The hunt for Jimothy officially concludes, so here’s how to acquire your very own stumpy raccoon
The search has ended for the world’s most famous spinally-deformed raccoon… in Azeroth. Among Midnight’s patch 12.1 content are several new companion pets (some more secret than others), and the World of Warcraft Secret Finding Discord channel has been buzzing with leads all week as sleuthing players scoured Silvermoon City for Jimothy himself.
If you’ve spent the summer on the side of the Moon that doesn’t get any internet, you might not be familiar with Jimothy. This curiously proportioned but otherwise healthy Seattle raccoon went viral after a video of his disturbingly endearing gait showed up online in mid-July. Over the past few weeks the internet has done its weird old thing and turned Jimothy into a mascot of sorts.
It was barely more than a week before the World of Warcraft team responded to an apparent deluge of requests with a teaser of an in-game Jimothy scuttling happily around Zul’Aman. There were a few more hints in developer interviews and teased models, but the launch of patch 12.1 came and went without access this horizontally challenged trash panda.
Officially appearing in-game as J’imothy, the adorable omnivore’s pet journal entry describes how he encountered trouble while digging through trash in Silvermoon City. As usual, the WoW Secret Finding Discord channel activated and quickly scoured the Blood Elf capital.
No in-game clues were found initially, but datamining is one of the arrows in the secret-finder’s quiver. Several clues were discovered hidden in the game’s code in the form of spells and items that suggested our favorite ring-tailed chum got a bit too curious rummaging through magical garbage and ended up trapped in some sort of arcane prison. It was confirmed a few days after the 12.1 patch went live that J’imothy was not yet available in-game.
It was Thursday’s Race to World First where companion pet enthusiasts got their next glimpse of J’imothy bumbling around Silvermoon as part of several content creator’s streams. By mid-afternoon, a hotfix went live that activated the elusive raccoon and made him available for capture.
There are three locations around Silvermoon that you might stumble upon J’imothy trapped in an arcane prison as an Ensorcelled Cryptid. He might be inside the dwelling on the northwest outskirts of the city past the university, in the northeast quadrant the city (Lithiel’s Landing) under a bridge, or at the very end of Murder Row just above its label on the map.
Once you locate the unfortunately trapped critter, you’ll simply need to click on the magical barrier surrounding him and channel a spell while avoiding falling orbs. Once released, you’ll receive a Stubby Whistle which will add this compact buddy to your arsenal of oddly-shaped pets.
