0:10
hello and welcome to the Blizzard watch podcast I'm your host Joe Perez uh
0:16
filling in for Matt today who uh right now is probably cursing his internet
0:22
provider from the in the the the fashion of uh James T Kirk taking to his knees
0:28
and yelling about con uh but I'm not by myself today joining me in my intrepid journey to fill that Gap is Liz Harper
0:36
our editor and chief how you doing tonight Liz uh howdy howdy and then joining us as a third seat we we love
0:43
him you know him you might love him I don't know your opinion of him but I think he's a pretty great guy uh Phil
0:49
how you doing today Phil I'm good I appreciate you hedging your bets uh they they may not they may not even love me
0:55
on purpose I have been mistaken for the other Phil before and been thanked for some of his articles
1:00
that is that is very very funny and very very true um I still remember when I
1:05
first started for the the the site way long ago uh getting mistaken for a lot of people uh and then being told that
1:12
was the worst thing that ever happened to Shaman writing you know well the usual it was back in the days of wow
1:19
Insider it was kind of a write of Passage where you were not a real writer
1:25
until someone emailed us to complain that you were the worst thing about wow Insider so yeah that just means you fit
1:33
in yeah my I remember my my real WR of passage was the one the the first BlizzCon that I worked for the the wow
1:39
Insider site um and somebody figured out who I was and threw a drink in my face
1:46
and and then went and bought me a drink and handed it to me and said I hate what
1:52
you say about Shaman but I respect your opinion and we want up becoming really good friends after that like it was
2:00
thaten life is weird uh but we're not here to talk about the old site or or things like that instead uh we're here
2:07
to talk about what's going on this week because there's there's a lot um it's
2:12
the first week of 2025 y'all uh and uh well we got our new release for release
2:19
content for uh a wow because one the anniversary event has finally ended uh
2:25
as of this recording it was the day prior uh so we're recording on the 7 it ended on it ended today with the reset I
2:32
believe yes yeah it ended this morning yeah um and apparently there was a lot of inserty what would happen to any of
2:39
your unused bronze celebration tokens we got some good news though at least they're not just going to go to waste like we originally thought uh they're
2:46
going to be converted into time warped badges at a rate of 20 to1 uh in patch
2:51
11.1 which is really really neat um some additional good go ahead it's
2:57
interesting because blizzard was encouraging everyone to like okay spend these before the event ends spend them
3:03
before the event ends go and buy time worked badges do it before the event ends and we were doing the same thing go
3:09
buy time warped badges go buy your stuff and then after just after it ends
3:15
blizzard says okay actually if you have any uh bronze celebration tokens left we'll convert them in the next patch
3:21
which I mean again good right like it's it's a process um I think they also probably
3:29
realized that people were gone for the holidays and maybe not even back yet or don't have access to their accounts and
3:34
so maybe doing something to help them out is not the end of the world which I think also partially informed their
3:40
decisions to do another thing uh which is the secrets event is still available to complete uh and you can still earn
3:47
the detective title uh an incognito an incognito however you want to say that
3:53
uh the in indecipherable fell cycle uh as long as you go and find Alex and dornal uh instead of the fair which I
4:00
think is really nice because I think a lot of people were worried about that as well it's like hey I'm traveling for the holidays I'm not going to have time to
4:06
finish this or in my case I worked too dang much uh so I can actually sit down
4:13
and finish this so you know good stuff all around I'll say that we did know that that was going to stick around
4:19
because Secrets is designed to be Evergreen content we just didn't know how exactly um and I don't think we'd
4:26
actually had any confirmation from blizzard exactly how until uh they moved uh Alex to dornal um I really hope they
4:32
do something with her uh to make her title even longer in the future yes uh
4:38
and not just to be done outdone with that or like I shouldn't say that that's not the only update there's several more
4:43
things uh you can finally return to khadgar uh if you noticed uh for the last several weeks uh there is a timer
4:51
that said Return to khadgar in X time uh well you can go do that now and uh the
4:57
there's another essentially chapter quest in our campaign uh which is the
5:02
fate of the Kieran tour story quest uh I have not had a chance to finish them uh
5:08
I'm partially through I just got to the part where I need to go to uh the land of the uh void bugs uh and deal with
5:16
them but I think it's really interesting that we're actually getting resolution
5:22
or at least some resolution or or progression while the expansion is still current like I'm not used to this
5:28
blizzard like you're you're I'm not used to you giving me like some form of payoff like immediately have you either
5:34
of you gone through and done it oh yeah no I I kind of expected that the thing with the Kieran tour um being displaced
5:41
would be something that we deal with across the expansion like think like the um the rebuilding tier quest line for
5:47
they went through pretty much all of dragonflight but uh it appears that they want to kind of leave the here and tour
5:53
in a maybe in a better State than the than the expansion found them right off the bat and I'm not upset about that
6:00
of course the other thing about that that suggests that we have maybe some
6:05
bigger stories to tell so we have more going on that we're going to need to focus on in future patches and maybe we
6:12
just don't don't have time or interest in spending the entire expansion figuring out what the deal is with the
6:17
Kieran well and I mean the Kieran tour are sort of uh important for what's going on uh and also we talked about
6:25
this on lore watch at least uh the Kieran tour dollon was as much a
6:32
dangerous object as it was a floating city base of operations uh it held a lot of artifacts
6:39
and a lot of very dangerous prisoners who are now free uh so we're starting to see some of the Fallout from that so not
6:46
everything is going to be nice and tidy uh and while the caror may be left in a better place than they were uh than they
6:52
were before this uh The Fallout from Dollar on exploding will probably be
6:57
long felt for a while or at least the impression that I get all right uh I believe there is also the turbulent time
7:04
ways event is going to be uh uh kicking off today as well do you anybody either you want to talk about that you can talk
7:10
about it um yeah I've actually already been doing it so if people missed this back in dragonflight which is the first
7:16
time they did it uh basically we are going to have it was 6 it's now 7 thank you Liz for catching me out on that uh
