:51
made by a Titan and they were made by a Titan as a giant walking talking mountain So it starts like you know do
41:58
does that happen Like what happens like and there's there's a lot of it I just there's so much you could do just with
42:05
that And that's just one thing Like imagine if you wanted to do like Warlords of Dranor You we we went back
42:12
to we went back about 30 years When we go to when we went to Dranor we actually went back in time That's something I
42:19
think a lot of people forget When you're standing on Dranor during Warlords of Dranor you're about 30 to 35 years ago
42:25
We can go further in Yeah What We can go further back We could we could go further back But also we could one thing
42:32
people talked about constantly but never anyone dealt with is what's going on in Azeroth when the orcs aren't showing up
42:39
Yeah And also with the like and we talked about this a little bit too before on I think both podcasts You have
42:45
a period of time from the time we leave the warlords of Drraanor Drraanor to the
42:50
time we go back to get the uh Maggar works and you could do everything that happened in between there the the army
42:57
of light taking over Dranor and what that looked like and how Drraanor was still dying the whole time Yeah Like you
43:04
know it was it was too late to stop what had been done to it and just Yeah There
43:09
is a lot you know imagine a completely like a side story being run at the exact
43:15
same time as the Magar story line There's another story line where people are evacuating the people who were once
43:22
part of the army of the light but who are like this has gone crazy Like people are the the planet's falling apart and
43:29
they're fighting Like this was one a pitch I actually tried to run Have if you've seen Man of Steel there's lots of
43:36
reasons to like and dislike this movie but the opening of the movie just taken as an action setpiece where Jorel is
43:42
trying to steal the codeex and get out of get his kid out of Krypton before it
43:48
blows up Imagine a bunch of adventurers port back into the moment while Urel is
43:54
going off to try and fight with the Magar and just trying to get as many kids and innocent people out as possible
44:01
And you have this whole you know you got to run and gun against the fanatics to try and get just regular Dreni who just
44:07
want to live the normal life and get them the heck to a to So like literally you you could be playing the command the
44:13
common dump that you played in Danor getting them out through your portal cuz
44:19
you have a portal back to Azeroth You could get them out So that's that could
44:24
be a whole campaign You get there you form an underground resistance you make
44:29
nice with Urell because you remember her but you you you're realizing this is nuts And when she goes off on her big
44:35
campaign instead of you attacking her or do anything like that because you know you know what's going to happen you get
44:41
as many people out as you can through your portal and and you have to fight the fanatics off while they're
44:48
evacuating and evacuating You're like and to you it's like you know when you get back to to Azeroth or whatever it's
44:54
like I only saved a couple hundred people Like you know so many people died And they'd be like yeah but you did save
45:00
these couple hundred people And and that could be like imagine that D and D campaign You could totally run that You
45:06
know you could with any system you want It doesn't have to be D and D Unfortunately for uh the some of us I
45:11
the word D and D has almost become synonymous with a role playing game in my head Yeah It's it's become Yeah Yeah
45:18
It's hard Um but I do believe you know there just so many stories you could do
45:23
Imagine one of the ones I really loved and this wasn't my idea A friend of mine told me on this one and sold was trying
45:28
to sell me on it Uh RP Dooall Um he wanted us to run as the Titans Like he
45:35
wanted to do one shot where we played the Titans I can see that And yeah I don't know what he wanted to do with it
45:40
cuz he didn't tell me He was like he wanted me to play in it Uh we got as far as me being
45:46
Sargeras He was like "You have to play Sargeras for me." And I'm like "Um okay feels kind of like kind of like you know
