Our weekend gaming recommendations are all about nostalgia, with remasters galore

Our gaming plans for this weekend are fueled by nostalgia, and our game recommendations for the week follow that vein, from remasters to light-hearted LEGO remakes. So if you’re looking for something new to keep yourself occupied this weekend, here are our game recommendations.

New release: Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

The awkwardly titled HD-2D Remake upscales this 1988 classic while keeping things charmingly pixelated. Dragon Quest 3 is actually the prequel to both Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest 2, but being the third game in the series it brought many advances, like recruitable party members, classes (called vocations), elemental resistances, and being able change the order of where your party members sit. Taking that a step further, the remake adds a new vocation: the monster wrangler! Recruit your party, travel the world, and finish your father’s quest to banish the Archfiend Baramos.

Get Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake for $60 on Steam or your console of choice.

New release: LEGO Horizon Adventures

Horizon Zero Dawn may be one of the most gorgeous action games I’ve ever played, and developer Guerrilla Games teamed up with Studio Gobo to create this LEGO version that retells the story of Zero Dawn in the typical LEGO game fashion: full of humor, charm, and wit. Play as Aloy, Varl, Teersa, or Erend to overcome the challenges of the world, while being able to swing back to the village of Mother’s Heart to redecorate when you need to relax. Co-op this time also includes multiplayer, but do note that this game requires a PlayStation Network account.

Get LEGO Horizon Adventures for $60 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and on PlayStation.

New release: Warcraft 1 and 2 Remastered

Coming absolutely out of nowhere during Warcraft Direct event this week, Blizzard announced remastered versions of both Warcraft 1 and 2 that would be available right now. Both games have been remastered to allow for HD sprite based art, modernized controls, and for Warcraft 2 — multiplayer! Warcraft 2 also comes with the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion, making it the full package.

Get Warcraft 1 Remastered for $10 on Battle.net, Warcraft 2 Remastered for $15 at Battle.net, or the Warcraft Battle Chest with 1, 2, and 3 for $40 on Battle.net.

Just updated: Warcraft 3: Reforged

Warcraft 3: Reforged didn’t exactly have the best launch in 2022; it was missing many of the features the original game had, some of the announced features had been scrapped, and it was plagued by bugs. But that’s all behind us now, as patch 2.0 just launched with a ton of improvements, including HD versions of many of the classic units, buildings, heroes, and icons. Players can now swap between the HD versions and the originals, but can pick and choose what they want. Additionally, changes have been made to the XP ladder in ranked, and in general the game is much more polished.

Get Warcraft 3: Reforged for $29.99 at Battle.net.
