Tavern Watch is back with another episode of Kids on Bikes, catching up with the kids of New Novemberwood as -- despite all the weird stuff happening to them lately, mostly related to astonishing feats of good luck -- they remember that they have a homework assignment due Monday. What starts as an ordinary trip to the retirement home to chat with residents about town history leads to tales that seem suspiciously connected to the present day... tales of derring-do, bad and good luck. (A-woohoo!)
Our friendly GM and stellar voice actor for this one is Joe Perez, and the Pineapple Honors class consists of:
* Liz Harper as Rhiandrea "Ree" Rains, an independent young Scout and local bookstore employee who doesn't like being told what to do by her parents -- or their ideas of how to run her life
* Trish, aka AwkwardishPanda, as Ginny Jacobson, an extremely precious girl and fish out of water who got advanced to her junior year six years early
* Matt Rossi as Jacob Jacobson, who's kind of a weird kid, but he looks out for his little sister and maybe believes in magic
* Phil Ulrich as Randall Fletcher, who could really be something if he applied himself, but he doesn't see why it's worth trying so hard all the time, man
This is the second of a three-part actual play series (the first part is here!) of Kids on Bikes, a rules-light and very accessible system for achieving the kind of feel you'd expect from media like The Goonies, Stand By Me, or E.T. -- any of those kind of 80s and 90s coming-of-age media where maybe something supernatural happens. Watch for new episodes every Monday! If you think this game is rad, you can pick up your own copy from Hunters Entertainment or Renegade Game Studios.

Hello everyone and welcome back to
0:36
Tavern Watch plays where this week we
0:39
are continuing our adventures in Kids on
0:41
Bikes, a game in which you are kids and
0:45
you have bikes. Uh this is not to uh you
0:49
know not you know it's not rocket
0:50
science. Uh but it is a game in the
0:53
style of your uh 1980s and 1990s movies
0:57
uh where groups of kids get into various
1:00
adventures, misadventures or
1:01
supernatural adventures uh as they make
1:04
their way through life. Uh I will be
1:07
your humble storyteller slashnarrator
1:09
slashdirector. Uh and joining me is a
1:12
wonderful group of miscreants. Uh first
1:14
up Liz
1:16
Hello, I am playing Re and uh I work at
1:22
the local bookstore. I
1:26
uh try to try to avoid my parents so I
1:29
do a lot of scouting stuff and I'm
1:32
currently, you know, sitting at the
1:34
bookstore checkout with my notebook open
1:37
trying lots of little doodles of
1:39
pineapples in terrible situations.
1:44
All right, next up we have Matt.
1:46
>> Hey everybody, I'm playing Jacob. Uh,
1:49
not Jake, not Jay.
1:52
Not Jacobius. For some reason, you
1:54
wanted to go Latin. Just Jacob. Uh, I
1:58
have a younger sister who I'm constantly
1:59
worried about. And also somewhat jealous
2:01
of. And I'm obsessed with weird things
2:04
my grandpa taught me.
2:07
>> All right. Next up, we have Phil.
2:11
>> Hi. Uh, I'm Phil and I'm playing
2:13
Randall. And Randall is a laid-back
2:15
slacker. He does not really get why
2:17
everybody's trying so hard. He's just
2:19
here to have a good time. Uh, currently,
2:22
uh, just kind of idly marveling at all
2:25
the weird stuff that's happening in
2:26
today. It's been a weird day.
2:29
>> It has, in fact, been a weird day. And
2:31
then last, but certainly not least, we
2:33
have Trish.
2:35
>> I am Trish. I am going to be playing
2:37
Jenny. I play Jacob's younger sister who
2:40
is
2:41
in a very high grade level for her age
2:43
and is very very very very smart and is
2:47
in situations that are a lot older than
2:49
she should be because she's in high
2:50
school as like a 10-year-old. Uh where
2:53
we last left off, our group of uh teens
2:57
and pre-teens uh had just finished a day
3:00
of school uh in which they went through
3:03
a little bit of a local history lesson
3:06
uh about some of the lore of the town uh
3:09
of which they have been living their
3:12
entire life uh known as
3:15
uh New Novemberwood. Uh they learned
3:18
about the founder uh uh Jeffrey
3:22
Pineapple uh who founded the town and uh
3:25
their wonderful history teacher uh gave
3:28
them a little bit of uh maybe what might
3:32
be some uh myth or lore of the town that
3:35
isn't quite uh in the normal history
3:38
books or not normally taught to try to
3:40
catch everybody's attention and
3:41
encourage them to go out and seek the
3:43
stories of the town. Uh on lunch they
3:46
had discovered several odd occurrences
3:49
such as the most popular girl in school
3:52
uh helping out the nerdiest kid in
3:55
school from getting picked on from
3:56
bullies and then wandering off together.
3:58
Uh the kid that was nobody talks about
4:01
but everybody knew he was his family was
4:03
very very poor. Uh showing up to school
4:06
on lunch with a uh 1987 Porsche 969. Uh
4:11
cuz that's a thing that that happened.
4:13
Uh and then just tons of little small
4:16
occurrences uh like that where uh people
4:19
were maybe getting something that they
4:21
they normally wouldn't have or uh acting
4:24
some way that they normally wouldn't. Uh
4:26
and then uh they found themselves
4:28
convening in the bookstore where re
4:30
works where they were investigating upon
4:33
themselves uh this little uh coin purse
4:37
that had been left behind after Jeffrey
4:39
was uh getting picked on by some
4:41
bullies. uh in which they then looked up
4:44
to see uh Tiffany and Jeffrey holding
4:47
hands, laughing and giggling heading
4:50
towards the movies and that's where we
4:52
will pick back up. Uh so yeah, you are
4:55
all kind of
4:58
taken aback by this. Uh I think you all
5:00
stopped doing what you're doing and
5:02
talking about as you just happened to
5:03
see this. Um and now I turn it back over
5:06
to you guys. What do you do?
5:09
Um, I'm gonna
5:11
like
5:14
like how far away are they? Like are
5:16
they already past the front of the
5:17
store? Are they already like 20 yards
5:19
down? Where are they?
5:20
>> We're picking up where they had just
5:22
passed the front of the store.
5:23
>> Okay.
5:25
Should I just give it back to him?
5:28
>> I mean, that would be what I was
5:29
thinking because it is kind of not
5:32
>> I don't know if it's his. Maybe it
5:33
isn't. I could just say, "Hey, is this
5:35
yours? Did you drop this?" I mean, yeah.
5:38
I mean, he knows me, too. I can run up
5:39
and talk to him if you don't want to
5:41
because I know you.
5:42
>> If you want to. Yeah, definitely.
5:44
>> You talk to him and I'll just be there.
5:48
>> Okay. Here. Give me, give me, give me,
5:49
give me. And I just start like grabbing
5:51
for the little pouch thing.
5:53
>> Yo. Yo, don't grab it too hard. It's not
5:55
in great shape.
5:57
>> Okay. And I just hold my hand out so you
5:59
can just pass it to me.
6:00
>> Yeah, I do that. And I like go bolting
6:05
to run out the store and realize I still
6:06
have an armful of books and I drop them
6:07
at the counter and be like be right back
6:09
to whoever is working the counter and I
6:10
bolt outside. Jeff,
6:14
>> break you have a a pile of books dropped
6:16
in front of you.
6:17
>> I am following [laughter]
6:20
>> I'm just kind of sauntering. I don't
6:21
have to like she can go full boore and I
6:23
can just take a step and catch up
6:25
because like I said, you know, she's
6:27
down there and I'm up here. So like
6:29
literally don't have to spend any energy
6:31
to keep up. I just sauna.
6:34
>> Yeah. Uh R Randall takes the copy of
6:36
Left Hand of Darkness that he has been
6:37
perusing and just surreptitiously puts
6:39
it in the middle of uh Jenny's pile of
6:42
books and then follows them out because
6:44
this seems like it's more interesting
6:45
than whatever's happening inside.
6:48
>> Okay. Uh yeah, Jenny, you're able to I
6:50
mean, they're not exactly like moving
6:52
quickly, so like and they adjusting
6:54
hands. Yeah.
6:55
>> Yeah. They're they're they're sort of
6:56
meandering together. Um so yeah, you you
6:59
catch up to them no problem.
7:01
Hey. Um, hi Tiffany. I'm really sorry to
7:04
interrupt. Jeff, sorry to interrupt. You
7:06
two look like you're having a really
7:07
good time. Um, I'm [clears throat]
7:08
really sorry those kids were really mean
7:09
to you at school. They shouldn't have
7:11
been. Uh, right after we found this on
7:13
the ground, like right where you got
7:15
knocked down, and we were wondering if
7:16
it was yours and we wanted to make sure
7:18
that we returned it if it is.
