Marvel Rivals Spring Festival event launches today, adding a new Lucioball-like event

Marvel Rivals is the latest hero shooter from developer NetEase, and like Overwatch 2 and Overwatch before it, appears to be engaging with seasonal holidays. The Spring Festival starts on January 23, adding the Clash of Dancing Lions game mode and a number of new skins.
I guess I should talk about the elephant in the room first. Marvel Rivals is frequently compared to Overwatch, for better or worse. To be honest, any new hero shooter will probaby get that same comparison, but here there is a big similarity between the Clash of Dancing Lions and something you might know in Overwatch as Lúcioball. Both are Rocket League-inspired soccer games in which teams of players work together to attempt to score on their opponents’ nets. There are a few differences here. Instead of everyone playing as the exact same hero (all Lúcio) there are three heroes to choose from: Iron Fist, Black Widow, or Star-Lord, a selection of heroes whose movement abilities all play well with and against each other. The ball itself instead of being oversized like in Rocket League or Lúcioball is instead proportional to the heroes. We’ll need to see it in action before we can truly tell how similar the modes really are.
The event also brings a number of skins with it, but not all of them are pay to acquire. The event allows players to complete tasks for various rewards, including the Lion’s Mane costume for Star-Lord.
Further details on the event are pretty light, but it’s exciting to see the developers adding seasonal events outside of normal game content. If you’ve been on the fence about trying Marvel Rivals, now might be the time: the game is free to play on all platforms, and events like this are a great way to get your feet wet and see if you like the game.
Update: Marvel Rivals Spring Festival starts on January 23, and will run through February 13th.
