It's spooky season here on Tavern Watch, so we're playing something appropriately spooky -- Shadowdark! But a spooky old-school-esque system isn't enough on its own, so we're diving back into one of the most classic horror tabletop game modules of all time -- the original I6: Ravenloft for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1E. When new spooky rules meet old haunts, will our heroes survive the night?
In this case, our intrepid heroes, outsiders to the realm of Barovia investigating some disturbing rumors surrounding the Burgomaster's daughter, Ireena, have found themselves invited to a dinner with the infamous ruler of the region, Count Strahd von Zarovich. Will they feast... or be feasted upon? Our brave adventurers include:
— Liz as Serl Sparrow (Halfling Wizard), whose destiny is it to enter Castle Ravenloft and emerge victorious.
— Nick as Ninir (Elf Thief), whose destiny is... to steal as much loot from the infamously rich Count as he possibly can.
— Chris as Faran (Elf Priest), a brave and doughty religious elf who will face the darkness or die trying.
This is the first in a three-part game of Shadowdark! Look for new episodes every Monday.
This game was played in Shadowdark, an Ennie-Award-winning tabletop RPG that marries the familiarity of D&D with the stripped-down, rulings-not-rules sensibility of older versions of the same game, yielding something that's fast, fun, and easy to play. Shadowdark places an emphasis on being easy to understand and easy to run, making it a great game to pick up and play -- even if it's your first tabletop game! If you're interested in picking up your own copy of Shadowdark, you can grab it at The Arcane Library. If you want to check out our adventure in Ravenloft for yourself, you can pick up I6: Ravenloft from the DM's Guild. (We're also using Venatus Maps' Castle Ravenloft Battle Maps to play in these episodes.)

Hello and welcome. Welcome back to an extremely spooky edition of Tavern Watch
0:33
Plays. Uh, I debated doing a voice for that, but I'm not going to. I am your GM
0:38
today, Phil, and I will be guiding our little crew of brave adventurers through
0:44
uh a very old game in a very new game. We'll be running the original version of
0:49
Castle Ravenloft from the 80s using Shadow Dark, a uh a lightweight system
0:55
from a year or two ago. uh very award-winning that blends uh old old school sensibilities with modern
1:00
mechanics to make it fast and easy to run. Uh let's find out who we're playing with today. We'll start with Liz.
1:09
Hello, I am Elizabeth Harper and I am playing Sirill Sparrow, a halfling
1:14
wizard who hiddens her destiny to enter this castle and emerge victorious.
1:20
Yes, absolutely. has she she has 13 hit points. So, I assume she's going to be
1:26
the first one down probably. Uh that that's why you want to hide behind the the other people like uh
1:32
let's see who looks tough here. Let's go with Chris. Hey, I am Chris Chzn. Uh I am playing
1:39
Feron uh the elf priest. Ironically,
1:44
elf priest who's actually a barbarian somehow. Um, I am going to bring up
1:51
before we start that not only have I never played Castle Dravenoff, I've never played a priest. Well, here you
1:57
go. Uh, this this might be right in your wheelhouse given that we've seen you play a paladin lot in World of Warcraft.
2:02
Priests and uh, Shattered Dark kind of go on that line between like cleric and paladin. So, you might be right at home.
2:09
Uh, but we've got one other person, our little merry band today. Uh, Nick, say hi.
2:15
Hi, I am Nick Marino and I am playing Nineer, an elf thief who is also a
2:23
jeweler. So, of course, the one thing that I'd love to do is go into
2:29
fancy schmancy places and see what they got going on inside. Um,
2:35
also interestingly enough, as an elf, apparently I worship a deity named
2:41
Ramlot, which is an orc based god.
2:47
Yeah, you're just a rule. You're just a you're just a barrel of contradictions here. Oh, yeah.
2:53
Okay. So, uh, as mentioned, uh, this is kind of an abbreviated version of Castle
2:59
Ravenloft. D and D 5e players will probably be familiar with Ravenloft from uh from Curse of Strod most notably, but
3:07
uh Ravenloft has been uh with uh D with the D and D franchise since the 80s uh
3:12
when the Hickman's first wrote the module I6 Ravenloft. Uh that one
3:17
encompasses the whole thing where you you know you are summoned to the uh extremely uh spooky and dreary uh
3:24
country of Bovia to investigate uh the uh the various affairs around the Burggo
3:31
Master's daughter arena or excuse me not daughter gez wow uh fiance arena um and
3:37
it gradually comes to light that this uh this country uh appears to be ruled from the castle Ravenloft by a vampire lord
3:44
Strad Vanzarovich Uh since we like to get to the spooky part here, we are skipping straight to
3:50
the action and we will be uh we our our heroes have taken a a carriage uh
3:56
through through a rainy stormy night up the the treacherous path to uh Castle Ravenloft, clutching in their hands an
4:03
invitation to dinner uh delivered mysteriously overnight uh by the count
4:08
himself. Uh it is nighttime. It is dark and you uh will be standing in the
4:14
entryway of Castle Ravenloft as we start. Uh now I do want to mention as I
4:20
stated at the top, we are playing this in Shadow Dark. Shadow Dark is a system which uh as I said the the actual play
4:28
uh is very uh familiar if you've played Dn D uh fifth edition at any time in the
4:34
last decade. Uh you know D20 plus a number to do skill checks. you've got the same six stats. Um, you have a lot
4:41
fewer things down on your character sheet, which hopefully might lead you to uh a little less indecision stare at
4:46
your character sheet and more time going, "What would my character do in this situation?" Uh, but also it means that you've got nice low hit point
4:53
numbers. So, we this may be one of the few Tavern Watch plays where we have a character die. Luckily, we have backups.
4:59
Uh, couple other things about Shadow Dark that make it unique. One, light is very important. None of the ancestorries
5:05
in this game can see in the dark. Luckily, we have a few people with torches and or light spells, so uh that
5:12
should be okay. But it also runs on a real life timer. So when an hour has passed for us in the real world, an hour
5:18
will have passed and your light spell will go out. So uh keep track of your torches and lights players.
5:24
And the other one is that the entire game is played in initiative order, not just combat to keep things moving. So
5:30
we're going to kick things off right off the bat with a dice roll. I'll like everyone to roll a d20 and add your uh
5:38
uh add your dexterity modifier to it and we will see who goes first. Okay. Well, it's certainly not me.