45:54
playing playing as I don't know like who who's like who would be that you like
46:01
it's like playing as Anakin I guess like you know it's kind of weird man but yeah
46:07
it was absolutely something he wanted to do and and it would have been really cool I think it would have been very high concept though
46:13
like and and that's the thing Warcraft I don't know how to put this politely Warcraft is like a big pig
46:20
It'll eat anything And and you can go you can go play play WoW for a weekend
46:26
and you can go from stuff where you you could you can hear Jack Kirby's voice in the background going not bad I like the
46:31
I like the arch to like this place this story over here is is straight up um
46:37
it's it's like a horror book Like like every so often Mechon really gets to me It it's actually horrifying if you let
46:44
yourself think about Mechagon and it's just there So yeah there's a lot I'm gonna I'm getting overly excited so I
46:52
want to stop and let you talk a bit Well I think I think we have enough time to move into sort of the last section of the question here Uh and that last
46:58
section of the question is if we were playing in the game not running the game but playing in the game what race and
47:06
class would your characters be And I think people are going to expect us to go with the obvious answers Uh and those
47:12
are definitely on the the plate Uh but I'm curious if there's anything else that really speaks to you Matt I want to
47:19
play a warlock because I want to actually one of the things WoW doesn't
47:25
let you really do as much as I would like it to let you do is really grapple with what you are doing as a warlock
47:32
Like cuz warlocks don't have to be yay yay demons They can be you get on the
47:39
ground lick my feet and do what I say to demons You know you don't have to be
47:45
friendly with them You don't even have to like you can be I'm taking your power
47:51
to serve my own end And I I feel no more for you than I would for an internal
47:57
combustion engine if I had one You know I don't I don't worship gasoline I put in my car I'm certainly not going to
48:04
worship you And and that's like something I feel like I I've heard people talk about it like in their own
48:10
justifications but it's not part of the warlock class the way I feel like it should be Like I really feel like warlocks could be like you could have a
48:18
like a good warlock You could have a warlock who's who like wants to save his people and is is no way shape or form
48:25
evil has no ulterior motives just wants to do the best he can and is enslaving
48:31
demons because they're effing demons You know they they came here they blew up
48:36
like multiple cities they rained from the sky as meteorites on green fire Yeah
48:42
that we we can't get rid of them so we might as well use them And that's just one thing I'd love to do There's there's
48:48
tons of stuff I would love to do I'd love to play as a troll a a a an
48:53
Azerothian troll is one of the more fascinating concepts versions of trolls I've ever seen cuz they're not like
49:00
they're not just the mindless monsters you get in a lot of different versions They're they're people with their own
49:06
culture and their own identity and they're really unique way of looking at spirit worlds and spirits where
49:12
literally is it can I talk to it Is it something I can I can have some kind of
49:17
relationship with Then it's a lowa I don't care if if what what category you
49:23
put it in is immaterial to me It's a lowa You know I I'm one of the guys I I
49:29
I like a lot of troll stuff in WoW troll lore but I really feel like we missed
49:34
something when gunkk didn't get used a heck of a lot more Mhm Mhm Nothing wrong with uh banani nothing wrong with Mala
49:43
but man I wanted more GK Can you imagine like when we finally get whatever the
49:48
new Loa of Kings is going to be When when I I can't remember his name but oh my god thank you Vulg when we find out
49:55
what kind of Loa of Kings Vulgun is going to be I want Gunkk to be like his sono You know what I mean Like his his
50:02
guy who's there always going "Have you considered biting it and then disembowing it with your claws?"
