What are your favorite little moments in The War Within?
Sometimes it’s the little moments in gaming that are the icing on the cake. Sure, The War Within has packed been plenty of major developments, epic standoffs, and grand scenes involving what seems like every character in twenty years of lore. At the same time, it’s often the easter eggs within side quests or the interactions between your own character and Azeroth that make you stop and smile.
One of the things I was most looking forward to in Khaz Algar was my first glimpse of Beledar within the Hallowfall zone. Coming through the doorway from the Ringing Deeps, I was…well, not unimpressed certainly, but it wasn’t quite the breathtaking moment I was imagining. I feel like I may have over-hyped this moment in my mind before launch day, and there’s no way it could live up to my expectations. Having Beledar shift on me while I’m questing around Hallowfall, however, was definitely one of those unexpected atmosphere features that makes you remember a zone for a long time.
On the other hand, my first view of the City of Threads within Azj-Kahet definitely was impressive. I’m not sure if I had considered all of the glimpses of endless nerubian architecture from afar to be more akin to concept art, but the first time I changed my view and the whole city was visible from across the entire zone was absolutely something awesome.
At this point we’ve completed thousands of quests for every manner of NPC that inhabits our universe, but the Alyza Bowblaze series in Hallowfall really stuck with me. When you approach her in Mereldar, she asks you to recover her teddy bear from her former home near the Hungering Pool. Once you arrive in the vicinity of her demolished house, she appears and follows you around. Using her dialogue options to ask how she got there so fast, she responds, “I stowed away on your mount, obviously.” I’m not sure a single line from a quest-giver has ever made my jaw physically drop before.
Sometimes the best little moments are brief laugh or throw away one-liner. I’m far from the only player who was less than thrilled to learn that much of this expansion would take place battling a whole slew of different spiders, spider-people, people-spiders, and other horrible things with an unnecessary number of legs. And yet, when one nerubian addressed me as “my appendage-deficient friend,” I couldn’t help but grin.
Perhaps my favorite category of these little moments comes in the form of an appearance of those recurring minor characters that always seem to pop up no matter what the circumstances. I was delighted to be exploring the passageways of Dornogal and stumble upon a game of Hearthstone between Valeera Sanguinar and a mostly-disrobed Millhouse Manastorm. Even Bob the Bartender was there hanging out. As a mage, Valeera offered me a Tome of Polymorph: Mosswool from her winnings. As for Millhouse himself…he doesn’t seem to want to talk about it.
So what have been you favorite little moments from The War Within? Which quest lines or character interactions or easter eggs left you glad that you decided to explore that particular corner of Khaz Algar?