5:45
I rolled a three. Are you sure it's not you? Oh. Oh. Oh god. Am I going to be the
5:51
first person? Oh god. Oh god. You might be because I rolled a three, but I have a
5:58
negative one deck, so I actually rolled a two. Okay, so we got a three and a two. Nick, what do you got?
6:03
11 + three, so I 14. Okay. Uh, let me just make sure it's not going to start with me. There's no
6:10
monsters around. So, this shouldn't Yeah, I'm not I rolled a four. So, we got two, three, four, and 14. So, play
6:16
will go in the order, Nick, and then me if there's anything for me to do. And then Chris and then Liz. So, as I said,
6:21
you are hanging, you are standing in the entryway of Castle Raven Loft. Behind you, the ornate massive doors hang open.
6:28
Uh, what's up, Liz? Am I not before Chris? Because he has a negative dexterity.
6:34
Uh you could, but but to keep it to keep it simple, we just kind of see who wins and then we go like in if we were
6:39
sitting at a table, it would be like clockwise order. But uh in this case, I'm just going in Discord. So if you want to go uh if you want to go before
6:46
if you want to go before Chris, find a way to make your name alphabetically go before Chris in Discord. Oh.
6:52
Uh so you're standing in Yep. You're standing in this little entryway 20 ft into the castle. Um here this is one of
6:58
the few areas that is lit. There are torches in here uh casting uh flickering light into the entryway. Uh there is a
7:06
second set of doors to your east which to the east which have been closed. Uh but uh suddenly they are blown open and
7:13
you can hear in the distance a stab of organ music as if someone were madly playing at somewhere somewhere nearby.
7:20
Um, you can see into a uh entry hallway where there are four statues of dragons
7:26
glaring down at you. Uh, let's start with Nick. What do you do?
7:32
Um, I just want to before I take a step forward, I just want to see if I can
7:40
hear beyond the organ if there's like anyone coming to greet us or anyone
7:46
nearby or if we're just truly alone in this opening area right now. Okay. Um, yeah, I would say go ahead and
7:53
give me a uh wisdom check. Just roll d20, add your wisdom modifier, and tell me what you get. That's a 17 total.
7:59
Okay. Uh you would probably hear it if anyone was coming, but as far as you can tell, maybe just like peeking your head
8:05
into the entry hallway, kind of glancing north and south. Um you don't really see
8:10
anything. You see a lot of um statuary. Um there's the four red dragon statues
8:16
directly in the entry foyer that I told you about. And then to the south, uh or not to the south, excuse me, um to the
8:24
north, I am very good with directions. Um you have the uh um like actually kind
8:31
of all around the upper levels of the room like the this is a very tall room. It kind of fades into shadows up at the
8:36
top. You can see perched along the upper walls though uh statues of gargoyles all along this uh this entry foyer and the
8:44
uh the area to the south. Um there is a large set of stairs that go up to the
8:49
north. Um you can tell that the organ music seems to be coming from the south.
8:55
Okay. Um, to round out, I'd like to just walk further into the uh open foyer. So,
9:02
I'm like smack in the middle of either going up the stairs or down the hallway. Okay, go right ahead then.
9:10
Uh, ding, ding, ding. You did it. Uh, I don't have anything that I wish to do right now.
9:15
So, Chris, you're up. I think I'm going to move in right next to to where uh Ner
9:24
did. Uh, and then I'm going to take a moment to look around and actually
9:29
probably just draw my sword so that I'm ready. What are you expecting? Some kind of a
9:34
threat? You've been invited to uh to dinner with the count? Expecting something to happen.
9:41
Always. Fair enough. Okay. Uh, Liz, what's up? Um, I'm going to follow everyone in. Uh,
9:50
I would like to cast detect magic and see if there's anything terrible and
9:56
magical in here that I should be concerned about. Oh, okay. All right. So, uh, one nice
10:02
thing about wizards in this, rather than the old school design of you have one spell and you're done for the day, is
10:08
you need to make a spellcasting roll. That is a d20 plus your intelligence modifier. Uh, and then you need to make
10:15
a the DC is 10 plus the spells tier, which I think is one for detect magic.
10:20
Uh, yeah, I I got a 10. So, uh, it's a DC 11. I am rolling hot. Yep. I'm uh
10:29
going great. Unfortunately, the spell fizzles. It does not go uh it does not go uh does
10:35
not go ary. We don't get to roll on the fun wizard mishap table. Um, but uh you
10:41
you cannot cast detect magic now until you take a long rest. So Oh, great. That was that that was fun.
10:48
Very good. Very good wizarding. All right. Magic in here is so powerful it has
10:53
suppressed my ability to detect it. As the wizard walks in the room and
10:59
starts lying to the elves. Uh, well, I I think she I think she
11:05
genuinely believes this. Yeah. Now that you are all in here, uh, the rest of you can hear that, yeah, the organ music is very clearly coming from
11:12
the south. Um, Nick, you're up next.
11:17
I'm going to just give Faren a quick side eye and just ask him if he sees
11:23
anything because I'm looking around this foyer and we're by ourselves. What's
11:28
going on? I see nothing. But you would think if we were invited to a place like this,
11:35
someone would have greeted us at the door. Yeah, fair enough. I This count appears not to have very countly manners. Uh I
11:43
guess are you all opposed to going towards the
11:48
sound of music. Maybe we've got some dinner. Maybe it's our dinner entertainment. Perhaps when we get there, you can hold
11:55
him accountable. Okay. The spookiest thing about the
12:01
spooky game is that pun. Oh, man. Uh, count on it.
12:08
Oh, here we go. All right. Uh, so Nick, are you moving? Are you moving further
12:14
south? Is that what I'm hearing? Yes, I'll be moving towards the uh Sound of Music. Um, while I'm walking, can I
12:21
notice or I want to observe closely the statues I'm going to walk by, see if there's anything interesting about them,
12:28
about their make. Sure. Uh so you're walking so the hallway you're walking south through uh
12:33
kind of looks like the uh spot for uh it it would be the guest hall. There are places for you to uh like if you were if
12:40
you had a cloak or a nice coat, there would be a place to hang it. Uh this this area right now is still torch lit.
