The Queue: What a storm

It’s Storm Watch time, and oh boy have we been getting hit by a big rainstorm. It’s been about a week of off-and-on rain, and all weekend, some steady, hard rain has left the city and surrounding areas in a rainfall/flooding warning. Sadly, no truly epic thunder and lightning, but maybe that’s coming next week.

While I go invest in some sandbags, and a new bathing suit, it’s time for our daily question and answer column — The Queue!

RED TOLD ME LONG AGO THERE’S A CALM BEFORE THE STORM

q4tq: do you think Arugal liked arugula?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say no. The ancient types thought that it had some aphrodisiac properties, and I don’t think a disgraced archmage winds up in a place like Shadowfang Keep if he had a nice person to keep him occupied. That’s some real I hate the world, and it’s awfulness type behavior.

Plus, the whole undead thing, their diet doesn’t seem to have a lot of leafy greens in it anyway. Maybe he could use it as a garnish.

Now, if we were talking mushrooms, I bet Arugal would love some agaricus mushrooms. (Yes, I googled mushrooms that start with the letter a and found one that was close to his name.)

WHEN IT’S OVER, SO THEY SAY IT’LL RAIN A SUNNY MUSEDMOOSE

Q4tQ: what stuff in games do you feel compelled to do, even if there’s no good reason? Bonus points if it’d actually be a hassle.

Asking because for some reason, the FFIV pixel remaster has a thing that tells you how many treasure chests and hidden items there are in each area, and I’m resisting the urge to go back to the game’s second dungeon and find the three chests I missed.

I am also a sucker for lists of things to collect. It’s one thing to tell me that there are 17 hidden treasure chests out in the world, but if you give me a subzone list that says that there are three of the hidden treasure chests kind of close to me right this very second, I’m way more likely to spend a bunch of time trying to hunt down those treasure chests.

Borderlands 4 had both the lists per zone of common collectible items and a much harder-to-complete hidden tracker for clicking on over 200 bobble heads across the game — guess which one I didn’t do! Even if I was feeling masochistic enough to go bobble head hunting, which often involved climbing annoying things or hidden areas, no way was I doing it with no way of being able to tell if I got a particular bobble head or not. I don’t even think that there was a halfway good reward for the trouble of finding them all. Kind of like the Korok seeds in the new Twilight Princess games.

Maybe if at the end of the journey I’d been able to sit in a big throne of bobbleheads like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, then I might’ve gotten out my magnifying glass and looked up some guides. That’s all we really want in the end, isn’t it, a throne worthy of our accomplishments.

TETSEMI I WANNA KNOW, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN

Question for the Blizzard Watch Podcast – Diablo IV did a very interesting thing with the most recent expansion, allowing you start at level 1 and just play the expansion to get to end game with current gear, talents, etc. Do you think WoW could copy this path to get new players caught up to ongoing to players and then have incentives (like daily/weeklies) to go explore old content?

There’s nothing saying that they couldn’t do that. We’d have to be prepared to have characters getting a quest with basically every level they turn in. With most new expansions having four leveling zones and one or two endgame areas, you’re looking at about 20 levels per zone. It could be throwing a lot of new things at players quickly to keep them on pace to finish the new story and hit max level at the same time. Not impossible to handle, but it would be a bit daunting.

I do unequivocally like the idea of adding in more dailies/weeklies to send people into the old world to see things they haven’t seen in a while. Maybe a new faction of historians that will reward you with fancy doodads for your house and mounts for your butt.

Nothing wakes you up in the morning quite like a nice doughnut. Even Bacardi can’t resist the allure. He is truly a Canadian cat. Make sure to leave him offerings of doughnuts to get the best loot possible this week. It could be the difference between getting that rare mount or not! You can’t take that chance, can you? You’d be a headstrong fool to go mount hunting without every bit of random luck you can scrape together.
