Tavern Watch Plays Legend in the Mist, Episode 1: Never fight the undead after lunch

This week we're diving into a rustic fantasy of small town heroes (or heroes to be) in Legend in the Mist, where our humble villagers come together to deal with a single shambling undead that found its way to town. Where did it come from? Are there more of them? And is the right solution for the entire town to panic?
That last one really depends on who you ask, but join GM Phil Ulrich along with a group of wannabe heroes venturing out into the world, with:
-Chris as Dunny, the local blacksmith, whose father's old sword may be more than it seems.
- Nick as Frye, a hardworking cook at the local tavern, who dreams of becoming a great chef (but mostly finds himself working for ruthless overseers in the kitchen).
- Liz as Lyssa, who works at the ferry running people and cargo across the river, but thinks there has to be more to life than this.
Will they rise to the challenge, or fall to poisonous sludge and unlucky dice? You'll have to listen to find out!
This is the first of a three-game series of Legend in the Mist, which is designed for fantasy storytelling that scales from our small town heroes to folk heroes of legend. It's a different flavor of fantasy TTRPG, with a vibe that feels quite like The Hobbit, where ordinary folk may find themselves in extraordinary adventures. It has a narrative-centric focus and flexible character creation so you can make the hero you want and play them the way you want. We enjoyed it a lot, and you can pick up a book for yourself from Son of Oak.

Uh today we will be playing a game of Legend in the Mist which is uh described as a rustic fantasy tabletop role

playing game The best way to think about that is rather than you know uh seasoned adventurers out looking for treasure and

delving into dungeons our characters are a little more salt of the earth think like the Frotos and the Rans of the

characters today uh let's talk about who's playing with us today Uh we'll start going down the order with

Hello I am playing Lisa and I am I work at the ferry in town and uh you know the

ferry goes back and forth back and forth and uh she's a little over it but her family owns the place and all of her

brothers have run off to go find fortune and adventure in the world and she is stuck here going back and forth back and

forth back and forth And last but not least Nick

Uh my I'm Nick Marino I will be playing Fry Fry is the town's one of the town's

local cooks at the end And Fry moved to town at the as it at a young age So he

can say he's from here but all of his family members have either since moved on or passed So he's just gutting it out

trying to be a cook and uh improve his culinary skills There you I mean you're

at least as from here as anybody else All right So uh the village in particular that we're going to be taking

a look at today is the village of Ravenhome Uh so in in the world that

Legend in Legend in the Mist posits you've got uh you know you've got your big cities and your adventures out in the wonderlands but back back where most

people live in the in the remote villages in the Dales is kind of a a quieter more out of the way place And

for centuries the remote villages in the dales and the village of Ravenholm in particular have been isolated from the

world at large Uh life goes on without much peril except for the everyday dangers of work in the fields and

village affairs To the Dales people it seems like this quiet life has always been this way Perhaps somewhere out

there in the world beyond the wonderlands where uh Lisa's siblings have gone to there are great miraculous

things happening But here in the Dales miracles and adversity are small and mundane Every few years a traveler from

outside the dales passes through and they bring strange tales of the outside world with them but they leave quickly

and their fanciful stories are promptly forgotten Uh legends of the treacherous creatures of twilight and the great

thures of old are nothing more than a fireside tale for most of the Dale's people Vast majority of them spend their

entire life without ever thinking of such things letting let alone encountering them However there are a

few remaining practitioners of the old ways who still retain fragments of knowledge in the bygone days when the

Dales were more involved with the outside world Uh but as the centuries passed the number of the old ways

practitioners has dwindled Their faith is faltered and their memory faded Today they are too few and they know too

little to uphold their ancient duty This is not a coincidence The world is changing and far outside the dales the

old powers are once more awakening after an age-ong slumber But uh our our heroes

uh such as they are they don't know about any of that right now They're living just another day in Raven Holm Uh

in fact it's kind of an ordinary overcast day It's uh let's say it's

about about 10:00 in the morning about that time of day Uh let's say let's zoom

in first on Lissa What are you doing today where where are you at what are you doing who are you with

um usually on any given day she's working at the ferry and I mean I imagine sometimes there are travelers or

traders who are coming through and sometimes it's quiet and she's just uh doing maintenance on the boat or things

like that I mean there's a lot of downtime So yeah sometimes it's hurry up

and wait and sitting and if if there's no one there she's probably scribbling in her notebook about maybe a a crazy

story a merchant was talking about when they came through across the ferry last time