12:47
Um to the uh further to the east you can see that there is a uh another hallway
12:54
that kind of uh runs into a uh runs into a set of uh stairs and then uh it's it's
13:01
rather dark down that way. Um the area you're walking the uh the statues are as
13:08
I said so the ones in the foyer there are gargoyles posted high up. Um there are red dragons uh kind of four of them
13:16
around you. uh also uh like flames in their mouths to kind of illuminate the
13:21
entryway. Very fancy. Um and at the south end of this of the guest hallway, there is a uh there is a uh across from
13:29
the double doors that judging by the sound lead to wherever this organ is being played. Uh there is a set of oiled
13:36
and glistening plate armor standing on a little uh like a little uh deis a little
13:43
display area. I don't know what you want like in a shallow in a shallow al cove. Uh shadows falling across it.
13:49
Um where you said that there are cloaks. Are there any is there anything hanging there now or where there would be?
13:56
Uh nope. You are the only guests tonight at Castle Ravenloft. Okay. And then the I guess I don't
14:03
really really know how dark it looks closer to the doors.
14:10
So, uh right now everything is lit. We'll see if it stays that way. Okay, I'll uh walk cautiously towards the door.
14:18
Okay, and get ready to knock. Okay. Uh All right, next up is me. Uh
14:26
the organ music uh changes tunes, taking on a more somber but still grand uh
14:31
note. Uh I think like an old sad ballad from the old country. Uh Chris, you're
14:37
up next. Well, I think I think Faren is going to follow pretty much behind an
14:43
ear at this point. Just making sure that the group doesn't get too far apart. Um,
14:50
in case things go straight to crap. Okay. Uh, no crap happening so far. This
14:55
is a peaceful dinner invitation. Uh, Liz, I will follow along. Um uh I don't
15:05
really think I want to do anything in particular. Just keeping my eyes open for anything
15:12
suspicious, but everything is suspicious. Going to see who wants to touch the uh
15:17
the room. Who wants to touch the door first? I cast detect magic.
15:23
You fail. Oh, nope. Not anymore. You don't. Luckily, you have what, like four other spells
15:29
cuz you're fifth level. You're fine. Uh yeah. Yeah, they're very useful.
15:35
[Laughter] Uh, an aside to people listening, uh, the characters that everyone is using
15:42
have been randomly generated, uh, using an official tool for Shadow Dark, shadowd darklings.net.
15:48
Um, I I confess I did a little work to make some of these characters more
15:53
useful than they were, but uh, in the end of at the end of the day, they're random. Uh, Nick, your turn. Yeah, this
16:01
is why uh Ner worshiping an orc god is so funny. Uh all right. Um I'm going to
16:09
look at both my companions uh before I firmly but not threateningly try to
16:17
knock on the door. All right. Uh you reach to knock on the double doors and they swing open
16:23
revealing a grand dining room. is a magnificently uh decorated square room lit by three
16:30
gigantic crystal chandeliers. Uh the the walls are kind of a dull white marble
16:36
with gigantic pillars supporting them. In the center, a long heavy table. It's covered with a fine white cloth and uh
16:44
pretty much any kind of food you could want. Roasted animals and savory sauces, roots and herbs, fruits, vegetables,
16:51
stews, you name it. The count appears to have set it out for dinner. Uh at each place there's a crystal goblet filled
16:57
with an amber liquid. And at the center of the far west wall between floor between floor to ceiling length mirrors
17:04
stands a massive pipe organ. Uh now that you've opened the door and you're not uh
17:10
limited by uh you know the by distance from it. It is uh let's say extremely
17:17
loud. Um, and there is a man standing there uh playing the uh uh playing the
17:25
organ. Well, not not really standing per se. Uh, sitting playing the pipe organ.
17:31
Uh, facing away from you all. Uh, giving it his full attention. Really going to town on the pipe organ. Um,
17:37
and when the door swings open, uh, this caped figure turns around and slowly
17:43
turns to face you and, uh, welcomes you to, uh, to his castle and invites you.
17:50
Please come sit down, join me for dinner. Still my turn or or your turn?
17:55
Uh, since all you do is open the door, go ahead and go ahead and take a do do your thing.
18:01
Okay. Um, I'll just walk in and bow politely and say,
18:09
"We've been summoned by uh the count of the castle for dinner. Can I may I
18:14
presume you're him?" All righty. Uh, he bows and he says, "That is me, Strad Vadzarovich, at your
18:20
service. Uh it is a pleasure to finally meet the uh the uh fine people I've
18:26
heard have been uh let's say investigating some troubling rumors here in Bovia. Uh please come in, sit down,
18:33
make yourselves comfortable, let's chat. Uh next up is Chris. Yeah. Um, so so Faren uh kind of comes
18:43
up comes through the door and he gives like a nod to Strad like a a you know
18:50
the the the professional like the play I recognize you. Yeah.
18:56
Um and while he moves over and begins to pull back a seat uh he does not sheet
19:03
the sword. He leans it up against the table as he sits down. Yeah. Strad uh smiles as he sees your uh
19:10
you carrying a weapon. He says you can never be too careful at night in this country. Uh dangerous things roam our
19:15
countryside. Uh it seems that that is like it in many places.
19:20
Uh Liz, your turn. Wow, this isn't ominous at all. My little wizard is starting to question
19:27
her life choices. No, she's destined to do this. She is destined to emerge victorious. Uh yes, I
19:34
will. Where's the appropriate distance to sit from a scary vampire?
19:44
Just looking all over. Sorry.
19:52
Just watching watching the token for Sir Sparrow bounce all over the room. How close should I sit to the scary vampire?
19:59
Okay, I'll go, you know, a little more than halfway down the table. That seems fine. Close, but not. Yeah, I'm sure it's
20:05
fine. And I will give him a a short bow. Um, we do appreciate the
20:13
invitation. It would be excellent if we could perhaps settle some of these
20:18
troubling rumors. Yep. Uh, I will say he grins and the
20:23
light kind of glints off of his teeth and he says, "That's exactly what I'm hoping to accomplish." Uh, Nick, your
20:29
turn. What are the What's the silverware made out of? Uh the silverware is made out of actual
20:34
silver. Are you going to try to steal Straw Scullery?
20:40
No. Uh how many of the I'm assuming it's a
20:46
serve your own self situation. Uh it yeah the uh the table is set for uh 5,
20:52
but it is a uh a very like it it's it's kind of a it's like a giant family
20:58
dinner basically. Got it. Um I'll I'm going to move closer to the other side of Sorl and sit down
21:06
and reaffirm to the count. We we are so
21:13
humbled by your invitation. Please tell us what's on what's been on your mind about the goings on in Bovia.