7:22
weeks in a row of time walking uh and for each dungeon you complete there you'll get a stacking buff that
7:27
increases your amount of XP uh earned uh all the way up to a whopping 30% after
7:33
you do four dungeons uh and then when you if you do this for five out of the
7:39
seven weeks you get that Master of time ways 30% buff you will be awarded a brand new Mount the timely buzzby which
7:46
appears to be a giant bee with a bronze dragon hourglass on its back that seems
7:51
is perfect it is perfect and I need it uh it's also which probably means
7:58
probably means I need to go play WoW instead of staring at my steam wish list
8:03
which is fair and we despite what we talked about on the pre-show uh at least the the time walking dungeons tend to be
8:08
relatively quick I believe oh yeah uh it's what Legion right now I think is the current one it is is M pandia Mr
8:15
Pandaria um they run relatively quickly and it's a good way to level alts like a really good way to level alts so if
8:21
you're been kind of sitting and waiting and and looking for you know leveling them uh basically for any sort of like
8:29
bonus or benefit cuz not only do you get that it also goes on top of your War band buff as well and it's just a it's
8:36
just a ton of XP just it just vomits XP at you at this point maybe I'll finally get around to leveling the Mage that I
8:42
was like sure I was going to level immediately and thought I might even play as a main this this expansion yeah
8:48
I I think pretty sure pretty sure she's level 71 I'm pretty sure this is going to
8:54
cause me to go through and just level all of my characters that are sitting at 70 because it'll just be
9:00
good idea yeah and you got there is a uh there is both the five War band mentors
9:05
thing that I haven't gotten yet um but there is also someone pointed out to me a feed of strength for getting one of
9:11
every class to max level and if there's anything I love it's completely meaningless achievements listen I like my fake nerd points I I I need them as
9:18
well so I'm right there with you yeah so I'm probably going to use this to get uh to get those I did a little time walking
9:24
today uh on my lunch break actually ran two dungeons on a level 10 Rogue who is now level 19 yeah yeah and I think uh I
9:33
who was it that was in raid talk I think it was a do might have been a do might have been six uh we're talking about
9:39
during the uh anniversary event two time walking Dungeons and answering one
9:44
question was a level uh if you're above 70 uh the trivia question so the XP is
9:52
about the same but if you get the stacking buff you're going to be blowing through levels like crazy so no reason not to give it a shot if you're
9:58
interested in it it's even stacked with dark moon fair right now so uh it can go really fast this week if you want to
10:05
Zoomies many many zooms uh not to be outdone with the turbulent time waves
10:10
that we do see p uh patch 11.1 PTR is now live uh with raid and dungeon
10:16
testing starting this week uh there's a couple new pieces here Liz do you want to talk about that with the the new
10:23
graphic and the new warb band stuff uh yes um they I mean we're just starting
10:29
getting data mining from the PTR people are just starting to log on uh as we're recording this but one of the things
10:36
that really called out to me and actually I think I saw Phil mention it before I saw it is there's a new
10:42
swirlies graphic I don't know if this comes across very well without sharing
10:47
an image with you but you know all of those swirly things on the ground that you are not supposed to stand in that
10:54
sometimes have very vague edges that catch you when you are really sure you
11:00
were not standing in it now they're much crisper looking circles which I think is
11:05
great as long as those circles are actually in the accurate place which there have been some problems with that
11:12
during the world the war within so far so we'll see I think it's good to make it just make these things clear Clarity
11:19
is good we are also getting some new campsite options for our war band which
11:25
is it is a super pointless cosmetic thing that I am so excited for it it is
11:33
this is so pointless and yet I am so here for it so you of course have your
11:40
traditional campsite but you'll have other ones uh wow head is reporting you
11:45
will also have cultist Quay the arrai ship Airship delve in hallof Fall the
11:51
gasio grand Gallery the site of the new undermine raid do do any of us really
11:57
want to hang out in the gashi I don't know uh freyal spring the earn Village
12:03
South of Doral and um another campfire location that W had said is is seemingly
12:09
set on the aisle of Dorne onaran Plains bth or other similarly lush green zone
12:16
and I think I think it kind of looks like anoran it's Lush and green that's that's
12:22
what you got yeah it definitely looks that the one thing that I I was looking at this and I saw was the uh the frey
12:28
wolf spring if your characters aren't lounging in that hot spring I'm going to be very
12:34
upset please let that be the case I didn't even think about that I I I have
12:39
to say though that some of our characters some of the things in the warband screen are a little weird like
12:47
dual wield wielding characters I have a dual wielding for V Pera Fury Warrior
12:54
who's on my warband screen and she like holds her weapons while she's sit she
12:59
holds her weapons in front of her like crossed over and I'm like you're just you're just going to stab yourself over
13:05
there it's dangerous and so I hope maybe we get a few more cosmetic improvements
13:12
uh also I I still have that weird thing where my warband screen like cuts off
13:18
the character on the far right they just don't fit on the screen I really have to mess with my graphic settings and Shrink
13:25
things down for them to all fit on the screen which I have never been able to figure out out so but I am I am super
13:31
hyped about this uh we are no doubt going to hear much much more about patch
13:36
11.1 in the future as we get more PTR testing in we are guessing that the
13:42
patch will go live in early February and uh we'll see we'll see what happens uh
13:47
one thing I did want to go back on real quick because I was looking at this while you were talking and I thought was really interesting go back to the swirls
13:53
thing uh I'm sure not everybody is going to care about it but I definitely do uh
13:59
which is one of the the biggest complaints I've ever had about ground effects and wow is and I'm sure every
14:06
single person has suffered from it the ground effect being larger than the visual makes you think it is so looking
14:13
at how they're doing it is the graphic will still exist for like a ground effect but that defined Edge that is
14:19
going to be really really bright and it's going to be exactly you need to be outside of that bright ring and that's
14:26
where your safety is and I think that that's I love this I love this I know
14:32
two of our Raiders that will continue to die to it and I'm going to make fun of him when I talk with him next time uh
14:38
