This week’s free game on the Epic Games Store is Mortal Shell

Mortal Shell makes for a interesting twist on the Soulslike genre, and I know I’m interested in literally any game I can get for free ninety-nine. Here’s the rundown for this week’s freebie from the Epic Games Store.

Mortal Shell‘s unique hook is right in the name. You play as a weird ghost guy which really has no shot of survival, unless you possess the body of one of four (five, with DLC) different heroes who have shuffled off their mortal coils. Each mortal shell has their own unique perks and minuses, and each can be upgraded to deepen their differences further. While you may find one or another of these heroes to be your favorite, you may need to switch them up to better take on the myriad of challenges you’ll face. And make no mistake — they are quite challenging, as is tradition for Soulslikes.

Compared to other Soulslike games, Mortal Shell is considerably shorter, which for some could be a plus and others a minus. Between the price tag and how much it’s just a love letter to the genre, it’s a perfect title to take for a test spin to see whether the Soulslike genre is for you.