7:20
>> Uh, and he looks, oh, uh, hi, hi, Jenny.
7:24
Um, yeah. No, no, thank you. Thank you.
7:26
Thank you so much. That's definitely
7:27
mine. Uh, and he goes to reach out for
7:29
it and before he can, uh, Tiffany
7:33
snatches it out of your hand and just
7:35
gives you a glaring look, uh, and then
7:38
like hands it to to Jeffrey. Uh, and you
7:42
can see her body language is very
7:45
defensive. Um, she's standing a little
7:48
bit forward of Jeffrey, uh, and just
7:51
kind of looking at you. All right. Well,
7:52
you you did what you needed to do, so
7:54
you can go now. Yeah, that's all I was
7:57
going to do, Tiffany. I was just
7:59
returning something that he lost because
8:01
it's the right thing to do. I'm sorry to
8:03
interrupt your date.
8:04
>> You're You're right. You're sorry. And
8:06
then she turns back to Jeffree. Come on.
8:08
Let's Let's go. We're going to be late
8:10
for the movie, honey. And then starts
8:12
pulling at him to lead him away from
8:15
you.
8:16
>> I very loudly like walking back towards
8:18
my brother. I'm just like,
8:19
>> "No, I'm up.
8:20
>> She's being super mean to me." And she's
8:23
usually not like that with me. You turn
8:25
around to do that and I'm there. Like I
8:27
am right there and I am like glaring at
8:30
Tiffany.
8:32
>> Tiffany does not clock you or care about
8:34
you at all and is not even looking back.
8:37
She is literally trying to drag Jeff and
8:40
uh Jeff is looking back uh and just like
8:44
has this like he's mouththing I'm sorry
8:47
uh to you. Uh Jeff has never been You've
8:49
never had a problem with Jeff before?
8:51
>> I don't I don't have any problem with
8:52
him now. It's what the hell's up with
8:54
your girlfriend, man.
8:56
>> And and then uh Tiffany notices that
8:58
he's looking at you and just grabs his
9:00
face and moves it back towards her and
9:03
gives him a kiss and then he just melts
9:05
and starts following her.
9:07
>> Okay. Not only is that weird, you're 10,
9:11
>> right? Like
9:12
>> what you think you were going to do?
9:14
Jump him.
9:16
>> Ew.
9:17
>> That's Yeah, exactly.
9:19
F. I'm like more animated than anyone
9:22
sees me normally. I'm like super like
9:24
just
9:27
>> I think you all see this happening. Uh I
9:30
I think it's I mean Randall we know was
9:32
outside watching this. Uh Reed, this is
9:34
not too far from the the front of the
9:36
store and you got a pretty good view of
9:38
what's going on and the doors open. You
9:40
can hear all the exchanges.
9:41
>> Well, we come back like we go back in
9:43
cuz I'm like I got to get away from
9:45
that.
9:46
>> Okay. Um, so is she an alien, do you
9:50
think?
9:50
>> I mean, that's that's a lot more like
9:52
the Tiffany I remember, though. I mean,
9:54
that seems a lot more in character for
9:56
Tiffany.
9:56
>> Yeah, but did the Tiffany remember
9:58
towards me? I'm
10:02
>> the the Tiffany I remember would not be
10:05
with Jeff, but that's a lot more
10:07
Tiffanyike.
10:09
>> Yeah, but it's that's not the weird
10:10
part. The weird part is that she almost
10:13
like I'm not sure if that was just that
10:15
he was, you know, he got affected just
10:17
because she's a hot girl kissing him,
10:19
but he seemed like he went like and she
10:22
just dragged him off.
10:24
>> Like
10:24
>> Tiff Tiffany Tiffany just does that. I
10:27
mean,
10:27
>> yeah, Tiffany's boyfriends usually go. I
10:29
don't know if you ever talked to any of
10:30
them, but
10:31
>> yeah. I mean, it's worth talking like
10:34
the most popular girl in school with the
10:36
least popular guy in school. It's kind
10:37
of a he's seeing stars kind of thing
10:41
because he's batten way above his
10:43
average.
10:44
>> Um,
10:44
>> wait wait wait wait a minute. So he's
10:47
the least and she's the most.
10:50
>> That is correct.
10:52
>> So they're balancing.
10:55
>> I'm gonna go I go I go find Does anyone
10:57
have a notebook?
10:59
>> Yeah, I've got
11:00
>> Yeah. [laughter]
11:02
>> Yeah, I know.
11:02
>> I got one.
11:05
I just literally like reach into my
11:07
backpack and I just hand you a stack of
11:09
loose leaf paper and a pen.
11:11
>> All right. All right. The pencil would
11:13
be better. All right. All right. I'm
11:15
going to like do
11:16
>> I pull a pencil out as soon as you say
11:17
that.
11:18
>> Okay. [laughter] Thanks. I do like a the
11:20
whole the um the Tibetan endless knot as
11:24
one of the eight auspicious symbols. And
11:26
I I break down what I read. I'm like, I
11:29
don't I mean, it was weird that I found
11:31
the book in the first place because I've
11:32
been looking for it for months. And no
11:35
offense, Reed, but this place is not
11:36
exactly a a specialty bookstore.
11:39
>> Yeah. No offense taken.
11:41
>> And yeah, boom. Granted, it was like
11:43
some kind of time life mysteries of the
11:45
occult, but still I I don't this this is
11:49
weird. like this is the whole idea of
11:52
this particular symbol uh the agamela I
11:55
think it's called uh the endless knot is
11:57
that it is based around this similar to
12:00
the one I showed you guys before but not
12:03
is it's it's not as is based on personal
12:07
stuff it's more like a universal like
12:10
like the the dharma karma whatever it's
12:13
called it's about like how if you do
12:16
something bad over here something good
12:18
over here happens to counterbalance that
12:20
the whole thing is connected. Everything
12:22
is part of this cycle, this knot. It's
12:25
like, you know, everything if you have
12:27
one rope, you tie in a knot, every part
12:28
of that knot is still part of the one
12:30
rope. It's it's like kind of like that.
12:33
And I'm sorry, like the poorest person
12:37
we know has suddenly, you know, the the
12:41
richest car you've ever seen and the the
12:44
most the most
12:46
>> popular girl, least popular guy,
12:50
>> does that mean that the richest person
12:53
that we know is now broke or something?
12:56
>> Jeffrey's family. Jeffrey was
13:00
Jeffy's family, the Gundersons, they
13:01
were they were rich.
13:04
>> I mean, maybe we need to kind of point
13:06
>> of point of order. Jeffrey was not the
13:08
poor person.
13:09
>> No, that was
13:10
>> Yeah, but the Yeah. Who had the Porsche?
13:15
>> I don't know. All I know is we Yeah.
13:19
>> Yeah. I'm
13:22
>> Didn't he want us to write a paper?
13:24
>> Yeah. Well, we have a thing we have to
13:25
do anyway. We've got to figure out about
13:27
like luck in this town. Like
13:30
maybe that little coin pouch had
13:32
something to do with like extra luck,
13:34
but where would come in on all of that?
13:37
>> He took it back, right?
13:39
>> Well, she took it from me and handed it
13:41
to him.
13:41
>> Yeah, he's got it again now.
13:44
>> But if it's about the coin purse, then
13:46
why did Mishka
13:48
have
13:49
>> Yeah, that's why that's why I'm
13:50
confused. Like is it something that
13:52
maybe Mar like I don't know if they're
13:55
related or if or what's going on like
13:58
luckwise, but like you had it and all of
14:01
a sudden this book that you've been
14:02
looking for for ages is just randomly in
14:04
our bookstore and then it's never been
14:05
there before and like you couldn't
14:07
special order it or something.
14:08
>> I've tried to get this book for like two
14:10
years. I mean, not
14:11
>> and then all of a sudden it's just here.
14:14
>> So Jenny, um
14:18
you you definitely clock that, right?
14:20
like this is something that the book in
14:23
particular is something that uh Jacob
14:26
has been talking about wanting for a
14:28
while and again we're in the time before
14:30
Amazon folks this you you have to order
14:32
it through a bookstore um and just
14:34
hasn't been able to get it in. Um,
14:37
I'm going to actually say that that
14:41
I don't want to I I don't want to go too
14:43
deep in that, but yeah, you you
14:46
definitely this is something you were
14:47
you were really looking for, Jacob.
14:52
>> Yeah. I mean, for, you know, I I've
14:54
wanted to do the the Tibetan stuff
14:56
forever. I just couldn't get anything on
14:58
it. Like, there's just not a ton of,
15:00
especially in late 80s, early 90s US,
15:03
upstate New York. The idea that I'd be
15:06
able to find like a specialty book on
15:07
Tibetan folklore and mysticism, not that
15:10
common.