21:20
All right. So, the count uh the count will Is anybody eating by the way or drinking? I should ask.
21:26
I've I've only sat down so far. Okay. I mean, if you if if you want to eat, eating is eating is a free action.
21:33
Eating is a free action. Okay. So, so Strod uh kind of descends
21:38
from the seat where he's been playing the pipe organ and he takes his seat at the head of the table and picks up a glass of wine and kind of swirls it
21:45
around and he says, "So, I've heard that the three of you have been asking a lot
21:51
of troubling questions about the fate of the Burger Monsters fiance Arena.
21:57
Interesting girl." Uh however uh I would I would I would
22:03
venture that as outsiders here uh the matters of Bovian uh citizens are not
22:11
really of concern to yourselves. So here is what I propose to you. And he kind of leans forward and he says, "One of you
22:17
has an artifact on you, something I have been searching for for years. Uh, and if
22:24
you leave it in my possession, I will allow you to leave Bovia and my castle with your lives. If you do not, then uh
22:32
we'll have to settle things another way." And he takes a sip of his wine and then sets it down on the table and then waits to see what you will make of his
22:38
offer. Uh, Chris. Oh, my dear counted. Uh, let me let me lower my the octave of
22:45
my voice here. Uh, my dear count, it perhaps I am misunderstanding, but it
22:51
sounds to me like you're threatening us, kind of a threat. Uh, a promise rather.
23:02
I see. Well then, and Fon just like leans forward and and picks up a piece
23:08
of of I guess deer sitting on the the tray in front of him and kind of drops
23:13
it onto his plate and pokes at it with a finger. I'm not sure I like the thought
23:19
of that. He said, "Well, uh, feel free to eat. Don't don't waste it. At least I
23:25
wouldn't want you to die with empty stomachs." Uh, Liz, your turn. No, I
23:30
don't want it to be my turn.
23:36
See, if we were playing D and D, I could just I'm the tiny wizard. I would sit behind everyone and wait for other
23:42
people to do things. No. Um, they got to do stuff. I know.
23:49
I do not care for your tone count. And I don't think I want to take any hostile
23:56
action. That sounds We're all being polite here. Uh,
24:02
throw a silver knife. Throw a silver knife.
24:07
I uh Well, I have a plus zero deck, so I wouldn't be terrible at it.
24:14
That's true. And there are a number of sharp silver knives on the table made of real silver.
24:22
Interesting. Um, but I for now I will continue playing
24:27
polite and I will pick up some things on my plate and keep a careful grasp on my
24:32
silverware. I'll just kind of nod at you and he says, "Well, uh, I also don't appreciate people insinuating things about me that
24:40
aren't necessarily true. Believe me, there are plenty of things about me that are perfectly true."
24:45
Uh, Nick, your turn. Um, well, I'm I'm going to take a look around at some of
24:51
the food and just quip. I noticed there aren't any steaks being served, but
24:59
uh my dear count, I have to ask,
25:04
is what is the fiance to you for you to immediately threaten violence on your
25:11
guests? I didn't realize this was a custom in Bovia. um sort of half snarky but half trying
25:18
to like make light of the situation non-threateningly like maybe we can
25:24
resolve this without violence. Uh he kind of he kind of shakes his
25:29
head. He said she is she is the reincarnation of my beloved and although
25:35
the burger master has not realized it yet, she is still betrothed to me. Death is no obstacle here in Bovia. and he
25:42
stands up and he says,"I I I see that you all are interested in talking but not necessarily interested in coming to
25:49
a resolution. So here's what I will say. Uh you have the next 2 hours to explore
25:56
my castle on your own. Make yourselves at home. Uh see the wonders of Castle Ravenloft and after that I will find you
26:03
and we will settle matters our way." And with that, there is a a great wind that
26:10
suddenly whistles through the room. Uh, and the room goes completely dark. Uh,
26:15
the chandeliers go out. The count himself completely vanishes. Um, the
26:21
food still smells. It's It's real food. It's not illusionary. Um, so it's still there. Um, you also hear in the distance
26:28
uh the sound of a number of very heavy doors slamming shut. uh and the port
26:33
cullis and drawbridge that you passed through to get her to begin with. Uh clanging shut and pulling themselves up
26:40
respectively. Uh the count himself nowhere to be seen. Uh it is now dark. What would you like
26:46
to do next? Uh Chris. So the moment that it goes dark, uh Faren reaches over and
26:52
grabs the hilt of his sword. uh with his free hand, he touches his holy symbol
26:58
and he cast uh light on his blade. Okay, go ahead and give me a
27:04
spellcasting roll. Uh d20 plus wisdom since you are a priest and you're looking for I believe light is also a
27:10
tier one. So you're looking for an 11 or higher. Yeah, it looks like with my level and
27:15
being an elf, it's d20 plus five already. um for me. So, uh I need to
27:21
beat a 11 and I rolled a 14. So, 19.
27:27
Perfect. Yep. You uh cast a light spell with no difficulty. Your uh your sword is now glowing for the next hour.
27:34
So, I I I hold it up so that we can see each other. Um and I'm starting a timer
27:39
on my phone. All righty. Sounds good. Uh, Liz, I will stand carefully and uh I'm going
27:47
to do the same thing as Faren and cast a light spell on my
27:53
staff, which I have which I am now clutching. Okay, go ahead and make a spellcasting
27:59
roll. That's uh 14 on the dice, so I should be good on that one.
28:05
Yep. Better at light than detect magic. So, uh that'll go on your staff. Uh, we'll just have Chris's timer reply for
28:11
both of those. They'll run out at the same time. So nice. Switch dice, you know, just in
28:16
case. Just switch to the good one. Yeah. Uh, okay. Uh, Nick, uh, I'm going to look at both Fen and
28:25
Sorl and just sort of shake my head. Well, some of us can't do magic. And
28:30
pull a torch out of my pack and try and light it there. Okay, that's fine. You can light a
28:36
torch. There's nothing stopping you. And you have you have light which makes it not uh not difficult. So yeah, all three
28:42
pocket two of the silver knives. All righty. Uh note those in your inventory. Oh yeah. Well, I should say that this
28:50
dinner was enlightening. Oh my god. You're just going to do this
28:55
the whole time, aren't you? You know it. Perfect. Uh frankly, frankly, I think it's your
29:01
sword that is enlightening. I think that is how the light spell works. Uh, I am
29:06
but a humble wizard. Speaking of enlightening, Fen, enlighten us with what you're doing next.
