No, I am not watching the Captain America: Civil War trailer

Everyone I know may be talking about Marvel’s just-released Captain America: Civil War trailer, but I’m staying away.

Let me preface this: I am a huge Marvel fan. When Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, I watched the 28-hour movie marathon version that showed every Marvel movie leading up to the main event (with the help of a lot of Red Bull and chocolate covered espresso beans). But Age of Ultron, unfortunately, killed my interest in Civil War.

While Age of Ultron was a fun action movie, it featured such a parade of character cameos and nods to Marvel canon that it felt like it forgot to get around to the actual story. The Age of Ultron felt more like the 20 Minutes of Ultron with Ultron himself an easily vanquished villain — quite a shame considering the spot-on casting of James Spader and the very excellent trailers Age of Ultron had itself.

But Ultron made a staggering $1.4 billion at the box office, and it seems like a formula Marvel is set on following. Age of Ultron featured 16 major Marvel heroes (with references to many we didn’t get a chance to see on-screen) and with Civil War already listing a cast of 14 major heroes (with more actors in yet-unannounced roles), it feels like too much. I’m just not interested in a runway show of superheroes where each one walks on stage, kicks someone in the face, says a witty one-liner, and then walks off again. More characters and more in-jokes does not a great movie make.

Still, I understand that many of you feel otherwise. I’ve heard over and over that the trailer is great and I ought to watch it… but I just can’t work up the enthusiasm.

But you’re not me, and for those of you who are excited about Marvel’s next mega-movie event, here’s the trailer you’ve all been waiting for.

The film itself is coming out on May 6, 2016, so you still have a ways to wait — and probably plenty more trailers to enjoy.