15:11
>> So, yeah. I mean, what do you what are
15:13
you guys going to do in this moment? You
15:15
have you have the entire town
15:17
>> uh at your disposal essentially?
15:19
>> Well,
15:21
who took the best notes from the from
15:24
today's history lecture?
15:26
>> Jenny. [laughter]
15:29
>> Hang on. I go I go find a question.
15:32
Yeah,
15:32
>> I'm looking I'm looking at my notebook,
15:35
which is half notes, half pineapple
15:37
doodles.
15:38
>> Um,
15:39
>> trust me,
15:40
>> I go plunk down at like one of the I
15:42
mean, it's like a localish bookstore
15:43
where it's got like tables and stuff,
15:45
right, where you can like do a little
15:46
bit of studying in between. I pop my
15:48
backpack down and I pull out like this
15:50
massive massive like three- ring binder,
15:52
like one of the early Trapper Keeper
15:54
kind of things, and I just plunk it down
15:56
and I flip to history and I flip to
15:58
where like all of my redone better notes
16:01
are, and it's all like colorcoded and
16:03
highlighted, and it's like
16:04
[clears throat] here.
16:05
>> She's got the special red pen that she
16:07
only uses when she crosses out something
16:10
she said.
16:11
>> Well, yeah, that's important. Obviously,
16:13
>> notes for her notes.
16:15
>> Yeah. M
16:17
>> uh Randall has uh surreptitiously stolen
16:19
Rey's notebook and is drawing an upside
16:21
down pineapple in it because he knows
16:22
what that means. [laughter]
16:25
>> Um
16:27
okay, so we've got to do something about
16:30
the history of the town, right?
16:33
>> Or no, just about wasn't like how the
16:36
town has affected you.
16:38
>> So Jenny's Jenny's notes were very are
16:41
very clear on this one where uh Mr.
16:43
house um has basically said that he
16:47
wants you to go out and discover the
16:50
stories of the town. Ask the people who
16:53
live here uh or do investigation however
16:56
you want to to uncover the history of
16:58
the town something local and then to
17:01
write a paper about what you learn.
17:05
>> Talk to like
17:07
>> and the librarian or the mayor. He was,
17:11
but he was talking about Jeffrey
17:13
Pineapple, right? And having this weird
17:16
luck.
17:18
>> This can't be a coincidence. This can't
17:21
just be a coincidence
17:23
>> that we were just talking about this
17:26
>> super old and she knows like everything
17:28
and we could probably go talk to her and
17:30
nobody ever talks to her.
17:32
>> That is a very good That's a very good
17:34
idea. What is that person's name?
17:38
Magdalina. Oh, heresy. [laughter]
17:42
>> Sorry. Oh, heresy.
17:44
>> Yep. Oh, heresy.
17:47
[laughter]
17:47
>> My Warhammer brain just exploded with
17:49
ideas a little bit.
17:52
>> Feel free to like change her last name
17:53
or whatever. I just like Magdalene.
17:55
>> Oh, no. We're going to go talk to Mrs.
17:57
O'Haresy.
17:58
>> [laughter]
17:59
>> Uh so yeah, you you guys you guys are
18:01
talking about this and you know that the
18:03
oldest person in town uh who is somehow
18:07
above the age of 100 uh and still
18:10
kicking around uh is uh Maggie O'Haresy.
18:14
Uh she, you know, very conveniently
18:17
lives in the old folks home.
18:19
>> Is that a married name?
18:21
>> I don't know that you guys would know
18:23
that your kids.
18:25
Um, she's definitely she's over in the
18:27
old folks home, but she is uh she's
18:30
definitely there and uh you guys can can
18:32
probably make your way over there if you
18:33
wanted to and see if you can uh reach
18:36
out to her.
18:38
>> Yeah, I mean, Mrs. O'Harees has like
18:40
been around for a really long time and
18:41
she doesn't get a whole lot of visitors.
18:43
Maybe we just go be nice and see if she
18:44
can give us any kind of information
18:46
>> and maybe keep an eye out for other
18:49
signs of people who are very lucky today
18:51
or very unlucky. If what you were
18:54
saying, Jacob, about
18:58
balance is right, someone has to be
19:00
unlucky.
19:03
>> I mean, you know, uh Jeff got his got
19:06
was on the verge of getting a beating
19:07
and then suddenly
19:08
>> that's just like every day. That's every
19:10
other day that happens to Jeff.
19:12
>> Wow. [laughter]
19:13
That's just every day. I'm not arguing
19:15
with you, but
19:17
>> it is kind of true. Like I try to be
19:19
really nice to him because everybody
19:20
else is really really not nice to him.
19:22
Like he gets bullied a lot. Like he got
19:24
shoved in a locker yesterday and now all
19:27
of a sudden he's dating the it girl from
19:29
school.
19:30
>> I mean
19:32
I'm going to go buy this book before
19:34
somehow I lose it. I mean I'm sure
19:37
>> I just grab it out of your hands and I
19:39
walk up to the counter and put it with
19:40
the pile of stuff.
19:42
>> I can buy my own book.
19:43
>> I know. But mom and dad have a whole
19:45
like account tab here for me to just
19:47
pick up books whenever I want. I don't
19:49
mind putting it on here. I'll just tell
19:51
them I'm learning something.
19:53
>> Yeah, because god forbid anyone believe
19:55
I might read a book.
19:57
>> I mean, I believe you read books.
20:02
>> When I
20:03
>> Mom and dad are going to question a big
20:04
expensive book if it's coming from you,
20:06
they're not going to question it for me.
20:07
And you need to save your money for
20:08
stuff that you want to do with it. I do
20:10
pay attention, you know.
20:12
>> I mean, the book is what I would do with
20:14
it. But yeah, look, I'm not when when I
20:17
say stuff like that, it's at them. It's
20:18
not at you. It's not your fault.
20:19
>> I know. I'm just saying
20:21
>> just let me put it on the tab and
20:23
they'll just pay for it and they don't
20:24
even care.
20:25
>> Fine.
20:27
>> I put like this whole stack of books on
20:29
the counter plus like the big stack of
20:31
all the college books and stuff that are
20:32
way more expensive than everything else
20:34
and there's just like two massive stacks
20:36
of books sitting there and I go through
20:40
them and check it out and put it on the
20:42
tab and I slip you an extra Sweet Valley
20:46
High book. This one's really good.
20:48
>> Thank Not that I would know that.
20:50
>> And I grab uh
20:52
>> And then I grab Randall's book and I
20:54
hand it to Randall because I knew it was
20:55
in the middle of the pile and I checked
20:56
it out with my stuff anyway. [laughter]
20:57
And then I hand my brother his book.
21:00
>> I think Randall
21:01
>> and I grab everything else. And I'm just
21:03
like,
21:04
>> do we have a place we can put this where
21:06
I don't have to carry it around? Is
21:07
really heavy. The vet are going to put
21:08
it in the basket.
21:10
>> I can say that
21:12
>> I can stock it behind the counter to
21:13
pick up later if you want.
21:14
>> Well, you can do that. Uh, I will say
21:16
that it's getting around 8:00 at night,
21:18
which is generally about the time the
21:19
bookstore starts to close down. Um,
21:22
while there are still restaurants and
21:23
other stuff in the in the town that are
21:25
open, uh, later, like the movie theater
21:27
and and bars, of course.
21:29
>> Just give it to me. Put it I'll put it
21:31
in my backpack and take it home. You
21:32
guys can go talk to Miss Oeresy.
21:36
>> Meresy's probably sleeping. Maybe we all
21:38
just go to bed and then we like go first
21:41
thing in the morning because it's
21:42
Saturday and go be nice.
21:44
All right. Like just, you know, like I
21:46
said, throw out my backpack. I can carry
21:48
it. It's not that big a deal.
21:50
>> Yeah.
21:52
>> And I think at that point you guys uh
21:54
you you uh go outside, you wait for Rita
21:57
to close up the shop. Uh you all hop on
22:00
your bikes and you head home since you
22:01
all live in the same neighborhood. Um
22:03
all down the road from each other.
22:05
>> Randall, who drives in yet because even
22:06
though he's got a car, he's the last one
22:08
to get there. [laughter]
22:09
>> Yep.
22:11
Um, and then you wind up uh you wind up
22:14
getting home you and and everybody has a
22:16
nice quiet evening. Uh, your parents ask
22:18
you how your day was in the
22:20
stereotypical 1980s, 1990s way of uh
22:23
asking their kids what they did all day
22:25
without really caring what their kids
22:26
did all day. Um,
22:28
>> no, that's not true. Our parents are
22:30
helicoptering on Jenny. Me,
22:32
>> only Jenny. Yeah.
