Doomblade is this week’s free game from the Epic Games Store

This week the Epic Games Store is giving away a standard, but excellent Metroidvania, Doomblade, for free.

Doomblade is a bog standard — but quite well-reviewed — Metroidvania. You play as Gloom Girl. You find a magic sword, The Doomblade. Together you have to find your way out, and defeat the demons which are keeping the Doomblade imprisoned, in part by uncovering new skills to unlock new areas, and defeating bosses with complicated abilities using your Doomblade.

If you’re into Metroidvanias, or even barely aware of them, you may realize this is all but the definition of a game within that genre. As such, if you’re not a Metroidvania fan, this likely won’t be a game for you. If you are into Metroidvanias, this is a worthy entry into the category, but it may feel very samey to play, compared to others you’ve already played. Using a sword to defeat a tentacle boss while dodging energy projectiles is both weirdly specific and yet fairly expected for a Metroidvania.

But, even if this won’t be your favorite, it’s still free, so you may as well grab it while you can.
