Elder Scrolls 6 is still in the works, so what are your hopes and dreams for its eventual release?
We recently heard yet another update promising that there is a team working hard on creating The Elder Scrolls 6, although there was nothing of substance beyond assuring us that it’s Bethesda’s “primary development focus.” After all this time, it’s reasonable to ask: what are you even hoping for from the sixth installment at this point?
You can pick your own way of expressing how long we’ve been waiting for the next chapter in The Elder Scrolls anthology. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is coming up on its 15th anniversary, which means that Skyrim is as old to us today as Super Mario 64 was when Skyrim came out. Kids starting second grade this fall are younger than the teaser trailer from 2018’s E3 event.
Honestly, all this time has left me a bit confused regarding exactly what I want out of TES6. It makes sense that we’ll visit a new province or two of Tamriel, with Hammerfell seeming to be the favorite among players who have been discussing potential settings for a decade and a half. Early on I was rooting for The Elder Scrolls 6: The Black Marsh, but at this point I don’t think the setting is going to matter to me as much as the chance to play it at all.
It think that what I want the most from another Elder Scrolls game is just the right amount of change all across the board. I wouldn’t be happy with Skyrim 2, with better graphics and a new setting. I wouldn’t be happy with a game that is a complete departure from the series that felt like a new title set against the backdrop of Tamriel. A huge part of my love for the series comes from this transition being done just right from Morrowind to Oblivion to Skyrim.
I’d love to see some new monsters, but it wouldn’t feel right to explore a new region and never run into a deaedroth or clannfear. I hate when things like the combat system stray too far from previous installments, but after fifteen years there are plenty of new features to incorporate there that could make for a nice balance of old and new. It would be great to see more lore without trying to accomplish something too ambitious like tying the whole universe together into one all-important quest line.
Of course, no TES6 wishlist would be complete without asking for a new lockpicking minigame.
So what are you looking for when it comes to The Elder Scrolls 6? What would the perfect follow-up to Skyrim have to offer if you had a say?