but I think it's a vast improvement from where we were which is that nebulous and
14:43
especially when you're like dealing with like purple on purple or red on red which happens all of the time in all of these raids it's hard to know where to
14:50
stand and whether you're safe and I really like that I like that they it it feels like an accessibility change right
14:57
almost and I I'm all for that CU it makes the game more viable for more
15:03
people so super happy with that uh yeah I'm very I'm very excited for this there
15:08
will be no unfortunately there will not be as many times where I can claim oh I was definitely standing outside that because you know I'll know Circle has a
15:16
very defined Edge uh you know what's what is the mechanic on on the spider
15:23
Duo I forget what its official name is the Rings oh the uh
15:29
the Imp impan Rings yeah yes uh so second to last boss wow I'm forgetting
15:36
everything same tonight second uh the council fight on in narbar Palace there
15:41
are these series of rings and they do have a pretty defined Edge but for a
15:48
while the graphic and the actual effect were not in the same place there was a
15:54
graphical mismatch that uh could throw you off so sometimes even these defined
16:00
edges aren't as helpful as you think they'll be but I I I hope this is you
16:05
know part of a kind of rethinking of the visuals here and we will definitely have
16:10
these things in their little crisply defined spaces yes I'm all for it uh
16:17
there are also some upcoming changes to the war within season 2 dungeons who wants to talk about that I we brought
16:23
the guy who wrote the article so I'm I'm pointing at Phil yeah that that sounds like me um yeah so season two we've got
16:32
a uh we get to our our brand new dungeon pool for Mythic plus is changing it's uh continue to be a mix of old and new
16:39
which is cool um and they've kind of as many dungeons as they could this time around seem to be Goblin themed so you
16:45
know we've got the motherload we've got the cinder Brew metery um etc etc but
16:50
with these um always when they scale these up to Mythic plus they always have to uh tweak them in some ways for the
16:57
current patch of done the current patches dungeons it's cuz you know we haven't actually seen things like Cinder
17:02
Brew metery or The Rookery in Mythic plus yet and then for some of them it's just you know they've desperately needed a rebalance for years looking at you um
17:10
the uh theater of pain um we'll see how this plays out over the next 6 weeks because that is how long the testing
17:17
schedule for the dungeons is set to go but we had data mine changes come out from mad and there were a number of
17:23
changes that were some dungeons were just numeric like Cinder Brew meter mostly seemed to be numeric stuff but
17:29
then we've got ones like the there's a change to the fir a large set of changes to the first bosses in mechagon Workshop
17:36
which is also in the spool that basically make that an entirely new boss fight um it's going to be interesting
17:42
yeah cuz if if people remember that dungeon at all um previously you would
17:48
your tank would take the humanoid one who had the metal armor around to the Hammers around that side of the room and
17:53
smash its armor off because you couldn't damage it while everyone else worried about the um the tank that charged
17:59
around no mercy um and now uh no mercy charges a little faster but it's not as
18:06
deadly to just have alive it's not pulsing AOE damage everywhere in the room um the pummeler doesn't start with
18:13
its Maximum Armor it's like an ultimate ability but more importantly if you kill one of them first um they start pulsing
18:19
lightning damage so groups are going to have to completely change how that handle that fight CU you know have to effectively deal with both bosses at the
18:26
same time so um it's going to be an interesting uh some of these interesting tweaks um I'll I'm going to call the
18:33
only dungeon out that I didn't see a lot of changes that I felt need them though dark flame cleft has about the miserable
18:39
the most miserable last one-third of a dungeon that I can think of um starting with the uh part where you escort a
18:45
candle through the a a candle on a mine cart through the dark and have to wander out into the darkness where you cannot
18:51
be healed to retrieve candles and bring them back to the cart the only data mind change to that part was a change to a
18:59
effect which is effectively something that runs on the servers and data mining can't tell you what that change actually
19:04
was just the in just the input number um that seems like it's still there and it got some kind of numeric change um I'm
19:12
really hoping we see some kind of change to that and then the fight against the darkness the final boss where you are
19:17
not only trying to fight the boss keep yourselves alive and uh everything else you're also protecting a candle because
19:23
if it knocks that candle out there is not really a way to relight it to full strength and you will get feared uh
19:30
about every 10 seconds again no changes uh data mind for the darkness fight so
19:36
I'm really hoping that dungeon testing uh shows us some changes to those that just couldn't be picked up because as
19:42
Wowhead pointed out if there were changes that added new abilities to enemies uh data mining wouldn't pick it
19:48
up for various reasons um I'm I'm just really hoping the dark flame cleft got the changes we all hope it will cuz the
19:54
others the others seem at least interesting in making like you know making things that were two deadly safer
19:59
or making bosses that were kind of boring a little more interesting but like dark flame CFT needs a lot of work
20:06
before season 2 starts so it'll get tested twice over the uh for two separate weeks over the next uh six
20:13
weeks so here's hoping okay yeah I I hope that they take a look dark I I dark flame CFT is one of
20:20
the ones that I was dreading uh not that the current they're not that there aren't current problematic ones that
20:27
people really really like running right now uh but I can see that just being
20:32
awful in pugs or pickup groups just later on hopefully they get they look at it and do some tweaking I was looking at
20:38
some of the changes to theater of pain uh glad to see a lot of those adjustments they seem like they're minor
20:44
but it's definitely huge quality of life uh to make those dungeons a lot more viable and a lot less deadly uh or at
20:51
least I shouldn't say less deadly a lot more manageable right so I'm like I'm enjoying that and hopefully like you
20:58
said hopefully testing will uh do something for dark flame cleft cuz otherwise you're going to see two things happen you're going to see hard
21:04
composition requirements for people with immunities uh for part of the M cart
21:09
thing and you're going to see uh for the last boss people trying to figure out how to cheese through uh the candle
21:16
effect uh to either a cap it alive longer or B kill the boss before they have to worry about it um which is just
21:23
unfun I think yeah and at hierarchies that also just becomes untenable so yeah
21:28