Okay Uh cool So kind of a I was going to say are you writing is she writing

fanfic about what the outside world is like or is she strictly like notetaking like here's what this weird bar said

when he came through yeah definitely notetaking She's trying to record totally definitely factual

things about the world outside So things she might get in letters from her brothers rarely or things she hears from

travelers are things from stories that may or may not be true but it it's in a book It has to be true right yeah

Absolutely Especially if you wrote it down Okay Yeah Cool Uh okay Let's uh

let's zoom out of you uh taking your uh taking a little break from the ferry Uh

and let's see what uh Dunny Dunny what are you up to well um being as the town's

blacksmith at this point um as the his his father has um retired for the time

being Um he is in the forge uh clanging

away uh making some new um making some new knives for the uh chefs at the

inn Okay Always good Uh yeah Uh and last

but not least uh our hardworking cook Fry What are we're getting close to the

lunch hour What are you uh I assume you're you're working at the end today

Yes So Fry right now is helping the head chef prepare for the impending lunch

rush Uh and in on this day in particular

the chef whose name is CHZ is in a particularly sour mood He's not the

greatest individual uh to work with or work under but he's

the only individual in town to work with and work under So

uh he's going through his routine of yelling at me and any other hless cook

in the kitchen for how we're currently measuring ingredients We're working too slow Um

and Fry is half listening half paying attention to what uh Chezz has to say as

he goes through his station because he knows if he fully tunes in to what CHZ has to say then it's going to be bad for

everybody and Fry frankly does not want to ruin this other chance at learning

more culinary Okay Well uh you're you've set me up here We're going to we're going to go ahead and just demonstrate

real quick for everybody how uh rolling for things works in Legend of the Mist

We are going to uh see how well Fry does at making this lunch uh while not you

know listening to chess entirely or uh getting you know failing under

pressure So uh characters in Legend of the Mist are they don't have any

numerical stats They are made up of a list of what's called tags which can be things like I'm just going to look at uh

Lisa's uh character sheet here Uh Lisa has for example the tag work smarter not

harder because she's always looking for ways to make running the ferry easier or gloves for a better grip which is just a

thing that she has on her Uh so in this case uh Nick I want you to look at Fry's

character sheet and find any of your power tags and weakness tags uh that

seem relevant to uh uh working under pressure and making getting ready for

the lunch rush at the end Okay So I've

your backpack It's not everything you carry It's just something important to your character that you think might come up Uh bag of salt and spices That sounds

obviously we we'll do this as a simple role We won't that the the plus two that you ended up with is what this game calls power And there are some roles

where it's more important where you actually spend your power to get effects Uh in this case we'll just call this a

simple role We'll say your two succeeds Um you're going to get a temporary status though Uh you are stressed

obviously Um and yeah that sounds about right Yeah that sounds about right Um not super much because you're used to

this Uh so it's just a tier one but you have the tier one status stressed but

you succeed despite the stress Uh you uh manage to tune out uh Chz's more

annoying insults and you make a uh honestly a pretty fancy lunch for this

village Like everything looks really good Um and so we'll uh we'll we'll jump

ahead a little bit in time So the um we'll say the three of

you now are actually enjoying the lunch that uh uh in the in the tavern in town

and um you're kind of you know lunch is over

you're kind of you know you you're kind of full you're relaxing a little bit maybe you're having a drink before you get back on the job Um

and but you hear in the distance uh from the the the inn is uh kind of on the

tavern's kind of on the edge of town um adjacent to some fields of barley Uh a

lot of tall unh harvested barley out that way And you're all finishing up

your lunch and in the distance out towards the barley fields you hear uh a

sh a high-pitched blood curdling scream Uh what do you do oh god

Uh Dunny Go die Go Uh Dunny immediately jumps up

from where he is and takes off running towards the noise Okay Um are you all going out with him or cuz Dunny is

