OTXO and Sol Cesto are this week’s free games from the Epic Games Store

Every week the Epic Games Store gives away a game or two for free. This week, we get two roguelites: a brutal top-down shooter and a weird lil dungeon crawler.

OXTO is either horrifically or tantalizingly violent, depending on your perspective. It uses a pixellated art style, which can sometimes seem much gorier than realism, while also technically showing less. OXTO uses this to its advantage, painting black and white stages red as you murder your way through them. The replay capability is huge, since it is a roguelite, which plays into the narrative. You can’t remember anything but your motivation to find your wife in this weird mansion filled with baddies, but as you shoot your way through again and again, the narrative begins to emerge. It’s a pretty decent little game if you don’t mind the gore.

Sol Cesto is simultaneously familiar and novel. The art style is handdrawn, and the gameplay pulls directly from the very old school dungeon crawlers which may remind 90s kids of the earliest phone games that weren’t Snake. It is a love letter to that era, while also adding its own twist on things. It’s well worth the pickup — and would be, even if it weren’t free this week.
