All the other new announcements from gamescom we’re excited about this week
It’s Friday again and that usually means it’s New Video Game Time with Chris. However, this week was gamescom, so I’ve got the hottest game announcements from the event and which games we have our eye on going forward.
It’s about time: Hollow Knight: Silksong
For those not in the know, Hollow Knight was a 2017 Metroidvania game with a lot of similarities to Dark Souls, mostly in the difficulty and the fact that you lost your currency upon death. Made by Team Cherry, a small indie studio from Australia, the game took the internet by storm — not bad for a title that was part of the early Kickstarter indie game boom (where it made $57,000). An absolutely extensive map, tons of abilities, neat characters and gorgeous art made this title extremely popular at launch, and even now it’s one of the highest ranked Metroidvanias alongside other titles like Super Metroid. While the initial title did spur three DLC, a fourth was announced featuring Hornet, a side character in the initial game that was both cool and mysterious. That announcement was made in February 2019.

It’s been SIX YEARS: Hollow Knight: Silksong
So it’s been six years, what does that mean? Well, the world was hit by COVID-19 (yeah it has been less than a decade, sorry to remind you) and while many folks were forced into lock down, the Adelaide-based team actually still managed to spend time together due to Australia’s absolutely rigorous COVID protocols. Of course, nothing came out of COVID unscathed, and it wasn’t until June of 2022 that Xbox announced Silksong would be available “within the next 12 months.” While Team Cherry didn’t comment on this, 2022 came and went and we had no new information other than the studio was still plugging away.

It’s gonna be buggy: Hollow Knight: Silksong
While we don’t know a ton about Silksong’s new locale, we did know that it’s a new kingdom entirely. We also know that there’s over 40 bosses, over 200 brand new enemies, and all sorts of brand new surprises in store. This, of course, says nothing about having our new protagonist (Hornet), who plays different than the Knight did in the original game. Thankfully, some changes have been made within Silksong to make the game slightly less punishing — using a secondary weapon now no longer costs the same resources that you heal from, for starters — but everything else in store is a mystery so far.

Bapanada: Hollow Knight: Silksong
This is an awful lot of words to tell everyone that I am super excited for this game. Ya’ll should know by now I very rarely make a joke post (though if you know me on Discord you know I have Big Dad Energy), but the truth is that I’ve been awaiting this release like everyone else, clown nose and wig on every time we expected an announcement. That said, we finally have a release date: September 4, 2025. So with that said, if you like Metroidvania games, or like the challenge of a good 2D action title, you should definitely check out the original Hollow Knight if you haven’t yet. Oh, and read Jason’s awesome article about what exactly took Team Cherry so long to get this thing out the door.