yeah 10 and above I can see that just being a nightmare but hey that's what testing's there for uh so if you are
21:34
interested in this the upcoming season get on the PTR do the testing for the Dungeons and submit your feedback it
21:41
does appear that they have been listening to it so now is your time to shine uh if you are so inclined uh I
21:48
think that's it for Wow news is there anything else that we haven't talked about or that we missed nothing I can
21:54
think of we're kind of in that that pre patch lull now uh we got our seven weeks of turbul time ways and if Dragon flight
21:59
is anything to go by the patch usually comes shortly after so fair enough uh I
22:05
think we're going to move on to some Diablo news though because I think that's uh there there are people that still play Diablo right like y I mean at
22:11
least a couple of you do maybe uh uh Diablo Diablo was actually
22:17
my most played game last year in my uh Playstation end of year wrapup which is
22:23
something I I kind of find that to be a bummer because I do I do enjoy it but at
22:30
the same time should this be the thing I have spent most of my time playing in
22:35
the last year on my PlayStation I don't know I don't know that's fair uh so who
22:41
wants to talk about Diablo II season 33 CU that seems to have been a little bit
22:46
of a Kur fuffle uh yeah that's an interesting one we are predicting season
22:51
33 will end uh sometime in February and uh but it actually ended this weekend
22:58
with no notice at all players who were online just got to notice that the Realms are the seasonal Realms are
23:04
shutting down in a half hour that was all the notice anyone got and usually uh
23:10
the Diablo I team is pretty good about giving two weeks notice uh sometimes running a PTR uh but yeah yeah uh the
23:20
seasons across all regions shut down uh Pez radar Adam posted on the forums that
23:26
this was actually a mistake it was a miscommunication they accidentally shut down season 33 and in in Diablo that's
23:35
kind of a problem because when a season ends there's this automatic kind of cycle to transfer your seasonal
23:41
characters onto the normal Realms and to mail all of the gear that your seasonal
23:48
characters have to your main characters and put it in your main stash on the non-seasonal realm so that already
23:55
happened everyone their seasonal characters should moved all of their gear was in their stash on the
24:01
non-seasonal Realms and blizzard is kind of like oopsie I I have a big feeling
24:07
that uh there probably wasn't like an undo button for this this was not an error they anticipated having so they
24:16
have re-enabled season 33 but it's been a little bumpy a lot of players are
24:21
reporting that in game progress has been reset that their Paragon points have been reset uh so it's a little frust
24:28
ating I'm surprised I'm not surprised that this happened in the first place just because
24:35
of a miscommunication they accidentally ended an entire season I know Diablo II is now
24:40
our last generation Diablo game but there's still a lot of people who play it so this this one surprised me it
24:47
looks like blizzard has done what they could to fix it but it's it's been a little Rocky and uh season 33 in case
24:55
you're interested in a little Diablo II is probably running for maybe three or four more weeks so you have time to play
25:01
it if you still want to fair enough uh the next item on our list is apparently
25:07
that the original Diablo is going to be available on Game Pass what that's cool
25:13
who wants to talk about that I don't know anything about it but I do know that's cool I I had to check first to
25:18
see if this was a typo I was like did they mean Diablo 4 nope it's the original it's the ultimate edition of uh
25:24
Diablo for consoles yeah I mean I think that's actually really cool because if you have not played the original Diablo
25:30
it's a really great opportunity for you to uh maybe give it a shot uh especially
25:36
if you're a Game Pass user uh it looks like they're going to wind up doing
25:41
another what they basically refresh the lineup every month or so every month or
25:47
so yeah uh sometimes multiple times where like five or six games will leave five or six games will come on uh we
25:54
were kind of curious what from Blizzard's archives would make it way on to Game Pass so seeing Diablo make it
26:01
there is pretty cool um I'm curious if we'll see some of the other stuff um in
26:07
particular cuz blizzard they released the the Retro like blizzard arcade type
26:13
stuff not too long ago or maybe longer than I remember and I'm wondering if we'll start seeing some of that wind up
26:19
in the game pass in the near future so that people can experience some of the classics on that were uh in console form
26:26
before but on modern day consoles like lost Vikings or uh hack maybe Blackthorne uh which is a game like boy
26:33
almost no one I remember played besides like me and like three of my friends but I think that's interesting I think
26:39
that's really cool and just added value to Game Pass I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna point out here arcade collection
26:45
came out four years ago and uh also yes I would love to I would personally love to see Starcraft 2 come out on this
26:50
thing give me Starcraft 2 on Game Pass I'll play it yeah you know so I guess we can Branch off into some speculation a
26:57
little bit on that so so we know that like Phil Spectre and uh really really
27:02
loves Starcraft um and there's been speculation that there might potentially
27:07
be a future Resurgence of Starcraft somewhere or at least hopium uh that there will be I think that you would
27:14
start seeing all the content uh for Starcraft become available on Game Pass
27:20
probably to gauge interest and see if there's metrics or numbers because I think that's one thing that they can do
27:26
that maybe they weren't able to do before cuz Starcraft numbers themselves through
27:32
like Battle.net or anything like that I don't know what the data collection rate
27:37
was for there but it was I don't want to say a smaller audience because blizzard has a huge audience but Game Pass is
27:44
evitably larger and it reaches more people and so if they were to make like
27:49
Starcraft available on Game Pass and then see how many people download it that could be I do need to interrupt you
27:55
I do need to interrupt you because they actually did did they did in November I had to go check to make sure I wasn't
28:01
hallucinating Starcraft remastered and uh the complete campaign to Starcraft 2 were added to game box Game Pass PC
28:10
edition in November so aha if you wna if you want to play that you want to refresher you want to check it out for
28:16
the first time because you've never played Starcraft because blizzard kind of abandoned it uh it's there it's there
28:23
on PC game pass and if game PC game pass isn't your thing going back to Diablo app you can also buy it on uh GG for 10
28:30
bucks and it comes with the Hellfire expansion because well what is Diablo 1 without the Hellfire expansion a
28:35
miserable pile of secrets uh and then apparently it is the
28:41