booking it now I uh Yeah Lisa is going to run after Denny All right Yeah You

can't go off alone Who knows who knows what's in our barley fields

No Fry is going to join right behind like this is unusual and I want to see

what happens No that's good Um yeah so the three of you get outside and as you reach the edge of the barley field a um

one of the village children Willow she is about eight or nine years old Um comes like backpedaling out of the tall

barley and like falls on like stumbles and falls back on the ground And when she sees that there are adults nearby

she's just like she's speechless She can't you know she can't get anything out and she's
13:57
she's pointing like towards the barley like with a shaky finger Um something in

there has clearly spooked her Uh Denny goes over to uh the girl

and kneels down to help her back up and is like trying very calmly Now now I did

what I didn't bring up earlier Donny is a massive wall of meat He is a gigantic man but he is very softspoken So he's

just like "It's it's okay What did you see like you're safe now We'll get you we'll get we'll get you get you back

into into town You know just tell us what you saw." All right Let's have let's have another roll to try We're

going to have you roll to try and calm her down Give me um any I said any positive and negative tags you think

would be relevant to calming down a scared child

Oh let's see Um I you know two of his power tags are

she'll give you Um I think she might add if pressed that it smells bad whatever it is

Okay Um so so Dunny looks up uh at at at

the other two and he's just like I I'm going to I'm going to get her back to

the inn and then I will I will meet you both back here Okay that'll work So uh Dunny is

escorting Willow back to the inn Her dad is probably uh he's out there He didn't you know run out as fast as Dunny did

but he's definitely outside waiting for you So while Dunny is taking Willow back over to the end uh Lissa and Fry what

are you all doing are is there a trail leading into the wheat i have I have no relevant skills

for tracking but I read a book once so I feel like I have relevant skills I read

a book once I love it Um so the only tracks leading into the barley are uh

are um you know Willows back backwards where she stumbled out Um if you want to

try to just like observe things and see what's maybe see what's going on or if you want to try to Yeah If you want to

try to figure out whatever's in there where it might have come from any of those kind of details Um give me Yeah

Give me a roll with uh you know add your add your tags like everybody else and then give me a roll

Uh yeah I don't have any really good tags for this Um I have one for all in

uh two things happen One um you realize that um you don't see like you didn't

from the barley field you kind of spot them on the other side are a set of what look like bootprints They're really

weirdly spaced bootprints almost like whatever had them like um was like you've seen like injured people like

shambling up to the ferry and this is definitely a shambling gate And the other thing is that each of these

bootprints is weirdly wet It's it's not raining today It

hasn't rained in a few days actually It's it's overcast It could rain any minute it looks like But uh these

bootprints are definitely wet as though whatever as though whatever left them was soaking Um but the other one uh you

are also going to gain um a status you are going to gain the status uh

nauseiated three as as out of the barley comes uh a

shambling creature that I can only describe as a mummified waterlogged

corpse wearing some kind of ancient armor that you all have never seen before Um it's carrying a shield with

the emblems scratched off and a a sword that looks almost more dangerous from

rust than from its own points but it is definitely leveling this shield at you

and or the sword at you as it's comes shambling out of this out of the barley towards towards the two of you And the

nauseating the nauseated status you're getting is because this thing smells

awful It smells It smells like you would expect a body to smell rot and like the

smell of like moist standing water if you're familiar with that But then there's something else here something darker something you couldn't really

identify if you wanted to Um so you're kind of So while you're kind of you know trying to keep your freshly eaten lunch

down fry what are you doing when you see all this go down uh I'm so nauseated affects me too right

because I contributed Uh oh yeah that's true Um yes you are both uh Yes you are

both you are both nauseated and stressed right now Yeah So I I assume that not

only am I attempting to keep my lunch down uh so it is shambling at Lisa It is

it is shambling towards Lissa with a uh with a sword and unknown intent

for something to get its attention like a rock that I

can throw at it to Okay Um get it I'll say if you Yeah So so you're next to a

field I'd say like if you want to find like a rock um that's probably easy to find If you want to find a uh you know

there's probably like a farming implement of some kind nearby that you could grab There's like a hoe or a

shovel or something you could use to swing at it if you wanted to get it that way Um whatever however you want to

handle it Yeah Okay So I'd say Fry looks around sees a

um Fry will see a rake Okay old wooden

um with like just a few set of wooden prongs uh held together by like you know

thin strips of metal Okay And I would like to use I'd like to just

you know one get in the middle of it and then try just to like fend off whatever

attack it is is probably not a fighter but at least like being armed is some

kind of got to be some kind of advantage Uh could be Uh yeah So I'm going to go ahead and say that you can temporarily

add the uh the rake to your backpack as a positive tag Uh just wooden rake Um

whenever you're trying to do things with the rake that it's relevant for it will give you a plus one like any other tag