29:12
Well, I suppose it sounds like we're not going to get out of here. So, we should
29:17
probably determine where we're going next. Yep. As a note, the uh places you know
29:22
you can go just based on what little you've seen. You know that there are uh stairs directly across from the entryway
29:29
into the dining room, you can actually see them from where you're at because those double doors are still open. Uh they descend down into I think they go
29:35
both up and down. Yeah, they go both up and down uh into darkness either way. Um
29:41
there is the gigantic set of stairs at the north end of the foyer. Um and there's another set of double doors off
29:47
the foyer that you have not tried yet. Okay. Um so far um looking at the other
29:54
two is like so we know that there's a couple different directions we can go.
30:00
Um, should we go do do you have a preference as to what direction we go?
30:06
Yeah. Away from here. This is uh I'm going to look at uh Stroll and
30:14
Farah like with a little bit of fear trying to keep it together. But he we
30:21
have something that he wants. I don't know why he thinks we have what he wants. Or do I?
30:28
Uh you do not. you you you know that Strod is looking for
30:34
something. Uh so a few days before your trip to Castle Ravenloft, you all had
30:40
your fortunes told um by one Madame Ava. And the uh the fifth card she pulled for
30:45
you stated that uh one of you carried a weapon that is stronger than any other against the evil in this land. And I'm
30:52
sure you were all slightly confused as most of you have fairly ordinary arms and armor outside of the magic staff
30:57
that Sorl created for themselves. Um, but that whatever that weapon is, it had
31:03
one part missing and it is somewhere in his layer. Um, but you know, as far as
31:09
you all know, you have perfectly ordinary arms and armor. So, you're not really sure what uh either Madame Avis
31:15
cards or Strod think you have. I'm here. Go ahead.
31:22
We've come here to find a killer and we must not leave until our job is done. All righty. Uh,
31:27
okay. [Laughter] It's like this this could just be Phil
31:34
runs a game of Ravenloft and we all walk into the castle and immediately go actually no.
31:39
Actually, no. I don't think I would like to go to Castle Raven off. Well, podcast over. Good job, everybody.
31:45
We RSVP back to Strod with a no. No,
31:52
sorry. We'll go back to the town. They were friendly there if weird. Yeah, I believe threatened to kill us
31:58
immediately. It's not immediate. It takes a while. The bellmonts you're looking for were in
32:04
the other castle. All righty. Nick, what are you doing?
32:09
Uh, I guess I'm just going to walk back
32:14
over to the to the um doors and just
32:20
peek my head out into the hallway and just take a look at how everything in looks
32:27
now from the main foyer down towards the hallway with this by the uh suit of
32:32
armor. Yep. Uh the most immediate change you notice is that it wasn't just the dining room. It appears that all of the pre uh
32:39
lit lights in the castle have gone out. Uh the dragon statues in the foyer no longer have the guttering uh red uh
32:47
flames in their mouths. Uh there are no longer any torches weekly, you know, lit
32:53
in the guest hallway that you're in. Everything appears to have gone out all at once. Uh it it is it is oppressively
33:01
dark out here apart from the torch uh the three lights that you and your friends are carrying. Uh, would you like
33:07
to do anything else or shall we move on to Chris? Um, move on to Chris.
33:12
All righty, Chris, you're up. Um, so Faren is going to actually instead of going out of the room, um, he
33:18
stands from where he was sitting, leaving the food on the table. Uh, and he's going to wander over and using the
33:24
light of his sword, uh, take a look at the organ. Um, just to see if there's anything that was perhaps left behind or
33:30
if there's anything weird about it. I mean, outside of the fact that it's a giant organ. It is a giant organ. Uh, go
33:36
ahead and give me an intelligence check. 15.
33:41
15. Uh, 15 is cool. What you notice, uh, is that, so you look down at the you
33:47
look at the pipe organ and it is obviously a wellused pipe organ. It appears that the count actually does
33:53
play this in his uh, you know, in his in his free time uh, to entertain other
33:58
dinner guests perhaps. Uh, but what you notice is that one of the ivory keys on
34:04
the far right of the keyboard is completely pristine. It has seemingly
34:09
never been played. I push it. You push it. Uh, you push it and the
34:15
pipe organ with a heavy groan and you're able to get out of the way in time. Uh, slides forward and then a little bit to
34:22
the side revealing a hidden doorway uh, behind it. Ah, in intriguing.
34:29
Yep. So, there is a hallway behind the pipe organ. You can look into it. Um,
34:35
you recognize it as uh I mean you well, I guess you've seen it from the outside.
34:40
Um, it's an arched corridor leading to the south. You can see like uh archers slits in the north and west walls,
34:47
although they've been bricked up at this time. Um, and you notice in the uh
34:54
in the middle of the room that you're facing, like immediately behind the pipe organ, um, there's a tall dark figure in
35:00
a floating cape floating in the middle of the room. Well, that's not good. And there are a number of mirrors on all
35:05
the walls around. So, what? So, you have enough time to say that's
35:12
not good. Uh, would you like to move any further into the into the creepy hallway? Um, if not, it is Liz's turn.
35:19
No. Nope. Right here. Not going in by myself, that's for sure.
35:24
All right, Liz, it's Sorl's turn. Okay, I would like to cast Magic
35:34
Missiles. Okay. Well, the good news for that is magic missile is always cast with
35:41
advantage. Um, so I'm assuming you're attempting to magic missile the creepy floating figure.
35:46
I I would like to cast it though. The creepy floating figure is in the middle of a bunch of mirrors.
35:53
Yeah, there's like uh so that's another thing about the end of the uh about the
35:58
end where the pipe organ is is there are floor tolength floor to ceiling mirrors um all over that half of the dining room
36:06
like reflecting whoever is sitting at the pipe organ and then there are also several at various places on the walls
36:11
in the hallway behind the pipe organ. Do they reflect the figure here? Uh, they do in fact reflect the figure here.
36:18
Okay. H. So, mirrors are just a thing that are around this place. Yep.
36:25
Maybe we could have a conversation with it. Maybe it's a nice floating figure in
36:30
a cloak. Weren't you casting magic missile? Is that how wizards start conversations?
36:38
Yeah. Well, I'm just Yeah, I'm I'm getting up from the table. I am I see this figure.