darkening of Tristram time in Diablo I so what's going on with this it's uh another anniversary
28:47
right I I mean we we celebrate this we were just talking about how you can play the original Diablo on Game Pass right
28:55
now but darkening of Tristram is B basically the original Diablo only in
29:00
Diablo I so it's a it's an anniversary event comes around every January and uh
29:07
you get to go into like the classic Tristram Cathedral and play some of that
29:13
early Diablo One content and uh it's cool it's also you know we've seen this
29:19
for several years now so it's starting to get a little syy it hasn't been updated it also when you go into the
29:26
cathedral it uh changes your graphic setting to retrovision so you get the authentic
29:33
Diablo 1 experience so it's a fun way to revisit it without actually having to go
29:39
all the way back and play Diablo 1 but you know right now you could actually also go back and play Diablo 1 it's a
29:46
great game I don't know that it's the game play feels a little a little aged
29:53
yeah but uh I I still think Diablo 1 has a really stri ring story and uh that
30:00
that one stuck with me the end of that game has stuck with me for many years now we just W up doing a whole uh
30:07
tinfoil hat slash uh what if Episode based off of uh one of our listeners
30:12
questions uh from based off of of the story of Diablo 1 so uh Shameless
30:19
self-promotion go check out that lore watch um but yeah that story definitely stuck with you especially when you get
30:24
to the end uh and then seeing how Diablo I kicks off and you realize how much the ending
30:31
of Diablo 1 defined the rest of what was to come like it is it is wild but yeah
30:37
there there's your Diablo news for this week um there is a little bit of OverWatch news which I will talk about
30:43
because I think I'm the only one that even really plays it um the availability of the 6v6 world queue has been extended
30:50
through January 21st uh and some people are asking well why does it have to go away at all uh the answer is because
30:57
they're experimenting with other 6v6 Q's uh which will be kicking off on January
31:03
21st for the next batch of them uh which are going to be uh which I think is interesting but not only that herob
31:10
balance changes for standard formats will not apply to the 6v6 format including a standard hero balance that
31:17
is releasing today uh which I haven't gone through the notes yet but I find that
31:22
interesting that they're not applying hero balances to the 6364 format because
31:28
they're still balancing the heroes for a 5v5 play which that's that's really
31:34
really interesting and I guess that could be you could wind up with some really awkward gameplay here if they're
31:39
trying to do both at the same time I mean yeah and does this mean they're
31:45
going to maintain two Divergent sets of Heroes um maybe and I don't well
31:52
actually let me let me think about that for a second probably not uh I think if
31:58
anything they're probably going to wind up making a hard decision soon and I think either 6v6 will remain its own
32:05
like arcade thing that will never be balanced and will be left as the wild west of
32:11
OverWatch um where they'll eventually do uh the you know words are failing me
32:19
today I have not had nearly enough C I apologize uh where they'll do like the balances flow through and whatever
32:26
happens happens or they might be testing the waters still to see if 6v6 comes
32:32
back as the standard format uh this is where I'm going to talk about my recent favorite game for this type of of hero
32:38
shooter because I think it's relevant uh but I think that they're looking at
32:44
what's happening with Marvel Rivals and realizing how much they lost by going
32:51
from 6v6 to 5v5 cuz I know a ton of players that stopped playing at that
32:57
point um 6v6 was their preferred way to play it was a lot of fun and if you had
33:02
a group of six friends that played constantly going to 5v5 meant somebody was sitting in the wings waiting uh and
33:09
it made it far less of a social game and I've talked about this before there's
33:14
social gaming is a thing that still exists where people will play a game not
33:20
because they want to play the game but because they want to play with their friends and OverWatch with a six player
33:26
Q it was very easy to get a group of people together to just relax uh talk on
33:31
Discord or teams speak or whatever kick back and like just do goofy banana stuff
33:38
and not take it too seriously and when you take that away they're not most groups aren't going to want to exclude
33:44
somebody they're going to go find another game to play and that's just how it is right like that that's it's a
33:50
natural thing so I think they might be testing the waters to see if this becomes a permanent thing what do you guys think you would think blizzard
33:55
would remember uh about uh reducing group sizes after the number of times they've done that in their in
34:01
the history of their various games but as we've thermized I don't think they're various departments ever talk to each
34:07
other fair enough it's uh on a more serious it is interesting on a more
34:13
serious I know a lot of a lot of people from different venues who have you know who were OverWatch one players who were
34:19
not enthused about OverWatch 2 and who are absolutely wild about uh Marvel
34:24
Rivals I know uh one another streamer particular who has who made it his
34:29
mission to get into that Grandmaster rank as soon as he could and did it and was still playing the game just nuts for
34:36
Rivals um in a way that I haven't heard him talk about OverWatch in years um and
34:41
yeah it like you said it would not surprise me if they are really looking at uh Rivals kind of eating their lunch
34:47
right now and going how do we get how do we get that back how do we become if not the premier you know team hero shooter
34:52
anymore how do we at least become you know not not the joke not oh OverWatch used to be good yeah and and we've
35:00
talked about this before and I don't want to beager the point so I'll just I'll make it quick OverWatch was
35:05
lightning in a bottle when it dropped in much the same way that wow was there it was doing things that other hero
35:11
Shooters weren't doing at the time was easily accessible they were very smart in their marketing for it making it free
35:17
for people that had a year uh subscription or six-month subscription uh for Wow and basically trying to get
35:23
people to play it and you had a bunch of passionate devs behind it um and then
35:29
life happens things changed the dev core changed people that were passionate about the project left uh Esports isn't
35:36
as much of a focus anymore if at all uh which OverWatch was positioned to be
35:41
like this big king of Esports and they sort of lost sight of what was fun and
35:48
then you have Marvel Rivals which is doing all the same things OverWatch did when it first released hero shooter
35:53
fresh fresh aspects on it and a passionate Dev base uh that we were talking about this in
35:59
the pre-show uh go back and watch the uh Dev diaries for the Marvel Rivals group
36:06