50:09
No Oh that's my that's usually my first idea Gonk please like "All right all
50:15
right all right all right you could try talking to them." But again I don't want you to forget the concept of disembowing
50:21
them That could work They don't even have bowels They're they're robots Then all the
50:27
better I just I would love to role play I would love to play somebody who was
50:33
like the troll a dwarfed druid I mean not dwarf sorry A troll druid man Dwarf
50:39
and trolls hanging out together is also a cool idea a troll druid in Azeroth That that's like right up there for me
50:45
just in terms of the different kinds of troll druids we now have because we now have Xandelari troll druids who are
50:52
basically just dynamers and then we've got like you know uh the the various
50:57
other kinds of of trolls Um Dark Spear in particular Dark Spear druids are freaking hilarious to me because they
51:04
basically just showed up and told you know hey we're here now What Who are you Oh yeah we're we're new druids for
51:11
trolls Yeah Gongk Gong sent us What What's happening He turned into
51:18
a bear What do you want me to do Uh if he can turn into a bear I guess I guess he's in Why does he have tusks Cuz he's
51:25
he's a troll Of course he has tusks You I don't I don't ask you why you have big old ears He has big old ears Like that's
51:32
true He does have big old ears But yeah so I I feel like those are kind of things I want to I want to stretch in
51:40
ways that you can't really do in the game just because the game is what it is It's a it's a game for like millions of
51:45
people to play I want to pick out characters who are just really wildly desperate and and run down Yeah how what
51:52
that would mean And I'm in the same same boat right Like so everybody's going to be expecting me to say some flavor of
51:58
shaman And don't get me wrong I would absolutely play a shaman again I played shaman almost exclusively in the fourth
52:04
edition of of D and D for a reason But the thing that I've been thinking a lot
52:09
about uh is the one race and class combination we have yet to get in game
52:16
Night elf paladin I am a thousand% convinced that they existed at one point
52:23
in time that the priestesses and and warriors of Aloon in the order had the
52:30
equivalent of what were paladins but that has been lost to time And so one of
52:36
the things that I would absolutely love to do is explore what that would look
52:42
like what the order of the moon or order of the moon or whatever we wanted to call it looked like would act like what
52:49
what it what its paladin tradition was And I think that that would be wickedly
52:56
fun Um and it's partially it's because I've been playing Paladin a lot lately
53:03
but also just really thinking about that like you could have such a really deep
53:09
and interesting exploration of what that order would be like what that would look
53:15
like what that would feel like And I think it would be really really cool in the same way that you're talking about
53:21
like looking at things that we don't have a ton of representation on or a ton of of information on in game and giving
53:28
you sort of that that I don't want to call it wiggle room Uh but allowing you to sort of fill in the blanks create
53:35
that space right Yeah You can explore stuff that's otherwise not available Yeah And and that's where I would go
53:42
because I think it would be absolutely fascinating and fun to play Also I think
53:48
that in tabletop games paladins are often um I don't want to say like
53:54
misunderstood but they're often overlooked as very simplistic characters And I think that they can be uh
54:02
very trying to think of how to phrase this They can be very complex individuals And I think absolutely I
54:10
think you're right And and it's not just I must smite evil or I can't do this
54:15
thing because I'm a paladin No they're they're knights with a purpose And you
54:21
know what I did once honestly and this is not not necessarily related to to WoW but related to paladins I played a
54:28
character who dressed up all in black and snuck around on rooftops I had like
54:34
two levels of rogue to to let me do a whole bunch of different stuff but he was absolutely a paladin Uh and he was B
54:41
He was straight up Batman Batman is a paladin guys Yeah If any DC character is
54:46
a paladin it's Batman I know you're looking at Big Blue Big Blue is not a paladin No Batman has a very strict code
54:53
of conduct Has a very Yeah Yeah Big Blue would absolutely do He He's just as
54:59
likely to be neutral or chaotic good as he is to be just lawful good or to have a strict court He has one rule that he
55:06
doesn't break But then like he'll go and he'll go and sink a Navy's entire ships
55:12
if it'll stop a war or whatever That that guy will play fast and lose He just will never hurt people Batman will
55:18
absolutely hurt people but he will never deviate from his code It doesn't matter
55:23
what happens You could do anything to break that guy You could have the new gods like dark side can send two guys to
55:31
literally put him in a machine and torture him with his own life history until he breaks and he'll never break
55:38
because he is Batman and that's a paladin that right there that unwavering
55:44
commitment Um another you want to know another paladin Darth Vader Yeah Darth
55:50
Vader is an anti- paladin but he was originally a paladin He is in modern in modern versions he would be the
55:56
