Upgrade crest caps have been removed, so you can now grind crests (and upgrades) as much as you want

The cap on upgrade crests has been removed from Midnight Season 1, earlier than we expected. In more recent seasons of World of Warcraft, we’ve seen the cap on upgrade crests removed as seasons approach their end, as a way of helping folks still trying to clear content get over that item level hump, and to help folks looking to play and gear new alts easily upgrade that gear in preparation for the next season. In The War Within, this accompanied the so-called “Turbo Boost” at the end of each season, and came along with things like allowing items to be upgraded a couple of extra times.

Perhaps because of the fact that the Turbo Boost has been replaced by the Voidforge this season, or maybe triggered by the closing of the Mythic March on Quel’Danas Hall of Fame, Blizzard dropped a small post this morning just to say that the crest cap (for this season, anyway) is no more.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t a removal of the cap on how many crests you can get from certain activities — for example, Bountiful Delves will still only give you a certain number of Myth-track crests per week, even after this change. This is strictly about the cap that keeps you from getting more than a certain number of crests over the course of the season, which has been going up every week. That limit is now blown wide open and you can use repeatable activities like Mythic+ or the crest upgrade NPCs to accumulate as many crests as you care to farm up.

Whatever the reason, this will be welcome news to people who keep bumping into the crest limit when trying to upgrade gear — whether that’s one of the reasons above, or just normally. (It’s me: I’m people.) It has been very easy to bump into crest cap limitations and find yourself stuck on the amount of upgrades you could get per week; despite the removal of a secondary currency for gear upgrades, the crest cap itself has kept upgrades pretty constrained. Removing the crest cap will come as a welcome change to anyone who still has pieces they’d like to upgrade, perhaps to max out a trinket or weapon to use an Ascendant Voidcore on it, or to accumulate the necessary crests to craft an item to its maximum potential.