they're just thankful like they're just happy and thankful that people are playing and enjoying their game um and
36:12
like you don't hear that anymore so from from OverWatch right like you don't hear people that are just oh we really
36:18
excited about the game we're making not nearly as much as we used to you know not when Kaplan was sitting in front of
36:23
a fire talking about how awesome all the heroes were or you know being really excited that the junker Queen was going
36:30
to be around or you you don't hear that anymore and it just felt like it we talk about maintenance mode it almost kind of
36:37
feels like OverWatch is falling into that category and like you said they're just they're trying to figure maybe
36:42
their way out of that hole and I hope they do because OverWatch at its core is a good game it just needs
36:49
love and without that passion you don't have a good game but I think that's going to do it for OverWatch uh the
36:57
other thing happening this week which I think is super fun and started uh earlier this week Sunday I believe is
37:04
that awesome Games Done Quick is happening uh and it it's running through January 11th this weekend to raise money
37:10
for the prevent Cancer Foundation a very important foundation that is near and dear to my heart at the very least uh
37:17
there's a lot of really fun games that uh have already been run and that are being run have either of you been paying
37:23
attention to it I have not had time but I am looking forward to to catching up on YouTube I mean all this is being live
37:30
streamed you can turn on the gdq stream anytime and just find games and games
37:36
and games and games and they're all going to be fun but uh shortly after usually the next day they'll be on
37:42
YouTube so even if you miss it you can still tune in and enjoy these crazy
37:47
speeduns they're doing they've been doing it quicker than next day like they've been within hours of the Run
37:52
completing they've been up on YouTube so shout out to the the agdq crew who's
37:58
been doing that uh that's absolutely phenomenal absolutely and I know MIT
38:04
Mitch is going to be there in person this year and I I am extremely jealous he's he's gonna be he's gonna be there
38:11
over the weekend that's pretty I've always wanted to go to one of those uh and just participate in the audience
38:18
just because it's just a thing that's on my bucket list oh yeah uh but also I want to be there for games like squirrel
38:23
with a gun uh because games like squirrel with a gun are they're just goofy they don't make any sense it's
38:30
absolutely Bonkers uh and seeing that in a group of people all laughing and having a good time uh would be
38:36
absolutely Phenom like a really great time and I can see Mitch being there for the awful block which would make a lot
38:42
of sense oh he did he did recommend he did recommend everyone watch the Offa
38:49
block so there you go you have to um the Winter's awful block and The Summer's silly block I destroy my sleep schedule
38:56
at least once watch as much of them as I can absolutely um and they were actually nice enough this year the uh shout out
39:03
to the gdq web team the schedule actually specifically calls out which games are now part of the awful block
39:09
rather than having to look at them and go well that sounds bad you they now have a special highlighting for people
39:14
who are really looking for the awful block games to to find them on the schedule um gdq is a big event in our
39:21
house my wife and I um we have both donated in the past because like Joe said the prevent Cancer Foundation is very important to us um whenever it's
39:28
gdq we it is it is on our TV 24/7 like uh my PS5 gets no game work that week
39:34
because it's rning the Twitch app to show us gdq all week long um I especially want to shout out one that I
39:39
watched last night that was just phenomenal um a 303 minute estimate run
39:45
of breath of the wild uh two players One controller yes um it is so wild
39:51
especially when they start talking explaining some of the tricks like um these things are hard enough to pull off on your own when you're running you know
39:58
boats halves of the controller but now you've got these guys passing control off um up to 12 times per second to pull
40:04
off some of these tricks like between the different halves of the controller it's a phenomenal one um there's also
40:11
one coming up later this week on Friday they I want to call out which is Crazy Taxi with a live backing band it's
40:16
either Friday or Saturday yeah one of three one of three music one of three musical uh themed
40:23
games in the speedrun there's also somebody who will be playing New Super Mario Brothers for the Wii playing piano
40:30
and using head motions to control the game that's not my favorite one my absolute favorite one is and I've
40:36
watched him do this sax it's Dr duot Dr duot playing Elden ring on an electronic
40:42
saxophone it is absolutely insane I have watched his streams and it is it is I
40:50
can barely play Elden ring on a controller and he's playing it on an
40:55
electronic saxophone and making me look like I'm chump and I here for it like I
41:01
love stuff like that I'm so here for it uh are there other ones that you are interested or that that you are excited
41:08
that are going to be played uh in the block I I I've have some that I definitely want to call out but Liz are
41:15
there any that you are really really want to catch up on or see there's nothing in particular I'm
41:22
just gonna I'm just going to turn on Twitch probably after we're done here I support this Phil um I mean yeah I'm
41:28
kind of like Liz I kind of grab I'll kind of grab whatever um I am looking forward to some of the ones from uh at
41:34
the beginning of the awful block uh Superman 64 is back that game is notoriously trash y um and uh there is
41:42
one uh shortly after midnight on Thursday um there is a game called golf
41:48
with your grandmother and I need to see what that is about okay uh yeah no
41:54
that's going to be an absolute riot of a time I can already tell uh one that I'm actually really interested in is wind
42:01
blown uh it's the next game from motion twin it just released in early axis I
42:06
believe uh motion twin being the folks behind uh dead cells uh and it's a Arena
42:14
Rog like uh very similar to uh Hades Hades 2 that type of game and I'm really
42:20
curious because there are already speeduns for it for three player all-
42:26
encounter I want to see what this game looks like I've only seen people play it uh single player I'd want to see what the
42:32
multiplayer looks like so I'm super here for it uh the other one which is a personal favorite game of mine as far as
42:38
first person shooters go uh is bullets per minute which is a rhythm shooter I
42:43
love Rhythm games and it's definitely one that I I'm I'm looking forward to seeing people run it's going to happen
42:50
at 1:00 a.m. on Friday I'm not sleeping on Friday apparently because immediately
42:56
after that is Castle man Dracula X which I have to watch uh and there's just so many really really good games uh I'm
43:04
excited for this particular G uh gdq uh like and like Phil said it's one