oathbreaker but it's still a paladin It's it's still that same thing that I I
56:02
broke because of a specific reason and now I apply all that zeal that I used to
56:07
apply to this completely different direction but it's the same zeal Um so
56:13
yeah I love paladins in Dn D And and quite frankly they're one of my favorite classes in it And I feel like WoW has so
56:20
much potential for his paladins not just the night off ones which I by the way I think it's great cuz I already imagine
56:26
myself I can imagine you go through and you find out one of the reasons there aren't many night elf paladins anymore
56:31
is because they were so likely to get themselves killed trying to save everybody Exactly Right like they would
56:37
be the ones that were first in line like standing up to the tyranny of like what was going on that or or even the first
56:43
in line to like protect people from the invasion of the demons that there's that their order gets decimated And I kind of
56:50
like that I don't want to say that that that fatalistic or hopeless nature of it
56:55
but I like But they're always willing to Yeah They're absolutely always willing to stand up and go "Okay get everyone to
57:01
the get everyone to the boat I'm going to hold them here." There's literally 5,000 of them Yeah So they you know I
57:06
I'll wait for them to get a few more just so it's fair Mhm Go you know that kind of thing where they just they're
57:13
just paladins That's what they do It It's a part of their nature even So yeah
57:19
that it is something I'd love to see but I'd love to see for other races too Like I'd love to see more paladins You don't
57:26
even have to add more to the game But what do we know about Torren Paladins Almost nothing We got one Um what are
57:34
what are the blood elf paladins doing We we had a good example Leaddin got a little bit of an arc but man I'd love to
57:40
see more dwarf paladins There's dwarf paladins and there have been dwarf paladins for years And how often do they
57:47
get to be anything but a joke No man I I think Paladins really that would be
57:52
something cool to to to do in in in a a WoW themed game is play a paladin and
57:58
play up like all the different ways you can be a paladin you know because it's
58:03
not just about I'm rigidly adherent to this No it's about you I said I'm going
58:09
to do something so I'm gonna do it Like you know who I I remember reading a really cool article about this I know we
58:15
we have we're running out of time here Uh but you know who's a paladin Uh Clint
58:21
Eastwood's various western characters Mhm Especially in Unforgiven Killing you
58:27
know killing is a hell of a thing You're taking not You're not just taking away a man's life You're taking away everything
58:33
he ever was and everything he could ever be That's a paladin Imagine walking into town going "I don't want to kill you but
58:39
by God I will." You know who are also paladins which I think is absolutely fascinating And we're going to break
58:45
down to that And this is and I know what somebody's going to say to this but bear with me The Ninja Turtles as written No
58:51
absolutely No the original the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Like you
58:56
could argue that they're so high but they have Paladin Yeah absolutely I totally agree with you on that because
59:03
of you know the way they are Yeah The comm the commitment to the code right Like it's it's they will not cross that
59:11
boundary They will not like they they understand the weight of their power like it it is and this is not just to
59:18
say that like paladins are are cool I like paladins Uh but this is to say you
59:24
know it's an unexplored space that I think even in WoW while we have studied
59:31
uh the Paladin orders and they've gotten a bunch of time uh like as far as like screen time goes
59:38
I don't think it's been enough I don't think well let's look at this way too
59:43
You you talk about like you know we've they've gotten a lot of screen time but how often do you whether you're playing
59:49
a pallet or not get to feel what it means to be one Yeah You know it's not
59:55
just about going forth and calling on the light to smite things There's a a determination you have to make It's one
1:00:02
of the things about the original the the origins of paladins in in our legends and myths come from a group of French
1:00:09
knights who served Charlemagne And they were effectively like the nice at the round table but for Charlemagne And the
1:00:16
whole premise of it is that they stood up at a point where they knew this was
1:00:22
likely going to be it There is that element of them where when somebody has to be willing to make the the choice
1:00:30
they make it whether or not it's what they want Um in a really weird way I
1:00:36
feel like they missed a huge beat not having Ter make a paladin order Yeah when she became the night warrior
1:00:43
because that was her doing that Yeah And that's we've we've talked about that before and it's something that I I know
1:00:48
a lot of players feel very passionate about and maybe we'll get it in the future but until then that's what I would choose to play given the
1:00:55
opportunity in a an Azeroth based tabletop game Like you give me that that ability you let me have that be you know
1:01:03
the the option or one of the options that I can choose I'm all there for it So uh but I think that's going to do it
1:01:10
for us right now Uh I do want because if we don't guys we learn we're going to be here all day Uh but I do want to thank
