How to use the Turbulent Timeways event to level your alts in record time

Turbulent Timeways is back, and that means that leveling alts gets a supercharge until the event ends on February 24. You still have a few more weeks to max out all those characters you’ve had sitting at level 71 since the first week of The War Within or try out a new class by blazing to level 80 faster than ever before

The event consists of seven straight weeks of Timewalking Dungeons, when characters above level 10 can use the Dungeon Finder to queue into a random dungeon from one of World of Warcraft’s past expansions. You can find all of the details and the schedule of which era of Azeroth’s history we’ll be visiting in our overview article.

The key to squeezing the most levels out of Turbulent Timeways lies in the experience buffs that are awarded after the completion of each Timewalking dungeon. Any character that completes one dungeon will get Knowledge of the Timeways, a 2-hour buff that increases experience earned from killing monsters and completing quests by 5%. It will stack to 10% after the second then 15% after the third dungeon completed with the buff active.

Whenever you complete a Timewalking dungeon with one of these buffs, it gets refreshed to its full 2 hour duration. If you earn four stacks of Knowledge of the Timeways, it transforms into Mastery of the Timeways, which grants a whopping 30% experience boost for 3 full hours. These buffs do not tick down or disappear when you log off, meaning that you can switch up which character you’re leveling without needing to start back at the beginning of the buff cycle.

Warband Mentored Leveling gives up to an additional 25% boost to experience gains if you’re already an alt-aholic, and from February 2 – 8 you can visit the Darkmoon Fair to tack on another 10% boost. These buffs are also pretty wide-reaching, so you don’t need to stick with running the same dungeons over and over: you can take that 30% bonus out into the world and quest through your favorite zone. Just keep an eye on your Mastery of the Timeways to be sure it doesn’t run out — queue up once more if it’s low to refresh it to the full 3 hour duration.

Once you hit 80 on a given character, don’t immediately hang up your timewalking boots. Archivist Frithrun at the Dornogal command table will offer a weekly quest at max level to complete 5 Timewalking dungeons. The reward is a Cache of Nerubian Treasures with an item in the 610-619 range, which will be useful for taking your newly leveled characters on our upcoming vacation in Undermine.