So um yeah let's add up your let's get your total power to uh take a uh to take

kind of a distracting I guess swing at this thing with your wooden rake Okay So I would

say I put under acrobatic agility Okay So and this is one of the ones I wanted

because that's your busiest moment of the day And now you're out here fighting a weird shambling corpse with a rake

figure out your power you also subtract the tier of the highest status affecting you which unfortunately is nauseated Oh

success in this game Um okay Okay And since this is a little more of a threat than usual we are going to uh deal with

this uh shambling creature uh using the

uh the the detailed roll Um so when you do a detailed action roll what happens

is you roll and you see if you succeed or get consequences or not and then you

spend your power one for one to do certain things to the threat Now luckily

for you even though your your final power was zero you always get a minimum

of one to spend So you can do the following things You can uh discover a

valuable detail or you can add a onepoint status

to the shambling corpse creature And I will tell you that in

this game adding statuses to things is how you overcome challenges most of the time

Okay Yeah that was going to be uh Yeah Uh challenges challenges have what's called limits which you could think of

like hit points in every other system And in this case you would want to uh overcome the uh limits on uh on this

thing uh to try and drive it off or destroy it or whatever you would like to do

Okay So I think I just want to apply the status to it Okay Um yeah it's a onepoint status Tell me

what you're tell me what you want to call it cuz you're you're clobbering this thing with a rake Yeah

Um I guess it's already shambling I don't

know what's what's a degree worse than shambling but maybe I don't know if crippled is the

right word because it's not alive but kind of like I just I I want it to stop moving

as fast as it is You're trying to like you're trying to like break a limb or something Yes Uh yeah Chris in the chat

recommends hobbled I like that one Yeah Okay Hobbled is good So you will give it the hobbled one status And now whenever

it tries to do anything uh or apply consequences using whenever anyone whenever you guys are trying to make a

roll against it now because it has this negative status you add that to your power too So this is advantageous to you

and it's also uh one step towards stopping this thing from moving Um you

you hit it in the leg I think with your rake You kind of go low You're like maybe sweep its legs out from under it

um you hit its leg where if this was a normal person it would sweep them off their leg and

it it doesn't it doesn't like break the bone like you would expect a bone to

break It's almost like it like has like a wet squelch and then it just like

splinters Um and this thing is still like it's limping in a way that if it

was a if it was alive which you can clearly tell it is not at this point it would be in agony Um but it is moving

much slower now Um I just want to add the small detail that it sounds like I

broke whatever skin is uh holding this thing together still marginally Yes And

as that breaks more smell bad smell comes out of it And I just am trying to

hold in all my lunch because it's like this is the good a good idea and a bad idea at the same time And no that

actually is perfect because I was actually going to describe that Did you are are you reading my notes um it

actually like it doesn't it doesn't break with blood or water It is it is

leaking a weird like pitch black ooze like Yeah it it's it's it's like it's it

kind of starts to slide down its leg Um and it's you can almost see that that is

kind of what's holding the leg together at this point which is part of why it's not very agile Ooze doesn't make a good kneebone Uh so Dunny Denny you drop uh

Willow off with her dad at the inn and you come back around the corner I'm assuming and you see this scene where uh

Lisa has spotted this weird shambling armored corpse and uh Fry clobers it in

the leg with a rake and it's still coming Uh what do you do

well having been told by um the the little girl that um there was

a something in the barley uh on on

Dunny's way back he he actually um took a side detour which is why he missed

this and hit the forge um to to grab his father's sword Uhoh Um and and comes

back with that Um Dunny's back everyone And he's armed Yeah Now now I should