36:44
I am casting magic missile. So I cast it with advantage. Uh
36:49
yep. Uh that's an 18 plus three.
36:54
Perfect. So go ahead and roll your damage. Oh, right. This does damage. That's the
36:59
whole point. That's the whole point of magic missile. Wow. One der. That does not seem like much damage, but we're going to go for
37:06
it. Uh I rolled a four. Yep. Uh so max damage. Nice. Uh
37:11
editorial comment. You will notice that damage numbers in general are a lot lower in Shadow Dark, but so are hit
37:17
points. Uh it's kind of true to the flat math of older versions of uh Dungeons and Dragons and other D20 light games.
37:24
That aside, uh so your magic missile streaks through the through the darkness past Faren's head, uh hits the floating
37:30
figure, um which oddly enough swings and spins, and Faren, you now notice that it
37:37
is suspended by black ropes that hang from the ceiling. And in fact, the magic missile collides with it hard enough
37:43
that the caped mannequin uh clatters to the ground uh and lies motionless in the
37:48
middle of the hallway. You have killed you have killed a mannequin. Congrats.
37:54
Uh is this is this just like a a a poorly constructed haunted house? I mean,
38:02
a tiny plus one XP pops up overhead. [Laughter]
38:07
Uh so uh well that seems like a waste of magic. Well, luckily you could do that as many
38:14
times as you want. Thanks nonvancancy and spellcasting. Uh I am going before I am going to pocket
38:21
one of the silver knives on the table before I leave it. Okay. I saw
38:27
uh saw Nick do it and I'm like it's smart. Not a bad idea. Uh you know that silver generally is
38:33
harmful to uh creatures of the night. So, I would say go ahead and I believe your inventory was full last I checked.
38:38
So, if you want to leave something out and put the silver knife in its place, feel free. Uh, yes, I will drop an oil flask. Not
38:45
an oil flask. I have I have an empty flask. Yeah, you Yeah, that makes sense.
38:50
I I want to keep the oil. It may have been an oil flask a few nights ago. Uh, Nick, what's up? What
38:56
are you doing next? Um, I'm gonna run over because the sight of Sorl casting
39:05
magic missile at something made me think something was wrong and seeing the now
39:10
obliterated mannequin uh on the ground.
39:15
Na is just holding back laughter as as much as he can
39:21
just keeps floating cloaked mannequins around.
39:27
Uh, actually, you can answer that question. I'm gonna say uh you can answer that question on your turn. It's Strad Vansorovich.
39:36
All right. Are you uh are you doing anything else? Yeah. Uh I am going to just take a very
39:44
slight step inside and scan the room, this room, and see if there's anything
39:49
out of place other than a bunch of freaking mirrors.
39:55
Yep. Uh just the uh just kind of the mirrors and the mannequins really uh which are weird but um the the circle
40:04
has obliterated the biggest threat. All right. Uh clarification. Are there multiple
40:10
mannequins or just this one? Just the one. Okay. Uh Faren, your turn. Uh so Faren's going to move into the
40:16
room and comes and stands over the mannequin. Uh kind of nudging it with
40:22
his foot. Uh uh the mannequin remains a mannequin. It has a nice black cloak on
40:28
it. I'm taking the cloak and I'm putting it on. All right. Uh you have a cool black
40:33
cloak. You immediately feel cooler. Beautiful. It does not appear to be magical, but it
40:39
is very cool. Hey, style points are still points. Yep, exactly. Uh Faren just kind of
40:47
looks down at the now I guess de decloaked mannequin and uh shakes his
40:54
head and then looks down this hallway uh to the south um and holds up his sword
40:59
and begins walking in that direction um just to about where the edge of the hall
41:06
is right here. People who are listening can't see the map we're looking at, but there's a there's a edge of a hallway um
41:13
where we cannot see in either direction. That's where Farah's going to stop. Yep. So, I'll go ahead and reveal that to you
41:19
now. So, uh to your west is uh what appears
41:25
to be an archer turret post. Uh you can see arrow slits that look out over the
41:30
courtyard that you came through to enter. Here it is. Uh it is
41:36
they they are open and not bricked up unlike the other ones. Um to the east is
41:41
a long hallway that runs uh there's doesn't look like it's been used in a while. It's dusty and there's cobwebs.
41:47
Um and there is a set of stairs at the end of it. Uh Nick or not Nick, excuse
41:55
me. Uh Liz, what's up? What's What do you want to do now?
42:00
That went well. I have vanquished I have vanquished our first foe in the castle.
42:05
Ravenloft, I will I will walk into this place.
42:11
Um I probably don't have the movement to get any further than Baron.
42:19
Hey, you can. Movement's kind of loosey goosey in this game. Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna be bold.
42:24
Boldness is all. I will step into the corridor, look left and right, and just
42:29
see if I can see anything anything of note, sweep my staff to both sides and
42:35
see if there's anything notable. Sure. Give me a uh give me a give me an
42:40
intelligence check. 17. Okay. Uh the hallway as it uh seems to
42:47
be fairly undisturbed. You sweep your staff and you mostly disturb dust and spiderw webs.
42:53
Normal size spiderw webs. I should clarify. Okay. Yes, that is important.
42:59
Not a welltraveled corridor. Where? What would this be used for that? No one has
43:04
been here. I sort of scuff the dust with my foot. Oh, yeah. You can uh actually, yeah,
43:10
with intelligence that of that high, you can probably kind of put this together based on the mirrors you've seen. Um,
43:16
the count that was present in the uh dining room was likely uh not a magical
43:21
illusion, an actual illusion of the man himself. Um, using the mannequin and a
43:26
number of mirrors to project it out into the dining room. Um, he he he was likely never there.
43:34
Trickery. Of course, trickery. What would you expect? Uh, Niner, you're
43:41
up. So, since everyone is uh ahead of me,
43:48
I'm going to follow right behind both of them still. I'm going to pick the
43:53
mannequin up, though, and set it like right here at the corner. Okay.
43:59
And then walk right behind. So, it's it's standing up again as much as it can or leaning against the wall.
44:05
Okay. and just going to take a quick
44:11
look around the corner and continue on. Okay. Uh you see the same thing I've
44:16
described to the east here. Empty empty empty turret to empty turret to the to the west, empty hallway to the east with
44:22
stairs at the end. Uh the stairs at the end do let me double check. Uh they go both up and down.
