The Queue: Pretty Reckless

We went and saw The Pretty Reckless last week, and it was amazing! They put on one heck of a great rock show. Taylor Momsen has an amazing rock and roll voice, and the band backs her up so well. Their new album slotted in beautifully with their older songs like it belonged there all along. I’m glad that we took the extra trip to go see them headlining their own show, rather than the opener for AC/DC a couple of days earlier. If you get the chance to see them on their tour, you should take it. You won’t have a face anymore after it was rocked off, but that’s ok — you’ll have given it up for a good cause.

The rest of the trip was fun, rainy, but fun! We had ice cream in the mountains, soaked in some hot springs, and walked along a beach. The beach also had ice cream, if you can believe it.

While I look into plane tickets to another Pretty Reckless show, it’s time for our daily question and answer column — The Queue!

Q4tQ: what’s an in-game ability that you thought would be useless or otherwise ignored, but turned out to be very helpful when you used it?

When my samurai in FFV got the ability to throw money at enemies, I dismissed it, because I didn’t like the idea of throwing money away. But as it turns out, doing two to four thousand non-elemental damage to every enemy on the screen is incredibly powerful. And in most battles, you get a big chunk of gold back.

I’m going back a little ways here and saying Divine Intervention. What do you mean, it kills me? I’d never use that; that’s silly. Surely it’s better to keep the healer alive and fighting rather than putting an immunity bubble on someone.

Then you actually start raiding and find out that it’s actually really helpful to be able to keep someone alive through a wipe. Someone who could start bringing people back to life and save a bunch of time on the run back. I don’t know if I ever used it to save someone’s life during a pull, but I could see a case to be made for it. Especially if it wiped out a debuff that was going to run roughshod over the rest of the group. It’s one of those things that could’ve been so situationally amazing that it’s a little sad the spell no longer exists.

Bring it back, you cowards!

Q4tQ: Some WoW players are reporting that the game has started playing their character for them when they disconnect during instanced group content. Speculation is that this is an early form of some new system, where the tech used for follower dungeons and raids prevents a disconnect from being dead weight and ruining a boss fight. How would you feel if the game starts playing your character for you?

I do like the idea of my character still contributing if I disconnected; that’s not so bad. It’s weird to think of something else playing my character, which I think is why I initially bristled at the concept. There’s no real reason why having an AI take over and do a basic rotation while you’re gone should be that controversial. Now, obviously, things get complicated with tanking or healing characters, and planning routes in higher dungeons or fighting raid bosses. But even then, I bet that the game could handle it.

What I think would be really neat, though, is having your characters go out and do world quests or gather for you during your off hours. Wouldn’t it be great to log in, and find a bag full of herbs waiting for you? Especially if it helped the world feel more lived-in with characters out in the world.

Or another neat idea would be to run story mode raids and follower dungeons with characters from your account. I’m not saying I want a single player World of Warcraft but it could be done this way for instanced content if you just wanted a quick run with no muss or fuss.

Q4tQ did you ever get so impatient for a game that you played the demo again?

No way, man. If I really like a demo for a game, I couldn’t put myself through the incomplete package again. I want to get into it for real. I’d accept no substitutions, especially if I have progression that won’t carry over from the demo to the actual game.

I used to do that a million years ago with demo discs, though. I was a kid who knew if I would be able to buy the game when it came out! I had to squeeze every bit of play out of those discs and try all sorts of weird things in the demo.

Today, Bacardi is recovering after having his paws cleaned. They were so dirty, and he was so grumpy the whole time. That does mean he doesn’t like me that much right now, but he does have nice and shiny paws to get you your shiny loot. It’s the all-important beginning of a season when that loot is the best so make sure you tip him well for his time.
