Ride on a train, solve crimes (as a duck!), start a new life and type for your life this week in games!

It’s a holiday weekend here in the United States, but the video game train doesn’t stop. Speaking of trains, this week we’re going to cover one of my most anticipated sequels in some time: Monster Train 2! This week we’ll also be covering an amazing detective who just so happens to be a duck (Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping), an Animal Crossing meets Dragon Quest Builders 2-type title (Fantasy Life i), and last but certainly not least, a free Warhammer 40,000 game that is extremely reminiscent of Typing of the Dead (Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Words of Vengeance).
Come ride the train: Monster Train 2
Monster Train was a smashing success in the rogue-like deck-builder genre when it came out in 2016, and Monster Train 2 shows that developer Shiny Shoe still has it almost a decade later. The forces of Hell pushed back the attack of the Angels in the first game, and this time we’re taking the fight to the Heavens — literally. However, something even more nefarious is at hand, forcing the Angels and Demons to have to team up to save everything! Monster Train 2 has you starting with two factions: the Angels and surprisingly, Dragons — but as you continue through the game you will unlock additional factions with their own special cards and abilities. Let me tell you, if you thought Monster Train or Slay the Spire were tough, Monster Train 2 certainly has shown it’s got hands.

Duck yeah: Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping
One thing Blizzard Watch readers may not know is that I love ducks — they are one of my favorite animals. I also love detective stories, the more silly the better (I’m a big fan of The Dresden Files). So let me tell you, when I came across Duck Detective, I was thrilled.
You take on the role of Detective Eugene McQuacklin, a down-on-his-luck, bread-addicted detective who has gone on vacation to try and get away, only to find that he’s stuck solving mysteries with a new companion. The Duck Detective games are smooth, easy romps that take about 3 hours to complete; that said, they’re full of witty humor, great voice acting, and the stories in Ghost of Glamping are stand-alone so you can start here. Duck yeah!

The game that steals time: Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time
Fantasy Life i calls itself a “slow-life RPG,” a term that doesn’t make a ton of sense without explanation: you are an adventurer who set out with a archaeologist and his team, finding a desert island that a dragon fossil was pointing towards, but of course you also find a message begging for you to save the world. Of course. Fantasy Life i has you pick “lives” (think classes in other RPGs) which give you abilities — the Paladin, for example, is a combat class; the Cook well, cooks, etc. — with your ultimate goal being to restore the island to its proper glory and, of course, saving the world. Craft houses, terraform the land, and decorate everything how you’d like — or explore the island as you see fit.

Typing for the Emperor: Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Words of Vengeance
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a boomer shooter taking things back to the old school DOOM feel. Words of Vengeance is technically just a playable promo game made to promote Boltgun 2‘s announcement, but being as it came out for free and it’s silly enough, I wanted to bring it to everyone’s attention. Vaguely reminiscent of Typing of the Dead, Words of Vengeance has you playing through a short (~30ish minutes) campaign where you take on the role of Space Marine Malum Caedo, purging the Forge World Graia from the forces of Chaos… but with a twist. Instead of left clicking your heart’s content to deal with the enemies, you have to type out words to deal with the threats — so dust the crumbs out of your keyboard, crack your knuckles, and get to typing.
Short, sweet and to the point, this is a great way to settle the uncertainty of what to play late on a Friday night.
