Every week the Epic Games Store gives away a game or two for free. This week, we’re celebrating Halloween with a day-glo survival horror game that pays homage to the greats.

If you ever wondered what it looks like when Lisa Frank has a nightmare she’s trapped in Resident Evil, Sorry We’re Closed will answer that question. Retro-inspired survival horror gameplay meets a high-contrast neon color palette, and it’s like it was made for me. While there’s always something to be said about regular ol creeping dread, I have a soft spot for the juxtaposition of hot pink and shooting demons in the face with a gun. Whether or not this is an aesthetic you enjoy personally, you have to admit they truly committed to it in a way you have to give props to.

It is a perfect game to play for Halloween, as it it gleeful in its embrace of the horror genre as well. Despite the neon, you can clearly trace the lineage of the roots of survival horror in its relatively few polygons and the weird (sometimes annoying) fixed camera. It’s an interesting development proposition: do you adopt those iconic conventions everyone hated, or do you reject them but lose that je ne sais quoi? So, expect a good time, but expect a few of those irritations from 2004 to come back full force. Not that we’re familiar with that particular seesaw on this site.