22:35
Um, and then you wind up going to bed
22:37
for the evening. Uh, and nothing
22:39
eventful happens. Um, you wake up the
22:42
next day and you guys can pick right
22:44
back up on Saturday morning. Unless
22:47
there was anything specific you wanted
22:48
to do at night before you went to bed.
22:51
I'm just reading up on the symbols, the
22:54
auspicious symbols because I'm curious
22:55
about them and if how they might be
22:57
related to all this. If they are, they
23:00
might not be. Might just be that the
23:01
book showed up. But it is to me really
23:03
weird that the book showed up all of a
23:05
sudden.
23:06
M.
23:07
>> Okay.
23:10
>> All right.
23:10
>> I think Jenny just sits there and does
23:11
all of her studying that she's got to do
23:13
for like the whole weekend in one shot.
23:15
She just goes over all of her notes,
23:17
make sure everything's right, and then
23:18
just puts it all away.
23:22
>> All right.
23:23
I think uh
23:25
>> Re is going to
23:28
she has a way to climb out her window up
23:30
onto the roof and like watch the stars
23:32
sometimes and just kind of scanning the
23:34
city while she's up there such as she
23:36
can see from like the second story of
23:38
her house and like see if anything it
23:41
it's a weird unsettling day. Is there
23:43
anything weird out here? which maybe she
23:47
doesn't see anything, but just kind of
23:50
vibing
23:51
and watching the stars for a couple
23:53
hours before coming back in and going to
23:54
bed.
23:55
>> Yeah, I'd say that, you know, it's
23:58
definitely been a weird day for you and
23:59
as you hang out on the roof, um to call
24:03
it that there's an odd energy in the air
24:05
is probably the best way to describe it.
24:08
>> Everything just feels a little off. Um
24:12
you like the stuff you've seen today uh
24:15
and the town seems uh pretty
24:19
I mean otherwise it looks normal like as
24:22
you're sitting up here looking at the
24:23
rest of the town.
24:24
>> Uh the lights that you would expect to
24:25
see are on. There's no like explosions
24:27
or ninjas or alien spaceships coming
24:30
down and like abducting people or
24:32
anything like that. Uh it's just the
24:34
normal sleepy time activities that you
24:36
expect from the town. Uh but you do you
24:38
do just catch this feeling that just
24:40
like something is on the air. Uh and
24:44
with tomorrow being uh the uh 150th
24:48
anniversary of the town founding. Um
24:51
some of it you chalk up to just people
24:52
getting ready for it. um and the party
24:55
that's going to be happening on Saturday
24:57
night and the uh middle of the uh the
25:00
town over at uh what's called Pineapples
25:04
Pond uh which is the central fountain
25:08
located at the the the middle of like
25:10
this main street goes up to it and then
25:13
goes around it and back through it. Um
25:16
but like it's the main town square
25:18
essentially. Um so everybody is setting
25:20
up for there. Uh, and you're sure that
25:22
it's there some of the nervous energy is
25:24
probably from that. 150 years of
25:27
surviving is a pretty big thing for for
25:29
a town,
25:31
but nothing else out of the ordinary.
25:32
And you can you wind up crawling back in
25:34
and and going back to or going to sleep.
25:37
Uh, does Randall do anything before he
25:40
goes to bed?
25:42
>> Uh, Randall has uh we we've established
25:44
that Randall has the Nintendo.
25:46
>> Uh, technically Randall has the Sega
25:48
Genesis. Uh, so Randall uh plays video
25:51
games way too late for a Friday night
25:53
and then goes to bed.
25:54
>> Altered beast, isn't it?
25:55
>> Uh, it's definitely Altered Beast. Yeah.
25:57
[laughter]
25:59
>> All right. Again, the evening passes
26:02
peacefully with your activities. Uh, you
26:04
wake up Saturday morning. Um, I think
26:08
uh Re, Jacob, and Jinny are probably uh
26:12
awake well before Randall. Um, and I
26:15
think that they probably wind up uh
26:17
going to Randall's house. And I don't
26:19
know why, but Randall strikes me as the
26:21
type of kid that like has the bedroom in
26:22
the basement type deal. And like there's
26:25
a door that leads directly down to the
26:27
basement from the outside. So, you have
26:28
like your own little personal apartment
26:30
space almost kind of.
26:31
>> Yeah, that sounds like it. I I think his
26:33
parents have just kind of established at
26:34
this point that they can't really do
26:35
anything with him. So, they're just
26:36
like, "All right, you got your own
26:38
space. We're going to ignore you. Don't
26:39
burn the house down.
26:40
>> Just keep him contained." Like, he's not
26:42
a bad kid. He's [laughter] just not a
26:44
good kid either. He just kind of exists.
26:45
So, whatever.
26:46
>> He just does. Yeah, he doesn't really do
26:48
anything. So,
26:50
>> just
26:50
>> And I think you're I think you're woken
26:52
up by the the banging on the door. And I
26:55
I suspect, and you guys can correct me
26:57
if I'm wrong, this seems like a jinny
26:58
energy.
27:01
>> Yeah. Well, certainly I'm I'm probably
27:03
more likely to just be in his house when
27:05
he gets up. Like there's windows.
27:08
Um
27:10
>> Oh [laughter] my god, you're creepy.
27:12
Yeah. Look, you're surprised.
27:15
>> I'm I'm I'm gonna like toss like a
27:19
softball at the window.
27:22
>> Wow. Okay. So, we're breaking my windows
27:25
now.
27:26
>> No. Okay. Maybe not a soft Maybe like a
27:28
basketball. Like something that's not
27:30
going to break a window, but make a
27:32
racket.
27:33
>> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's a basement
27:35
window. It's fine. Yeah. Uh yeah. If
27:37
anybody's banging on the door, it
27:38
definitely has Big Jenny energy. So, uh
27:41
Yeah. I think just like at the door
27:43
blurry eyed. What?
27:44
>> I think Jacob Jacob is stalking. Re is
27:46
trying to figure out what to throw at
27:48
the window and then Jinny just like
27:49
walks up to the door.
27:51
>> Yeah. I literally just roll my eyes and
27:52
walk up and ring the doorbell.
27:55
>> Yeah. What? Oh. Oh, right. You guys are
27:58
going to talk to the old lady today.
28:01
>> Yeah. I'm sorry [sighs] to wake you up.
28:02
You're gonna come with?
28:04
>> Yeah. What else am I going to do? Hang
28:06
out here all day? he says, looking
28:08
wistfully at the Sega Genesis with a
28:10
copy beltered beast.
28:12
>> Uh, yeah.
28:13
>> Oh, man. You got a Sega.
28:16
>> I got to just point this out.
28:18
>> If she's real old, then she probably
28:20
doesn't want to be woken up.
28:22
>> That's true.
28:22
>> She's real old, she's probably already
28:24
awake.
28:25
>> Yeah, but I'm just saying maybe we could
28:27
play Altered Beast for an hour. That's
28:29
all I want to say. [laughter]
28:31
>> I'm here for that. I'll watch.
28:33
>> All right. Yeah. I mean, yeah, my
28:35
grandma gets up at like 5, so old people
28:37
old people have weird relations at time,
28:39
but yeah, you guys can hang out for a
28:40
little bit if you want.
28:42
>> And I think that's how you spend your
28:44
[laughter] little quick part of the
28:45
morning. Um, you uh you play some
28:49
Altered Beast. Randall is uh busy having
28:52
a cigarette and smoking a smoking a
28:54
cigarette and having a cup of coffee uh
28:57
[laughter]
28:57
cuz he's a big man.
29:00
>> He is the oldest teenager in the world.
29:01
He
29:01
>> is the oldest teenager [laughter] in the
29:02
world.
29:04
How old are you? 18. How long have you
29:06
been routine? A while. [laughter]
29:09
>> You know,
29:11
>> one of those 18-year-olds that started
29:12
smoking when he was like 15, first got
29:14
into high school, and just
29:15
>> Yeah, absolutely. Yes. He's been
29:17
drinking coffee since he was
29:18
>> I am not that stereotype at all, and
29:20
we're going to move on from that.
29:22
[laughter]
29:23
The dorsiest and hairiest of
29:25
15year-olds.
29:28
Uh but you guys you guys finish your
29:29
altered beast session and you wind up
29:31
making your way uh across town to Shady
29:34
Acres uh the retirement home for the old
29:38
folks. It's actually a very nice house
29:40
um on the other side of town. Uh old
29:43
Victorian style really large um plenty
29:47
of attendance and you can see a bunch of
29:49
the older folks that have uh maybe uh
29:52
been moved here by their families. Uh
29:54
there's plenty of folks visiting them.