44:30
I am going to just as much as mo movement will allow me. Uh, at DM
44:36
discretion, I'll just carefully, cautiously walk down the hallway. Yeah, that's fine. I mean, you can
44:42
probably make it down to the stairs. That's fine. Like I said, loosey goosey.
44:47
Okay. Uh, so you give me just a second here to just see if there's anything
44:53
interesting about the stairs. There probably is. Uh, okay. So, the stairway
44:59
here is a it's a spiral staircase. Uh much like the hallway uh both up and
45:06
down, it appears to be uh fairly dusty. You don't see any real footprints in on
45:13
these stairs. And looking back, you don't actually see any on the floor other than your own.
45:19
Uh Chris, what's up? Uh so Faren having having you know met the the end of the
45:26
the walkway here uh is going to follow um behind Na um down towards the end of
45:35
the hall um and looking at the stairwell uh going up and down he kind of turns
45:41
slightly to Na and and goes dungeon or upwards.
45:50
I will remind you that uh some of the cards that uh Madame Ava dealt you kind kind of give you a uh maybe a possible
45:56
direction to travel. Um she mentioned that there is a symbol the a symbol of
46:01
great power uh in Castle Ravenloft uh in a a road that winds ever upwards. But
46:08
then she also mentioned that a good sign for you, a weapon of power and strength, uh lay with uh lay with a fallen prince
46:15
of old, which sounds uh maybe lower to the ground than up. So uh reasonable
46:22
reasonable reason to suspect that maybe whatever you're seeking could be in either direction. Uh Liz,
46:29
well, my compatriots have gone towards the stairway. Did Did we look in this room on the
46:36
other side? Uh, nobody really stopped to inspect the turret. No, but it did not seem unless
46:44
it's extremely well hidden and/or invisible. There doesn't seem to be much of anything in there. Uh, give me just
46:51
one second here. Where are my dice? I I I will step into the
46:57
uh I will step into the doorway here and just give it a glance just in case.
47:02
Okay. So, if I don't want anything to come out behind us.
47:07
Fair enough. Uh, okay. So, you you step through and you investigate the
47:14
you investigate that and while you're all look while you're all looking around uh in this hallway, there is a um
47:21
there's kind of a weird groaning sound and uh through the walls of the castle
47:27
itself, a pair of wraiths materialize. Uh, and they they float through the they
47:34
float through the walls of this weird turret and they kind of start floating uh towards you. Let me find my Where is
47:42
my ghost token? Uh, so you are now confronted with a pair of uh angry
47:49
spooky looking specters maybe. Uh, they certainly don't look happy. They appear to be uh in pain and perhaps angry at
47:55
the living. Uh, but it is not their turn. It is uh Nick's turn. Oh,
48:01
actually, did you want to take an action? Sorry. All you've done is look. Great. Great. I had to walk
48:08
had to turn the other way. In case they can't come up behind me.
48:15
It's true. They are very in front of you. I will cast magic missile.
48:21
I think there's going to be a lot of that. All right. Go ahead. Give me a spellcasting roll. 19. Oh, that's real good. Yeah. Give me your
48:27
damage. one one lonely damage. Did the good roll
48:34
did the good roll. You blew the heck out of that mannequin. Okay, so yeah, but uh your your magic missile magic does still work on the
48:40
incorporeal, luckily for you. Uh and your magic missile kind of sizzles and uh damages one of the specters which
48:46
howls in an unearly voice. Uh Ner, what's you're next?
48:52
Um, startled by all the commotion, I turn around and see Sorl blast one of
49:01
the rates as the other one stands there or floats rather
49:07
groaning. And uh I'm going to I'm going to tap Faren
49:14
and just hurriedly say not mannequins, not mannequins. and then grab or uh draw
49:20
my shortsord and run to try and help Sorl.
49:25
Okay. Uh you can make it there and if you want to try to attack one, go for it. Is your
49:31
shortsord magical? It is magical. All righty. Yeah. Get uh get up in range with one of them and take a swing. Uh
49:37
the one she Yeah, that's the one that I've got that she's shot with a magic missile. So,
49:43
okay. So that is be uh 15.
49:49
Uh that hits. Go ahead and roll your damage. Okay. That is five plus one for six.
49:56
Uh it'll actually just be to five. Damage numbers are flat in Shadow Dark. Oh, wait. It's a magic one. Sorry.
50:01
Yeah. Yeah. So it does take the six damage. Uh wow. it uh
50:06
it's it's kind of weird uh attacking what seems to be an incorporeal thing with your sword, but you're starting to get used to it in this really spooky
50:14
kind of country you found yourself in. Um and yeah, this your your sword bites into this this uh this wraith and it uh
50:22
it doesn't bleed, but it's it almost looks like you've dissipated it partly. Uh, as for it, uh, so the first Spectre
50:31
is going to attempt to It It honestly doesn't look like an attack. It actually just kind of reaches out and touches
50:36
Nine. Um, Nir does a 12 hit you.
50:43
Uh, is same as D and D where meets or has to beat AC at minimum. Uh, 12 does
50:49
not hit. AC does is 14. Okay. How about Okay, so an 18 does.
50:55
You know, it does. Okay. Yeah, I I do. I do know it does. Okay. So, you're going to take one point of damage and you are
51:02
also going to lose one point of strength as this the first spectral touch you kind of duck out of the way, but the
51:09
second one uh makes contact and the unearly chill of the wraith just uh drains away some of your strength. You
51:16
you feel yourself diminishing. Uh quick question uh for game. So
51:22
already my strength is at uh nine and corresponds minus one. So does that mean
51:27
it would be an eight or a minus two? It would drop to an eight. Okay.
51:32
And the other one is going to the other one, if I can pick the right uh thing, is going to attempt to do the same to
51:39
SURL. Uh I'm going to guess a two doesn't hit you even with your bad wizard AC.
51:46
Uh but does a I lost it. Does a 10 hit you? Oh, me. Me. They're attacking me.
51:54
You, the wizard. They don't like it. I My AC is 10. All right. Uh, you're going to take a
51:59
little bit of damage then. You're also going to take one damage and one point of one point of strength damage. So,
52:05
remove one from your strength and one from your health. Oh, one from my health and one for Okay.
