The Queue: I’m writing Liz’s Queue tomorrow

Sometimes y’all get upset if we don’t tell you up front, so there it is. Tomorrow Liz is gonna be traveling and so I’m writing her Queue.

I’m also writing my Queue right now, so here we go.

ROXXII THE THUNDERING

I think one of the most interesting things I’ve ever heard is Brian Kibler talk about how much of a pain the WoW TCG was to design because of the in-game loot cards. He was a lead designer on the TCG and said that the corporate overlords wanted to add the drops so that WoW players would want them. But the TCG team then decided to make the loot cards bad in-game so that people hoarding them for WoW loot didn’t ruin the play experience for people who wanted to actually play the TCG.

That is actually very interesting.

My only TCG related fact is that one of the cards in the game was my first Tauren Warrior. His full name is ‘Vornathar’ and he’s a Draenei now, because time makes fools of us all I guess.

ARTHONOS

Some context for my question: I had a linked video where the creator mentioned that he was certain he caught covid while traveling to the hands on event at Nintendo of Europe, but joked that it was worth it. As eager as I am to play Tears of the Kingdom, I felt like this was a bit of a steep price to pay.

It’s weird to me how casual people are about a disease that killed over a million people in the United States alone and which is known to have serious, lingering effects that can reoccur and cause damage that will shorten your life expectancy dramatically even if you survive it.

My wife has a heart condition. Me bringing home COVID could well kill her. And I have a host of issues that COVID would likely exacerbate and potentially kill me as well. So because nobody seems to want to take the chance of transmitting this thing seriously, I’m still forced to mask up and try and avoid public spaces as much as possible.

“I went to this Nintendo hand’s on and got COVID” would happen with a lot less frequency if people would just wear masks in public, instead of acting like it’s curtailing their liberty. Don’t even get me started on how we know that wearing masks keeps facial recognition software from having as easy a time identifying people and why I think that’s had an impact on why governments aren’t really taking the steps needed to keep people safe.

But that’s just me, someone who has realized they will never see a movie in public again, or a concert, or anything because the risk is just too high.

ENO, RUN AWAY

I still need to read that Doomsday Clock arc. I heard good things about it.

I had stopped reading comics at that point because of the horrible New 52 stuff.

Apparently Doomsday Clock jumpstarted the “Rebirth” relaunch in 2016 that did away with the New 52 stuff. Right now I decided to start catching up with the “Infinite Frontier” stuff that came in 2021 that was another relaunch (though more like an “expansion” to the Rebirth stuff) but maybe someday I’ll go back to the Rebirth stuff.

Rebirth worked as a “Okay, yeah, we screwed up with that whole New52 thing” that brought back the status quo for a lot of characters that were confusing as heck thanks to the continuity reset from Flashpoint, but Doomsday Clock is, in my opinion, the most boring slog of a comic book I’ve read in years and is absolutely not worth your time.

First off, there’s the fact that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons would absolutely own the rights to the characters and story of Watchmen if DC hadn’t deliberately kept the book in print just to rob them out of said rights, which has always sat poorly with me.

But even outside of that, the entire premise is a bit wonky on the face of it, and even worse, unlike other wonky premises that ended up working due to a variety of factors like good writing or amazing art — or both, in some cases like Crisis on Infinite Earths —  there’s nothing about Doomsday Clock that is worth the money you’ll spend getting the story to read it, or even worth the mental effort of reading it.

We didn’t need a story that explores what happens after Watchmen that badly, but we saw with the HBO series that there were certainly ways to make that story a creatively crafted one. Doomsday Clock does not bother to do that. It reads like someone’s bad Superman/Dr. Manhattan fanfiction that never bothers to get to the point and also leaves out the stuff people read slashfic for in the first place.

Yes, I am saying it would be better if this was just smut, because at least then it wouldn’t be tedious. Okay, less tedious.

I do recommend a lot of the Rebirth titles. I don’t recommend Doomsday Clock unless you’re just super into reading stories that end up taking several issues to go nowhere at all.

TELWAR

TTRPG stuff-

New OneDND/5.5/whatever UA for barbarians, fighters, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards dropped. It’s 50 pages.

https://media.dndbeyond.com…

For PF2, a remastered edition is coming in November, removing OGL, sanitizing a few monsters and items from OGL, and (big one) removing alignment.

https://gizmodo.com/paizo-p…

Note: I have written up the Weapon changes from that UA — should go live sooner or later, y’al know how it is — and I’m working on a post rounding up the biggest single change each class got so that folks can find a nice summary and we can update it as it goes.

Haven’t written up the Pathfinder news but I do think it’s very cool, I’m hoping it will have the ORC so I can decide if I want to start self pubbling some Pathfinder things. I’ve wanted to write up a bunch of non-dinosaur prehistoric critters like Inostrancevia forever.

Okay, that’s the Queue for today. Remember, I’m writing up Liz’s Queue tomorrow. So don’t get upset if you decide you have to ask a question only Liz could answer and then I’m there, because I warned you.