43:11
of those things that just it's constantly on my monitors or my TV or wherever I'm I'm at it's on my second
43:16
monitor at work while I'm working between meetings uh sometimes during meetings don't tell my boss
43:23
uh but I really do like all the cool stuff and crazy texi with the live band
43:29
I'm so here for this I need this so bad uh and I cannot wait uh to to hear it
43:36
although it does look like it is a four piece so you've got a vocals guitar a uh
43:43
drums and uh bass and that's it which is great that's perfectly fine I cannot wait to see what happens with that I do
43:50
want to call out one more because I forgot about it but somebody uh I was looking back to see cuz we talked about on we were looking forward to in watch
43:57
Discord and i' forgotten about this uh extremely uh Indie PS1 game no one can
44:03
stop Mr Domino uh is it's certainly one of the most games of all time and I'm
44:09
looking for to seeing a speedrun of it it's uh it's exactly what it sounds like you're you're an anthropomorphic Domino
44:16
uh in a house that has been set up to be a domino course it is uh it has kind of the kind of the spirit of uh Katamari
44:23
damy years before that game ever came out and I am I remember it fondly because it was on
44:29
one of the first PS1 demo discs I ever had and I am I am really yeah way back
44:35
when think it came with a magazine um so really looking forward to that one that
44:40
one is in the early hours so probably catch it on YouTube like Liz talked about because they are really getting
44:45
these up ASAP so heck yeah all right I think that's going to do it for game
44:52
news I think there's a little site news and which I'm going to throw it over to Liz though so Liz if you don't mind yes
44:59

45:40
experience so you can read blizzardwatch without the advertisements we also got Michael upgraded his pledge to
45:48
$50 that that helps us out so much for those of you who are up at this tier and
45:55
uh well I add a shout out to the other people who support us at the $50 level David Brent Tyler Josh Nicholas Guy Seth
46:04

47:14
podcasts we are still a little lower on patreon than I would like to be we're just under
47:20
$4,000 which we try to keep it around $4,000 but uh particularly uh ads on the
47:27
podcast have really been helped keep the site keep the site even on an even Keel here and uh all of this is thanks to you

48:18
first for your questions it's our little way of saying thank you uh also you can send us information through or questions
48:25
through patreon uh which will usually ENT entail Dan sending it to us with a
48:30
cat meme uh or some other meme that has tickled his fancy at that time so if you want us to have your question sent to us
48:37
with a meme you can do it that way as well if you can't support us on patreon there are a number of other ways to support us as well which does include uh
48:44
sharing our content leaving comments on our YouTube videos or likes uh for the
48:50
content as well all that stuff does matter uh believe it or not the algorithm does actually pay attention
48:55
when you share our content through like Spotify or apple podcast or anywhere
49:00
that podcasts are found if you share that link with people it does take a look at that and that does actually make
49:06
a huge difference for us and does help support us just as much uh as you giving
49:11
us money uh so we we appreciate that uh I think we have time for a question and
49:17
I think this is an important question and it comes from our friend T semi who loves to send us questions and we
49:22
appreciate all the questions you send us to tamy uh and it's what is your favorite moment from any game you played
49:28
this year and what is your favorite blizzard watch podcast discussion from this year so I'm going to start with
49:35
Phil what is your favorite moment from any game you played this year man put me on the spot right away
49:41
yeah man um so the one the game that absolutely sticks out of my head the
49:47
most that I played was uh Dragon Age The Veil guard and um I'm going to have to
49:52
give it to uh I mean really just the the moment in the ending that we all knew
49:58
was coming I don't want to give any more spoilers than that for people who might still be playing it but like there is a
50:03
spot there's there's an event that happens in the end game that had been predicted all you know you've been
50:09
calling it all along but you didn't quite see the circumstances of it and the dialogue options in that moment are
50:14
just so Mah like for everything else that you know any other quibbles we may
50:20
have at that game that particular dialogue segment is like a reminder of BioWare at their finest and I absolutely
50:26
loved it and also the one I picked was just a big old kick in the heart so um really enjoyed that
50:32
so Liz man you you really stole my thunder there uh I I have to also say
50:38
Veil guard a slightly different moment that uh I also can't completely talk
50:44
about because of spoilers but it was something something extremely bad happened something extremely bad
50:50
happened that I did not see coming and it was like it was one of those moments where it just it breaks your heart
50:56
you've got got something that you really cared about and it has it has gone very
51:01
wrong and you know you might not think of something like that as oh this is my favorite video game moment of the year
51:08
but sometimes it's those stories that break your heart that stick with you it is stories that have an emotional impact
51:15
that you remember I've played a lot of games this year I have enjoyed a lot of games but it is those those shocks those
51:23
kicks that sometimes they just stick in your head forever like how I still
51:28
remember the end of Diablo 1 when I first watched it and your character
51:34
shoves a soul Stone through your skull those moments those moments of
51:40
surprise shock fear horror those can stick with you for a long time so that
51:46
moment I hated it but also it really made me feel something and that's that's
51:51
important in any kind of Storytelling I would agree um I don't know if have one
51:57
singular moment that I really enjoyed from gaming it it is tough
52:03
um I've been thinking about this while I I kicked to you guys so I can have time to go through the Rolodex and uh I
52:10
really am coming up with a blank the only if you want some time to think I can cover the one I had that wasn't Veil
52:16
guard go for it oh uh so as I mentioned I spent uh the last month of the year playing I was a teenage exoc colonist
52:22
which is a narrative based game it's got a little it's got a little card game involved in it to determine whether you
52:28
win or fail events but for the most part it's kind of like a extremely Choice heavy visual novel in the way it plays
52:34
out and as Liz will attest the first time through that game when you're playing it blind um it's incredibly sad
52:42
um and it's another it's another one of those things that has emotional impacts where even things you thought you were doing good at the time um can like come
52:49
back and like I will say that it has motivated me there is one particular character in that game uh shout out to
