This week the Epic Games Store is giving away The Ouroboros King and Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks for free
Every week the Epic Games Store gives away a game or two for free. This week, we get new free games which are offbeat twists on classic formulas and genres.
- The Ouroboros King
- Release Date: February 27, 2023
- Game Type: chess roguelike (yes, seriously)
- POV: 3rd person
- Party: Single Player
- DLC: None
This is one of the wackiest concepts I’ve ever seen in a game, despite the fact that it is a combination of two well-worn genres, and it is in no way trying to be wacky. It takes chess, and makes it a roguelike. I am not much of a chess lad but even I recognize the potential for chaos here.
If you thought the movement map knights was ridiculous or the queen is BS, this probably won’t be a game you’ll enjoy.
- Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks
- Release Date: June 11, 2025
- Game Type: racing, vehicular combat
- POV: 3rd person, over the shoulder
- Party: online PVP
- DLC: Just the soundtrack
Believe me, I understand the role and purpose branding plays in marketing games, but it seems like a huge mismatch to emblazon the 40K title on this racing game. I suppose the 40K setting is rather industrial — it certainly would make more sense than putting this scenario in, say, The Elder Scrolls. But in examining the gameplay further, this is less a straight up racing game, and more like a racing brawler. It’s not Forza, it’s Mad Max. You can create tracks or battlefields and upload them, in addition to just racing (and chaingunning) your orky heart out.
