What to wishlist this weekend while you’re playing World of Warcraft’s The War Within
Happy Friday, Watchers, and welcome to launch week for The War Within! Knowing that we are all delving into Khaz Algar this weekend, here’s some games you should wishlist! You know, for when you need to play something else to prevent monitor burn-in.
Release of the week: Crypt Custodian
Crypt Custodian is a metroidvania/Zelda-like that has you playing as a cat cleaning up the afterlife. Created by Kyle Thompson, known for indie metroidvania hit Islets, his new game has you playing as a cat named Pluto – who happens to have just died (oh no) and has been sentenced by the Afterlife Guardian Kendra to clean the afterlife forever (oh noooo).
Cute characters with great interactions, charming artwork, and a well defined vision are what you get with this indie release.
Get Crypt Custodian for $17 on PC at Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox or PlayStation.
Release of the Week 2: Gundam Breaker 4
Gundam Breaker 4 has returned to what made Gundam Breaker 3 so great: you build your Gundam, you take it into battle and beat up enemy mechs, they drop parts, you pick them up and after that mission ends you return to your inventory and upgrade/rebuild. As for combat, if you’ve ever played a Dynasty Warriors game, you’re fairly familiar with what you’re in for — button-mashing action combat where you’re spawned into an arena with an objective (kill this enemy mech) and a bunch of grunt suits to destroy. The added diorama mode is great to scratch that itch of posing the model you just created into the best anime pose you can think of, especially if you plan on making some sort of mecha monstrosity that we all know you yearn for.
Get Gundam Breaker 4 for $60 on PC at Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. Sorry friends, no Xbox release on this one.
Steal of a deal: Death’s Door
Continuing on with this week’s trend of cleaning up the afterlife as an animal, might I suggest Death’s Door? Another indie Zelda-like, this time you find yourself as a crow who works for the Reaping Commission, sent off on an assignment to reap the soul of a powerful monster who won’t pass on. Of course, things don’t go as planned and you’ll need to deal with puzzles, secrets, boss monsters and the lure of trying to find just one more secret before bed.
Death’s Door is another game that just oozes charm, and even after defeating the final boss there’s an entire endgame mystery to solve if you want to get that True Ending (and believe me, you do). Besides, you get to play as a crow, and we all know they’re the best.
Get Death’s Door for $5 on PC at Steam and PlayStation.
Bonus round: Backpack Hero
Backpack Hero has you playing as one of multiple animal heroes (I’m seeing a trend today) attempting to make their way through a dungeon. While the premise is familiar, the execution is different: your inventory, and how you lay things within it, changes how weapons, armor and magic work. Place a bow on the left and a series of arrows directly next to it? When you fire the bow, it fires each arrow and whatever effects they may get from touching. Armor may only be effective depending on where you place it in your inventory (helmets at the top, boots at the bottom), which can be a challenge in the default 3×3 inventory… but quickly you are able to upgrade, and change the layout how you see fit.
Try Backpack Hero‘s demo for free on PC on Steam and pick it up for $14. Also available for $20 on Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation.
Now tell us, Watchers — what are you NOT playing this weekend? Share in the comments below, and we’ll feature your new interest in next week’s round-up!