52:56
to whoever did the majority of the writing for tangent um most of my effort in continuing runs of that game has been
53:02
trying to make a way to have tangent have a happy ending and I think I succeeded on the last playthrough that I did but just like this one character and
53:10
her whole Arc stuck with me enough that I like that that game resonated with me
53:15
in a way that I really did not expect going into it um it was just like oh this is a funny little name this is A10
53:22
or $15 game I'll give it a try and like it consumed me for the month of December
53:27
and so like aside from Veil guard I would say that um the the fir the
53:33
completion of the first Loop of I was a teenage exoc colonist was was my my other favorite moment of the year yeah
53:41
yeah there is oh boy that one yeah there I I think the instinct to to claim um
53:48
Whatchamacallit uh Veil guard is really really easy it feels like a a for me a
53:55
cheat um but I want to say like I think I'm G
54:00
to go with Marvel Rivals like playing it for the first time and so I'm sure
54:05
people are going to be like oh it's just the flavor of the month thing but and I've talked about this on the podcast before it it really is that capture of
54:12
that feeling of just fun and joy of when I first played OverWatch and I remember
54:18
playing OverWatch with my friends and you know we had a great time it was you know when we'd be done raing I would F
54:26
fill would joke that I would log uh I would go to log immediately after raid for a while but that's because that's
54:31
what I was doing is as soon as we were done with raiding I was playing OverWatch with my friends and sometimes
54:37
this was people like workc Cho and raids uh and sometimes this was my local gaming group but it was always just a
54:44
lot of fun and just kicking back and enjoyment and this is when playing Marvel Rivals it was the first time that
54:50
I had felt something very similar to that in a while and getting into groups with my local friends and playing with
54:57
them and US picking Heroes based off the fact that they had synergies together and and like everybody being dead silent
55:05
at the start of a match so we can listen to the interaction between the characters cuz when you're in the room
55:11
they talk to each other just like an OverWatch but there's a lot more lines um and they got like actual voice actors
55:17
people who were voice actors for the animated shows or uh did stuff for like
55:23
the motion Comics or that you've seen or or other video games and brought them in
55:28
to do the voice over work for these characters in a hero shooter something you normally don't see and just
55:34
everybody being dead silent and then oh that was hilarious dude that's so great we got to try this next combination and
55:40
hearing everybody gets so excited about it and not caring that we got our butts blown off the stage immediately uh by a
55:47
Jeff the land shark just throwing us off the stage laughing the entire time and just having a good time like that that
55:54
for me is my one moment uh at least from gaming that really is going to stick with me um and as far as podcast
56:01
discussions go that one's also really hard it's really tricky we talk about a lot of stuff that I really enjoy uh and
56:08
I always enjoy discussing not just with Matt and and Liz uh but also when we
56:14
have guests on like Corey or Phil or when we have uh other uh friends from
56:20
the site joining us for like tabletop stuff or or whatever the case is um but
56:26
think my favorite podcast moment uh was when I convinced Ben bro to come on the
56:31
podcast um I love Ben if you're listening to this uh I still love you
56:36
buddy um Ben is a chaos Gremlin and he is the most Perfect Chaos Gremlin ever
56:44
uh and I watched your La latest episode of uh Commander at home Bud uh when you were joining them as a guest inspired
56:50
truly Inspire trolling I adore you um but it was just fun it was just it was
56:56
he wasn't just like some celebrity he wasn't just a Game Dev he was just hanging out having a good time with us
57:02
and we were just talking about the most random of things and those are the best interviews for me like I've I've
57:07
interviewed a lot of people on podcast over the years and the ones that are always the most fun are the ones that
57:13
immediately lose their structure right where it just kind of goes wherever um
57:18
like I remember interviewing ciss Jones years ago and we were talking about firewatch cuz firewatch was the big
57:24
thing and like immediately I don't know how we started going on tangents but we were like 10 minutes talking about
57:29
firewatch and how good she was as Delilah and then an hour goes by and we're talking about like tabletop
57:35
roleplaying games and voice acting and you know all sorts of random stuff and those are the most fun for me so having
57:42
been on and being able to talk with them and being able to talk with them about just random stuff was a lot of fun and I
57:48
really enjoyed it so that was my probably my favorite moment this past year which hard to believe it was this
57:54
past year oh gosh what about you Liz do you have a favorite moment um I I will give I will
58:00
give two moments that I thought have been really fun over the past year first I enjoy every time we have coryon and he
58:07
brings up Heroes of the Storm because Heroes of the Storm is OB stensby in
58:12
maintenance mode but blizzard has been rolling out a monthly patch for it and every patch Corey comes to with the
58:20
absolute enthusiasm of someone who's ready to get going into a new season of
58:26
exciting content which blizzard is not providing every time he comes on and
58:32
talks about what's going on and Heroes of the Storm he just brings the hype and the energy and uh it's it's a little bit
58:40
of of copium there I think that he is trying trying to believe that this game
58:45
will come back I I hope it does but it seems like right now we just get a patch a month and every time we bring Cory on
58:52
we get to have that excitement I also really enjoyed uh the lore watch I was
58:58
on about the Diablo 4 expansion because a lot of fun yeah I came into that show
59:04
with a very different opinion on the expansion than Matt and Joe had and
59:09
sometimes it's easy to start arguments or have these you know just just disagreements where you can't see the
59:15
other side but it was we had a really interesting discussion because I did not enjoy the expansion that much I thought
59:21
the story kind of fell flat it was a little weak it did have one really amazing cinematic at the end but I I I
59:29
wanted a little more and we just had we had a great discussion about it it's fun when you can come in and have really
59:35
different opinions but discuss them and really really go through them and
59:40
everyone sees everyone else's side it's really good yeah I like those moments Phil you've joined us for a few do you
59:47
have a podcast moment I don't know if I have one I'm just always you know I'm just always thrilled to be here um
59:54
I um no like I I I can't really pick out one favorite I don't think unfortunately