52:13
And next up is Chris. Indeed. Uh so far having been uh
52:19
notified uh by Ner that that bad stuff is going on behind them. Um also heads
52:27
off down the hallway to make sure that you know his companions don't get murdered by these wraiths. Um I'm I'm
52:33
guessing I can get to hereish maybe a little bit further. Yeah, you can stand uh you can stand shoulder to well shoulder to hip with
52:40
Sorl. Okay. Um, so when when um Faren gets there, he he reaches up and he touches
52:49
um he actually like under his his I don't know, shirt armor, whatever he's
52:55
wearing, probably probably a shirt pulls out a holy symbol. Um uh it's it's it
53:03
looks kind of weird because it's it's the symbol of Madiraa. So, it's not like
53:08
he doesn't like pull out a cross or anything, but and he as he holds it up, he uh looks at the two wraiths and he's
53:16
just like, "Be gone." And he casts turn undead. All righty. Uh All right. Let's
53:22
see. A spell casting check then. 13. So, that actually hits. All right. Well, well, it breaks the DC anyway.
53:29
It does. Uh yeah, that's all you need. So, turn undead. Uh yeah, cuz it needed an 11 or higher. Uh rebuke undead
53:34
creatures, force them to flee. Must present holy symbol. have to make a charisma check versus your spellcasting check. It was a 13, right?
53:40
Yep. All right. So, believe these things have a fairly lousy charisma. They do. They
53:48
have a minus one to their charisma. Uh so, if I roll a three or less for either one of them, they are instantly
53:53
destroyed. Otherwise, they will flee from you for five rounds. Uh one of them
53:59
will be fleeing from you and one of them is outright destroyed. the one closest
54:05
to you rolled a one minus one for zero.
54:10
You instantly dissipate the closest wraith uh with holy energy. It uh it
54:16
almost looks like it's thanking you as it vanishes. Uh and then like in in a
54:22
flash it's gone. Uh with that it is Sorl's turn. I cast Magic Missile.
54:30
Go ahead. Slow. So excited. I'm so excited to be a wizard casting magic missile. I have not
54:37
cast magic missile. You did not. Even with advantage, you did not cast magic missile. Oh, advantage. I didn't roll advantage.
54:43
Okay. Yep. Okay. Advantage. Yes, advantage is much better. That's a 22.
54:50
There you go. Yeah, they I I'm guessing m your wizards always cast magic missile with advantage. I'm guessing so that you
54:56
know the odds of you running out of something to do uh are fairly low. That does it. Go ahead and give me some
55:02
damage. That one. Another one. I mean,
55:07
a one. You're ticking away at it. It's uh that that that it's looking a little more
55:13
dead by the moment. Uh the evil in this place is powerful. Uh Nick, what's up? You're next.
55:20
How can it look more dead? It's already dead. Um red dead.
55:26
So, this is like a a I'll leave it up at your discretion. If it's trying to retreat away, has it turned around and
55:34
or is it just backing away from me? Uh, it hasn't yet. On my turn, its only action will be to run away from uh run
55:41
as far away as it can from uh Faren. Okay, I'm going to just swing at it
55:46
again with sword. All right, take a swing. Okay, that is going to be 12.
55:52
That hits right on the money. Oh, thank god. Okay, that is going to be another five
55:58
plus one six. Nice. Uh that is exactly what you needed. Uh you uh just like the one
56:04
before it, it dissipates. Although not in not in a flash of holy energy like with Faren's turn. Um your sword kind of
56:12
shreds the unearly essence of this wraith and it vanishes from the mortal plane. And uh with that, you have saved
56:19
Sorl from wraiths. Good job everyone. We did it. to try to look at everybody
56:26
whole everyone. Okay? Yeah. Out of breath. This is Yeah. Two of you
56:32
not reassuring. Two of you are feeling a little weaker than you were, but uh you know, you're you're still good to carry on. I hope
56:37
I was already either or you're going to turn around and leave. I'm not sure.
56:45
All righty. Is there anything? Oh, wait. It's not my turn. Is it my No, it's not my turn. Not yet. But I mean, you can ask a
56:51
question. That's fine. No. Carry on. Okay, Chris. Uh, so, um,
56:59
uh, Faren puts his hand on your shoulder, um, and cast cure wounds.
57:05
All right, give me a, uh, give me a spellcasting roll. Uh, 23. Yeah, that'll do it. Uh, go ahead and,
57:11
uh, heal however many it says to heal. Uh, let's see here. D6. It's one plus
57:17
half your level rounded down. So, be d6 plus three. Ah, and I dropped the D6.
57:23
Got another one on the table. Uh, you're dropping. That's two. So, uh, five. Okay. So, uh, Nir is healed of his one
57:30
point of damage. The strength drain remains, though. Woohoo. Thank you, friends. Every every hit point counts. All right.
57:37
Uh, Liz, your turn. I do. I see anything else in this room.
57:43
Is it just It is ghosts. It is. It is. Uh, not even ghosts
57:48
anymore. Just the three of you. It's uh it's unnaturally quiet and still here. Um I would you can still hear the storm
57:55
raging outside. Um it was a it was already a heck of a thunderstorm on your way up to Ravenloft and it just appears
58:02
to have gotten more torrential uh while you were inside. Um but you don't detect
58:08
anything moving uh alive or undead inside this room.
58:13
And they left there's no body, no whis no wispy ghost cloth.
58:18
Nope. Just uh two evaporated ghosts. Those were not on we go apparently.
58:28
Be prepared for anything. All righty.
58:33
Uh I'll go down the hallway however far I can go towards the stairs where
58:38
everyone was at earlier. Yep. Seems like uh people were trying to decide between If you guys want to move
58:44
yourselves back up there, that's fine. It seemed like you were trying to decide between up or down before Sirill uh got attacked by ghosts.
58:50
Uh Nick, would you like to make a decision for the party because you're next? Yeah. Um I am going to actually what I
59:00
was going to do before the rates spawned was pull a coin out of my pocket. And
59:06
I'm just going to look and say one way up, one way down. I I love the sound of that. All right.
59:13
Let fate decide. Okay. Um I'm just going to call it heads and tails because that'll be the easiest
59:19
thing. So heads up, tails down, and I am
59:24
going to flip. And the flip is
59:29
heads. All righty. Uh but unfortunately, we're going to have to leave our listeners in suspense because that is the end of our
59:37
first episode. Uh when you get back, we'll be going uh to the next part of Castle Ravenloft. Uh thank you for
59:44
listening and uh we'll see you next time.