29:56
Uh, this is not a neglectful place.
29:58
>> No, I'm pretty sure this is where
29:59
Grandpa Big Jake uh ended up where he
30:02
>> Yeah. And and you would remember that
30:04
too, like your your your grandfather um
30:07
actually really liked it here and uh he
30:10
led a whole bunch of arts and uh crafts
30:12
classes and uh stuff like that. And you
30:14
spent a lot of time here and I think a
30:16
couple of the residents actually
30:17
remember you um and they will uh you
30:20
know they they'll wave to you and you
30:23
know, hi Jacob. I I I know it's Jacob,
30:25
not not little Jake. Jacob, I
30:27
understand. I remember you're you look
30:29
just like your grandfather. Uh and you
30:32
know, uh Mrs. Jameson like pinches your
30:35
cheeks and uh you know, oh, you're so
30:38
handsome, just like he was. You bet
30:40
you're a real lady killer.
30:43
>> No,
30:45
that's what they all say. He starts
30:46
giggling and like all the like the all
30:48
the old people are fawning over you cuz
30:49
like again you spent a lot of time with
30:51
your grandfather and they absolutely
30:54
adore you for that because their
30:56
grandchildren barely ever visit them.
30:58
[laughter]
30:59
>> Yeah, I I I was getting that sense. Um
31:03
uh what was we're looking for? U Miss
31:06
Heresy. Uh we got
31:08
>> Oh, Maggie.
31:10
>> Yeah, got some questions to ask her.
31:13
>> Oh, no problem at all, sweetie. She's
31:15
she's in the back on the on the the
31:17
patio in the garden. Um that's where she
31:19
spends every morning. You can go find
31:21
her. I'm sure she's she'd love some
31:23
company. You know, her kids don't visit
31:25
her. They're they're awful. They might
31:27
be dead.
31:29
>> Well, maybe. I don't know.
31:31
>> Wow.
31:33
>> I'm just saying that she's likeund
31:35
something, you know.
31:37
>> You don't just say that
31:40
>> again. I am awkward stretch. [laughter]
31:46
You guys can
31:47
>> I have this awkward thing as you see a
31:49
bunch of the old folks just kind of like
31:50
look at each other and to kind of like
31:52
do the the under their breath like
31:53
tutting. Um I'm sorry I you know it was
31:57
nice seeing you.
31:58
>> Let's go, lady killer. [laughter]
32:02
>> And you guys can head around to the back
32:03
of the the property and it's a it's
32:05
again it's a rather large home. Uh and
32:07
the back is absolutely gorgeous. You can
32:09
see that there is a rather large patio
32:11
that spans the entire back portion of
32:13
the house. Um, plenty of chairs and for
32:16
the residents to come out and uh have
32:18
tea or lunch or sun uh just sunbathe
32:21
themselves essentially like soak up the
32:22
rays of the sun. Um, there's a little
32:25
garden in the back that looks like many
32:27
of the residents are tending to. Plenty
32:29
of large rose bushes and uh your
32:32
stereotypical like you know keep
32:34
yourself busy type of project for the
32:36
old folks. Uh, and you see Maggie.
32:38
Maggie O'Haresy uh just sitting on the
32:40
on the the veranda in her wheelchair uh
32:43
just kind of smiling and uh you know
32:47
kind of looking out on everything. She's
32:48
got a little thing of iced tea with her
32:50
and she's just kind of soaking up the
32:53
rays of the sun.
32:58
>> Good day when you can just sit outside
32:59
and enjoy the sun.
33:01
>> I guess I'm going to have to be the face
33:03
character here. Um, I am very awkwardly
33:06
shuffling my way over. Uh, Miss Heresy,
33:11
I
33:12
>> Oh, hello, Jacob. How you doing, boy?
33:16
>> Um, I'm okay. This This is my sister,
33:18
Jenny. I don't know if you ever met
33:19
Jenny. Uh,
33:21
>> oh, she's the smart one, isn't she?
33:23
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
33:25
>> Look at you. Look at you. Come over
33:27
here, dear. Come over here. Don't Don't
33:29
be shy.
33:32
If Jenny isn't going, I kind of give you
33:33
a little shuff.
33:34
>> I I walk up just a little bit. Um, hi
33:38
Mrs. O'Haresy. I haven't seen you for a
33:40
few years. How are you doing?
33:42
>> Oh, I'm just lovely, dear. How have you
33:45
been doing? How's school?
33:47
>> Really busy. It's really tiring.
33:51
>> Oh, I know. It's It's so tough being so
33:53
smart and so pretty, isn't it? And she
33:56
like like pinches your cheek and she's
33:58
like, "Ah, I was going to be like you
34:00
once. I was going to run the world. Uh
34:03
but then uh life had other plans, but
34:06
not you. You're going to be a big shot.
34:08
I can tell. You're going to be so great.
34:13
>> Um thank you. I don't know how great I
34:16
actually kind of want to be. I just
34:17
really want to get done with school cuz
34:20
I'm younger than everybody else and it's
34:22
kind of rough. And then she she kind of
34:25
she leans over and and as she leans
34:27
over, she kind of whispers, "You'll be
34:29
great at whatever you decide to do,
34:30
dear. Even if it's not run the world,
34:33
just make sure it's what you want to
34:35
do." And then as she lean as she comes
34:38
and and goes to sit back, uh she reaches
34:40
over to the table and pulls a a poppy uh
34:44
from the planter, the little uh
34:46
centerpiece on the table, and tucks it
34:48
behind your ear.
34:51
>> Thank you.
34:53
Appreciate it.
34:55
>> Well, I know you all a lot didn't just
34:57
come here to to visit an old lady. Uh
35:01
what what can I do for you youngans?
35:03
It's it's not often we get your year
35:05
here. Especially since and she looks
35:07
over at Jacob uh engine especially since
35:10
uh Big Jake passed. I'm still so sorry
35:12
about that.
35:14
>> Yeah. Uh yeah, that that that was I kind
35:20
of trail off like I I very much
35:23
unfocused and don't really look like I
35:25
know what to say.
35:27
>> You know, your your your grandfather and
35:30
my husband were like best of friends.
35:32
Did he ever tell you?
35:34
>> Uh mostly he talked about being on the
35:38
Lake Erie and and the Great Lakes doing
35:41
shipping when he was younger. Uh, was
35:44
your husband one of the guys on the
35:46
boat? Cuz he talked about those guys
35:48
mostly.
35:50
>> Yeah, he was. He was one of the shipans
35:52
with your with your granddad.
35:55
>> Then, uh, your your husband was probably
35:59
either Rosco,
36:02
uh,
36:04
Skip or Terrannius,
36:08
right? Those are the three guys he
36:09
mentions. Mention
36:10
>> ah, Tyrannius. Yeah, that was him. That
36:12
was it was my beautiful what the [ __ ]
36:14
daddy. He was such a lovely man.
36:20
Uh then maybe you could the reason we
36:23
came um Jenny actually suggested it. Uh
36:27
there's we're supposed to do this paper
36:31
um about like we're going to write about
36:33
the history of the town. They they were
36:35
talking about Mr. pineapple. Um, and how
36:39
I mean there's a rumor he like was invol
36:42
he was like he got shot and nothing
36:43
happened and fell 100 feet and didn't
36:45
die. And then one day they found him
36:47
drowned outside in a dry day and you
36:51
know he was like
36:53
that we're just kind of like looking
36:55
into like that and like if what was
36:57
really going on with him uh cuz cuz that
37:00
seemed like that's what he wanted us to
37:02
talk about. So maybe you know something.
37:05
>> Uh you notice she gets a little taken
37:09
aback by that.
37:11
Oh, I I I'm certain I don't know much
37:15
about the pineapples or the the founding
37:19
fathers. Um and I'm going to need you
37:22
guys to make a charm check somebody.
37:27
>> Oh wow. I'm the Viking there because she
37:30
is uh she is very clearly uncomfortable
37:33
about this
37:36
>> charm. You said
37:37
>> charm.
37:38
>> It's a D for me.
37:40
>> See, I'm pretty good at it, but I also
37:41
haven't talked to her yet. [laughter]
37:44
>> Kind of disengaged in this.
37:46
>> I'm going to I'm going to make a roll
37:47
and if it goes well, I'll cut in.
37:50
>> I rolled a six.
37:52
>> I rolled a five.
37:56
I'm going to roll cuz I have a lead in
37:57
if I do well. Ah, can't roll. Uh, nope.
