Dungeons & Dragons World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion will bring Warcraft back to tabletop this November

Yesterday at Gen Con the Dungeons & Dragons team revealed an updated roadmap and several new releases, including the “worst kept secret” that has been bouncing around the internet this week: a crossover with none other than World of Warcraft, with a rule expansion that brings everything you’d need to play a Warcraft campaign into D&D 5.5e. The Dungeons & Dragons World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion is due out this year, and it’s available for pre-order right now.

But before you click buy, here’s what’s in Warcraft’s new D&D crossover.

As illustrated by a 20-sided die rolling across famous locations from Azeroth in the announcement trailer, the expansion seems to be broad in scope: rather than a narrowly focused adventure set in a single chapter of World of Warcraft, players will be able to create their own stories using settings and characters from over two decades of lore, though there’s also an Icecrown Citadel adventure (including maps and tokens) if you just want to jump into classic Azeroth.

The Dungeons & Dragons World of Warcraft gameplay expansion is a 256-page sourcebook sounds a bit like an Azerothian Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide all rolled into one. All thirteen playable WoW classes are included, with several new and updated subclasses added to account for specializations. For example, D&D Clerics stand in for Priests and have Shadow Domain and Discipline Domain subclasses. You’ll find sixteen species to choose from when creating a character — 11 of them completely new to Dungeons & Dragons.

Upwards of 80 monsters and bosses have been promised, and I can’t wait to see how some of the most famous villains in WoW’s history translate to D&D stat blocks. There are over 60 spells, seven detailed dungeons (mostly from Classic), over 20 factions to champion, and dozens of magic items all included in the expansion.

The crossover’s cover features a group of heroes in familiar-looking armor facing off against the Lich King, with Sindragosa menacing in the background. The alternate art cover features a fantastically green imagining of a Murloc invasion. There will also be a Collector’s Edition with a slide-out featuring Horde and Alliance symbols.

You’ll be able to pick up a physical copy of the World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion for $59.99 USD ($39.99 for a digital version), or and a bundle of both physical and digital for $79.99 USD. You can pick up the Icecrown Citadel Adventure Map Pack separately for $29.99 USD (or $19.99 for a digital version). These prices are about average for D&D books, though having two books does make the package deal more expensive.

If you want both books (and more), consider the World of Warcraft Ultimate Bundle which includes digital and physical versions of the gameplay expansion book and the Icecrown Citadel adventure as well as a World of Warcraft-themed DM screen for $124.99 USD. But if you’re thinking about spending on the Ultimate Bundle, for just a bit more you can get the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which is available for a cool $149.99 USD and includes the Dungeons & Dragons World of Warcraft Collector’s Edition with a special sculpted foil cover for the physical book plus a digital version, as well as the the Icecrown Citadel adventure map pack (physical and digital), and the DM screen. The difference between these two editions is the special Collector’s Edition book, which would look very nice on a shelf, but may not be essential to you. Both of these editions have extra perks for pre-ordering, including the Icy Throne Digital Dice Set and Horde & Alliance Character Sheet Backgrounds for D&D Beyond, Murloc Promo Mini (while supplies last), D&D Encounters: Season of Champions mini-adventure, and a code for World of Warcraft in-game items. The description specifically says items, plural, but there’s no word on what these items will be.

the D&D World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion official release date is November 17, but the books are available for pre-order right now — and you can head down to your local bookstore and enjoy early access on November 3.
