What has been you favorite little detail from Midnight so far?
There’s been plenty of big-picture content in Midnight so far: major plot developments, new game modes, more types of Elves than you can shake a Void-Touched Battle Baton at — but sometimes it’s nice to slow way down and appreciate the tiny little details that give Azeroth its flavor and make it seem like a bustling, living world.
The whole expansion has been chock full of callbacks, fun moments, and mini-suprises that really make you appreciate the folks who put so much work and love into creating the game. Eversong Woods in particular has hit a lot of long-time players right in the nostalgia-bone. Realizing that the Magister I was helping with a book recovery quest was the same NPC that I helped recover a book in the same area 17 years ago (back when he was an Apprentice) was but one of many smile-inducing moments.
Sometimes these details last for more than a fleeting minute. The experience of fighting off ghost invaders in Zul’Aman and realizing that the ghosts represented an actual raid of World of Warcraft players from back in patch 2.3 was quite unique. I had to go back and play through that one multiple times to make sure I didn’t miss any gems, like the spectral Warrior bemoaning their repair costs (some things never change).
My favorite example of this kind of little detail had nothing to do with nostalgia at all. Wandering around Murder Row in Silvermoon City, I came across a series of flyers posted to the wall. One of them assured a cheating ex that they could find their stuff in the harbor. Sure enough, as I explored the western section of Silvermoon’s port, I came acrosss a floating patch of debris along with a few already-sunken belongings.
The best part about these little details is that there’s almost always another one that you could stumble across at any moment. Just last night I opened a treasure in Voidstorm labeled “Half-Digested Viscera,” fully expecting to pick up some Voidlight Marl or Coffer Key Shards. It was another daschund. I was delighted.
These small moments and out-of-the-way details aren’t the main reason I keep playing World of Warcraft, but they certainly make me consider my time on Azeroth well-spent. So what has been your favorite little detail from Midnight thus far?