38:01
I rolled a one [laughter]
38:05
on a d12. I'm not paying attention to
38:07
this,
38:08
>> Jacob. Uh, I I have a d4 and I rolled a
38:12
four.
38:12
>> So, roll again.
38:21
Okay, I'm gonna start taking pictures
38:22
when I roll this thing because another
38:24
four.
38:26
I mean, there's a one of that. So, it's
38:28
pretty good. [laughter]
38:32
>> Okay, thank god. Um, just a one this
38:35
time. So, four and four is eight and one
38:37
Norton is nine.
38:39
>> And I got I got the intuitive thing. I
38:41
don't know what that does in this
38:42
situation, if anything. Uh,
38:45
intuitive I think is going to give you a
38:47
slight bonus unless you want to ask a
38:48
specific question.
38:50
>> Oh, you have to you have to spend an
38:52
adversity token, but then you can just
38:54
ask a question.
38:55
>> Yeah.
38:56
>> Okay. Um,
38:57
>> but you don't have an adversity token.
38:59
You haven't failed.
39:00
>> Yeah.
39:00
>> However, I will say that Phil, you
39:02
failed pretty spectacularly at your
39:04
charm. So, I'm going to give you uh an
39:07
adversity token um
39:10
>> to spend later as you you start I think
39:13
you try to like edge your way into the
39:15
conversation and just like do a
39:16
spectacular job of like spouting off
39:19
some nonsense and then she just like
39:21
completely ignores you.
39:23
>> That's fair.
39:25
Um she she looks at you uh Jacob and her
39:29
her trepidation softens a little bit and
39:32
her features uh sort of relax. U she
39:35
looks at all of you. She's like
39:38
well I'm not going to do it out here. So
39:40
follow me. And she starts wheeling back
39:42
into the house and you follow I'm
39:44
assuming you guys all follow her in.
39:46
>> Yeah.
39:47
>> Yeah. Uh, and she takes you back through
39:50
and she says hello to a bunch of the the
39:52
staff that are working and uh she takes
39:55
you to her room and once everybody's in
39:57
she closes the door and all of you
40:00
notice um that it's not your it's very
40:03
much your stereotypical old woman's room
40:06
um that you've seen from TV. Chachkis
40:08
all over the place, doilies on
40:09
everything. um deep comforters despite
40:12
the fact that it is summer uh or summer
40:16
adjacent like we're coming up on uh on
40:18
summer here soon shortly. So the days
40:21
are getting warmer and longer and yet
40:23
there's still you know eight comforters
40:25
on the bed. Um, but you also notice
40:29
around the walls are pictures and
40:33
paintings and among the chachkis are uh
40:38
little trinkets and they all look like
40:41
they are
40:43
very similar
40:45
or adjacent to stuff that Jacob you were
40:50
reading about in your book.
40:52
>> Like one's two fishes. like one's two
40:54
fishes,
40:55
>> one's another representation of the
40:57
dharma knot, one looks like it is
40:59
>> uh looks like paintings of what you
41:02
would assume would possibly be deities.
41:05
Um like intertwined and like holding
41:08
hands and dancing. Um and then there's a
41:10
bunch of other stuff not just from
41:12
Tibetan culture. Uh it looks like stuff
41:14
from like possibly Chinese in origin,
41:17
Japanese in origin, uh stuff from the
41:19
Middle East. Um, and you flash back and
41:23
remember that your grandfather did talk
41:25
about the fact that he was a sailor and
41:27
it wasn't just on the Great Lakes, uh,
41:31
during the time of, you know, the wars.
41:35
He traveled the world. He was he was a
41:37
navy man. Um, and so he brought back
41:41
stuff occasionally from other places.
41:43
So, it's safe to assume, at least in
41:45
this moment, that the stuff here is
41:48
stuff that Tyrannis uh Tyrannius brought
41:51
back from his travels as well.
41:55
>> I saw that. I'm going to like point at
41:57
the two fishes. I saw that in a book I
41:59
found yesterday.
42:01
>> Oh, did you, Dear? Yeah. Uh, Terrannius
42:03
brought that back from uh, I want to say
42:06
he had to stay in some port town uh,
42:09
that had like a uh, I think it was
42:11
Tibetan population and he he wound up
42:15
picking up a bunch of this stuff from
42:16
there.
42:20
And she looks at everybody and as she
42:22
closes the door she's like,
42:25
"All right, what do you want to know?"
42:28
Um,
42:32
>> Jenny, maybe you should be doing the
42:34
talking. I'm not great at this.
42:36
>> Jenny has already crisscrossed sitting
42:38
on the floor with a notebook in her lap
42:39
and a pen. Um,
42:42
um, well, we have to try to get like
42:46
information about like what happened and
42:49
why Mr. Pineapple might have been so
42:52
super lucky and so not lucky. And we've
42:55
seen a lot of weird stuff going on
42:56
around town. Um, and we know like
42:58
today's the big anniversary celebration,
43:00
so they're going to be partying later,
43:01
but like we're just trying to kind of
43:04
get some information about the history
43:06
of the town and the history of Mr.
43:08
Pineapple and his possible luck that
43:13
founded the town and not just his
43:16
brains.
43:17
are
43:19
um sorry Jenny I don't mean to interrupt
43:22
but
43:23
>> no I mean I could you this is a little
43:25
confusing for me too
43:26
>> I like if there are any myths or things
43:30
that have happened local legend about
43:33
people being lucky because in the past
43:35
couple of days we have seen some some
43:39
kids from school who have been strangely
43:43
uh strangely lucky
43:46
And
43:49
>> seems like
43:51
>> Oh,
43:52
>> she she she looks a little frightened at
43:55
that. Uh and she turns to you, Jacob. Uh
43:59
Jacob, be a dear. Um see that uh that
44:02
bundle by the door? Can you light it for
44:05
me, please?
44:06
>> Okay. Um I'll go over and do that.
44:10
>> It looks like it's a bunch of herbs and
44:12
um [snorts] and whatnot. like a a floor
44:15
bouquet but dried like almost like
44:17
incense and you light it and that's
44:18
exactly what winds up like wafting um
44:21
smoke sort of lazily meanders to the the
44:25
ceiling quicker than you would expect um
44:28
and starts almost forming a ring around
44:31
the top of the room as the room is
44:34
filled with uh the herbaceious scent of
44:38
uh sage and rosemary and thyme um and a
44:43
very earthy the uh smell with it that
44:46
almost smells metallic in nature.
44:51
All right. Well, it was bound to happen
44:54
again at some point, I guess.
44:57
>> Jacob, Jenny, do you know your
44:59
grandfather uh and your family were one
45:01
of the founding members of this town?
45:02
Yeah.
45:04
>> No.
45:05
>> No. Uh grandpa did not talk a lot about
45:07
anything before him.
45:11
Well, your your grandfather
45:14
uh my husband and our family from
45:16
lineage from that side as well as the
45:18
pineapples,
45:20
they were all they were all servicemen
45:23
together. Their family going way back
45:26
way back past the 1800s.
45:30
They served in king's navies across uh
45:33
time in memorial.
45:36
They
45:37
all traveled to to to various places
45:41
together. Uh, and Mr. Pineapple himself
45:44
and the rest of them, they'd bring
45:46
trinkets and trophies home.
45:50
Well, it said, and there is no
45:52
confirmation of it. Uh, and she winks at
45:55
that
45:57
Mr. Pineapple found something in his
46:01
travels that allowed him to
46:05
make a bargain, a bargain with something
46:09
not of this world.
46:11
and she kind of nods at the painting on
46:15
the uh wall that depicts uh two
46:20
like beings. One beautiful and majestic
46:23
uh with four arms wrapped in uh red
46:26
robes with their uh hair pulled up. Um
46:31
holding hands and dancing with what
46:33
looks like an old withered crone uh
46:35
whose skin is gray hair silver. Um the
46:39
robe that they are wearing is uh you
46:42
know shoddy and and threadbear and
46:45
mothworn. Uh their hair is down and
46:48
unckempt. Also has four arms. Uh as it
46:51
looks like they're dancing around uh
46:54
what appears to be some form of water
46:56
source. Um nobody ever really knew if it
47:00
was true or not, but damn, that man was
47:03
lucky.
47:05
the the stories, at least from what was
47:08
passed down from
47:10
our family down through my husband and
47:12
and such, they're true. He was very
47:16
lucky.
47:18
Mr. uh Mr. Pineapple there, he
47:21
absolutely he was shot in a duel
47:25
twice,
47:28
lived
47:30
no scars to show for it.
47:33
His fortune came overnight.
47:38
The deal for this land, it wasn't for
47:41
sale. At least that's what we were told.
47:44
Yet somehow he bought it
47:48
and founded the town.
47:51
Everything was going sunshine and roses
47:53
for him until it wasn't.
47:58
Do you know the story about how he was
47:59
found in the street?
48:01
>> Uh yeah. our teacher told us about it.
48:05
>> It was a weird story to be told in
48:07
history class. I mean, that's not the
48:09
everyday history class thing.
48:12
>> Yeah, Mr. House is a weird one. He comes
48:14
by every now and then and asks ask
48:16
questions of some of the older folks.
48:18
Um,
48:20
no, he he was frown dead drowned in the
48:23
middle of town. There's no there was no
48:26
water, lake, pond, fountain even.
48:30
Nobody knew what happened. There was no
48:32
water trail, no anything.
48:36
And so the town did what the town always
48:37
does.
48:39
They stopped talking about it.
48:43
>> The fountain in the middle of town, the
48:45
one that bears his statue, it's on the
48:48
spot where he passed
48:50
as a remembrance of the man who founded
48:52
the town and trying to turn tragedy into
48:55
a good memory. Tried to, you know,
48:57
remember the good, not the bad. Seems a
49:00
little morbid to build a pond at the
49:03
place where someone drowned.
49:07
>> Yes, but also if I've learned anything
49:10
in my hundred years on this world,
49:12
deary, it's the fact that sometimes you
49:16
have to put something over something
49:18
else to keep it sealed.
49:21
>> Oh,
49:23
I've seen enough weird things in my time
49:25
here.
49:27
I've seen enough unexplainable things to
49:29
know that sometimes these stories are
49:32
maybe more than stories.
49:36
If you're going to go looking into this
49:38
stuff, deers,
49:42
please be careful.
49:46
>> Not even sure how to be careful when
49:48
chasing
49:50
legends, myths.
49:54
Uh, I'm going to just we when all this
49:57
weird stuff started happening, uh, I
49:59
found a a coin purse on the ground where
50:03
one of the people had been knocked down
50:05
and then picked up.
50:08
Uh, and while I had it, I went to the
50:13
bookstore and I was looking for a book
50:15
that I haven't been able to find for a
50:16
while. And I couldn't order it because
50:18
every time I tried to pre-order it, it
50:19
just was like, "Oh, they haven't printed
50:20
anyone in just a lot of stuff kept kept
50:24
happening. I couldn't get it." And it
50:26
was there
50:29
on [snorts] the on the shelf.
50:31
And then the guy who we like Jeff who
50:35
was the the guy who we originally saw
50:38
get wildly lucky in a way. Um
50:43
we saw him walk by and so we we went to
50:46
give it back to him and he said, "Yeah,
50:49
that's that's that was mine." And he had
50:53
it when the girl suddenly started acting
50:56
weird. Uh can someone explain to me like
50:59
the Tiffany deal? Like I I I'm not great
51:01
from keeping track of people.
51:03
>> Tiffany's the most popular girl in
51:05
school and Jeff is the most unpopular
51:09
boy at school and now they're dating.
51:11
>> Yeah. And Jeff had said he had it when
51:14
that all started, but he obviously
51:15
dropped it afterwards.
51:18
And I had it and I got the book I
51:20
wanted.
51:22
>> Well, dear. And can I see the can I see
51:26
the bag?
51:27
>> No, he took it. We gave it back to him.
51:29
Oh,
51:30
>> yeah. We didn't know like I mean we
51:33
don't usually keep things that aren't
51:34
ours because it's not the right thing to
51:36
do. So, we were returning it to him. And
51:38
Tiffany was really nasty to me and she
51:40
usually isn't, but he was like really
51:43
happy to get the bag back, but also like
51:45
just kind of paying attention to her. It
51:47
was really weird.
51:49
>> And she kind of she she nods as you're
51:52
saying all this. Well, I don't know what
51:54
it is for sure, dears. But
51:58
I don't think it's the bag.
52:01
I think it's whatever was in the bag.
52:05
>> There wasn't anything in it when we
52:07
looked.
52:08
>> Yeah, it just smelled like summer, you
52:09
said.
52:10
>> Kind of smelled like here, I think.
52:12
Right. It kind of smelled incensey but
52:14
summery.
52:16
It was like
52:18
>> it was like a summer barbecue being
52:20
outside and the grass is freshly cut and
52:24
everyone's having a good day.
52:26
>> Like the promise
52:27
>> smelled like
52:28
>> like the smelled like the promise of
52:30
that which is to come.
52:32
>> Yeah, I guess.
52:36
>> The I don't know what was in the pouch,
52:38
but I can tell you that the pouch was
52:40
probably containing it
52:42
>> and now it's just out to do whatever it
52:44
wants to do.
52:46
There is a story about luck throughout
52:48
this town's history where some folks
52:52
would have miraculous luck. They'd out
52:55
of nowhere they'd become super fortunate
52:58
or, you know, their acne would clear up
53:01
or their hair would grow back or they'd
53:03
get 3 in taller
53:07
or they'd fall in love.
53:12
But something always bad happened to
53:15
them after
53:17
>> like a balance.
53:21
>> You can't be really lucky without being
53:22
really unlucky.
53:25
>> And she looks at the the painting on the
53:27
wall again.
53:29
Something like that.
53:35
>> It always was one person,
53:38
never more.
53:40
It would come and it would go and the
53:44
town like always would stop talking
53:46
about it.
53:52
>> So, it sounds like something bad is
53:54
going to come and happen to Jeff
53:56
>> and maybe uh
54:00
maybe car guy.
54:03
>> You you came up with the name Matt
54:05
>> and then I forgot it. Sorry, [laughter]
54:10
>> Marishka.
54:12
>> Who is Marisha?
54:14
>> Are they talking about it though? Cuz I
54:15
don't think they're talking about it.
54:19
>> I don't know. I mean, you
54:21
>> I mean, Mishka might just have gotten
54:23
like a dead relative. That might just It
54:25
doesn't necessarily have to be con, you
54:27
know, part of this. I'm just saying.
54:30
>> It is pretty lucky.
54:32
>> It's true. Rich old uncles die. That
54:34
that is a that's a real thing that
54:35
happens
54:36
>> if
54:38
but does everyone have a rich old uncle?
54:41
>> No.
54:42
>> I'm kind of surprised that that he's got
54:44
an uncle that wealthy that just let them
54:47
live in the kind of poverty they lived
54:49
in for a reason.
54:52
>> Yeah, I can't argue with that.
54:57
Dear, I'm going to tell you though, if
54:59
you if you go looking for this,
55:02
>> if you find it,
55:05
don't use it.
55:08
>> I mean, what if I did already use it?
55:10
Like,
55:10
>> you said that you you said the bag was
55:12
empty when you got it, right?
55:14
>> My was it just like some residue of it?
55:17
Like, I don't know. It just felt weird.
55:20
>> Again, I don't The bag isn't the the bag
55:22
isn't special. Not in the way you think
55:25
it is. So, the bag is like if you wanted
55:28
to keep a piece of kryptonite, you'd put
55:30
it in lead in like a lead sleeve or
55:32
something.
55:34
>> I have no idea what that is. [laughter]
55:37
>> Sorry. Uh, like
55:40
if you've got something that's dangerous
55:42
to touch, like if you had poison, you
55:45
put it in a special bottle so it doesn't
55:47
get you,
55:49
and maybe you put a sealer on it so
55:52
nobody would get it, right? Like that's
55:55
what they do with like, you know, with
55:57
like you you got an X-ray machine, the
55:59
the uh the the material that they use to
56:02
do the X-ray, they keep it in lead so it
56:06
doesn't get out and, you know, get
56:08
everybody around it.
56:11
I think I I think that's more of the
56:14
right of it. Yeah,
56:20
that's all I know. And again, there is
56:22
just there are just stories. They could
56:25
be the delusions of an old woman.
56:29
>> I mean,
56:31
>> stories stories have to come from
56:33
somewhere.
56:34
>> I mean, I'm sorry. There's just no way
56:36
that Tiffany would be going out with
56:38
Jeff. I just I know this sounds dumb,
56:41
but that that that is the weirdest thing
56:43
ever.
56:44
>> That is definitely true. It's definitely
56:45
true.
56:46
>> I'm sure Jeff has some kind of positive
56:48
quality. No, it's a Tiffany doesn't have
56:51
any positive qualities.
56:53
>> Yeah,
56:53
>> she got she got a Never mind. [laughter]
56:57
>> Yes, thank you for not saying that from
56:59
the 100-year-old woman. Not that she
57:00
hasn't heard it before. I just
57:06
>> All right, dear. Well,
57:09
I
57:11
just be careful, please.
57:13
>> We will. Thank you for helping.
57:17
Oh, don't thank me at last.
57:22
And she she kind of like wheels over to
57:24
to you and Jacob and she kind of like
57:26
puts a hand on each of your faces.
57:29
My god, you look you both look so much
57:32
like him.
57:37
>> I don't know if that's a good or a bad.
57:40
>> No, it actually works on you.
57:45
and she goes over to the uh dresser and
57:50
she opens up one of the lower drawers
57:51
and she starts rifling through a bunch
57:52
of old photos. Um, and she goes over to
57:56
you, Jacob, and she hands you one. Uh,
57:58
and it's a wedding photo and you see
58:03
your grandfather standing next to Mr.
58:06
heresy um like in the wedding party
58:11
uh and he looks the spinning image of
58:14
you at your age.
58:18
Yikes.
58:20
That is Dang. He was much bigger when I
58:23
knew him.
58:26
>> Time has a way of changing us all, boy.
58:29
>> Yeah,
58:29
>> but you take that with you. Something uh
58:33
I have I have a few copies of it. It's
58:35
fine. Thank you.
58:40
>> I go get out of here.
58:45
>> I mean, we we go unless anyone else has
58:48
another question. Ask her.
58:51
>> I'm busy like holding this picture
58:52
again. Like
58:53
>> it really does look like me. It
58:55
>> it is it is this spinning image of you.
58:57
Maybe a little buffer cuz you can tell
58:59
like it's a few years older. Like you're
59:01
you're what 16, 17?
59:03
>> I'm 15. 15. So, this is probably he's
59:07
probably 18, 19 in this photo.
59:09
>> Yeah, he he'd be broadened out, but
59:11
yeah.
59:12
>> Yeah, you can tell this is his hand. You
59:13
can see this the roughness of his hands.
59:15
You can see that he's been he's been a
59:17
sailor at this point for a while. Um, so
59:20
yeah.
59:24
So, where do you guys head off to after
59:26
Shady Acres here? What do you do?
59:28
>> I think as soon as we get outside, I
59:30
kind of look at everybody and I'm like,
59:31
I think we have to go to the fountain.
59:35
That's what I was kind of thinking, but
59:37
I don't I don't know what we'll find
59:39
there. It's like
59:41
>> Yeah. Wait. Yeah. Hold up. What are we
59:43
doing?
59:45
>> I don't know. That's the problem.
59:47
>> Okay.
59:48
>> I mean, we were trying to figure out
59:49
some history of the town and like
59:51
investigate like the rumors and stuff,
59:54
but there's only so much we can do. And
59:56
like now I'm kind of worried because she
59:58
said that like really bad stuff can
1:00:00
happen to people. And you know, Jeff's
1:00:03
not the most popular kid in school, but
1:00:04
he's also kind of nice to me when a lot
1:00:06
of other people just look at me and are
1:00:08
just like, you know, like everybody I'm
1:00:11
just a novelty, but he actually treats
1:00:13
me like I'm a human sometimes. So, like
1:00:17
I don't want to see anything bad happen
1:00:18
to him. And as much as Tiffany's been
1:00:20
really not great today, she's also been
1:00:23
nice to me in the past. Like
1:00:26
I don't want anybody to get hurt. So
1:00:28
maybe I just kind of want to go see
1:00:31
something.
1:00:33
>> Go see the pond or go see Jeff.
1:00:35
>> I want to go see the pond and see if
1:00:38
like maybe like
1:00:41
there's something like disturbed or dug
1:00:43
up or
1:00:44
>> I mean if the if the story is true the
1:00:46
dude drowned
1:00:47
>> in the middle of the street.
1:00:49
>> I mean one of the easiest things to do
1:00:51
would be to transport a body and dump
1:00:53
it. Although I don't know why you do
1:00:55
that, but I'm saying
1:00:56
>> I'm not really worried about his body.
1:00:59
I'm worried about like
1:01:01
>> Yeah, you dump a lot of bodies.
1:01:03
[laughter]
1:01:03
>> Not yet. It's not that complicated.
1:01:07
[snorts]
1:01:08
>> She just kind of looks Jenny just kind
1:01:10
of looks at you and it's just like, um,
1:01:12
okay.
1:01:13
>> Do you remember Do you remember uh David
1:01:16
uh Clemente? I said to Jenny
1:01:21
was a senior last year. Remember him?
1:01:25
I mean, maybe a little bit. Is he the
1:01:27
guy that was like really grumpy to me?
1:01:30
>> Yeah, that first time. Yeah.
1:01:34
>> Okay.
1:01:36
>> No, he isn't, is he?
1:01:39
>> No, he graduated.
1:01:41
>> No, he didn't.
1:01:43
And I just walk off.
1:01:45
>> That's weird.
1:01:45
>> Fountain, let's go.
1:01:48
and just go look around and see if like
1:01:49
anything's disturbed or something and
1:01:51
see if maybe we can figure out what's
1:01:52
going on.
1:01:53
>> I have a concern now. I have
1:01:56
>> someone's disturbed but yeah.
1:01:57
>> Yeah, I'm like really freaked out now
1:01:59
and I'm just like going to stick way
1:02:01
back behind everybody like immediately
1:02:03
avoiding being in front of my brother.
1:02:06
>> Fair enough. Uh, as you guys start
1:02:08
making your way towards uh back towards
1:02:10
Main Street and back towards the center
1:02:12
of town, um, I I will say you start to
1:02:17
notice maybe a little more weirdness has
1:02:20
been happening. Um, as again, it's
1:02:23
probably midday right around now. Again,
1:02:25
the party is probably a few hours away.
1:02:28
Um, who would you say was like the
1:02:31
shortest kid in your your class
1:02:34
>> aside from me? Jimmy, aside from you.
1:02:37
[laughter]
1:02:37
>> Yeah, but Grinny's an outlier.
1:02:40
>> I don't know. I think Jeff's probably
1:02:42
pretty sure. Jeff probably also has like
1:02:44
a younger sister or something that's in
1:02:46
like ninth grade.
1:02:48
>> One of the really young ninth grader. I
1:02:50
mean, well, I mean, if it's a middle and
1:02:51
high school, you've got a bunch of sixth
1:02:52
and seventh graders that are really, but
1:02:54
if you're looking at the high school,
1:02:55
it's
1:02:57
>> What's What's Chef's younger sister's
1:02:58
name?
1:03:00
>> Uh, Elizabeth.
1:03:02
>> All right. you see uh you do a double
1:03:08
take at first and and Jenny, you're
1:03:09
probably the first one to notice this.
1:03:11
Um you see what is apparently Elizabeth
1:03:16
walking with a bunch of
1:03:20
uh like athletes. Uh you know that she
1:03:24
always wanted to be uh a basketball
1:03:27
player, but she was super short. Um it
1:03:30
looks like she has grown like four or
1:03:33
five inches overnight and she's hanging
1:03:36
out with like the girls basketball team
1:03:39
as they're you know joking around and
1:03:42
laughing and like she's slaughtered
1:03:45
herself right into there. Um you see
1:03:50
uh a bunch of people like again in more
1:03:54
opulent clothing. uh you see uh
1:03:58
storefronts that have been long since
1:04:00
suffering
1:04:01
uh from you know we're at that era where
1:04:04
local shops are starting to like turn
1:04:07
down because we're starting to get into
1:04:08
big box store territory. Um but like
1:04:11
restaurants and stores are completely
1:04:13
revitalized. Out oftowners are in town
1:04:17
frequenting these places today. um
1:04:20
people you've never seen before spending
1:04:22
globs of money uh at the local diner, at
1:04:26
the the local clothing store. Um and you
1:04:30
know, you hear them talking about
1:04:31
they're so excited for the uh party
1:04:35
tonight at the celebration. Um again,
1:04:38
people you've never seen before and you
1:04:41
can't fathom why people would want to
1:04:43
come to uh New Novemberwood. of all
1:04:47
things, the 150th anniversary shouldn't
1:04:48
be that big of a deal, should it? Um,
1:04:52
and as you start as you start making
1:04:55
your way towards uh the center of town,
1:04:59
um you hear the first blood curdling
1:05:03
scream.
1:05:05
And that's where we're going to end our
1:05:06
session.
1:05:08
>> Oh no.
1:05:09
Uh oh.
1:05:11
>> I knew I should have worked f harder on
1:05:12
this. [laughter]
1:05:15
Uh but yeah, that's going to do it for
1:05:17
us for this episode, friends. Uh we're
1:05:21
going to be having one more after this
1:05:23
where we're going to get to the uh
1:05:25
climactic end game. Uh what will happen?
1:05:28
Will our our kids discover the mystery
1:05:31
and solve it in time? What is that blood
1:05:33
curling scream? When will the other shoe
1:05:35
drop? We'll find out next time.
