Breakfast Topic: Holiday traditions

I keep a lot of fairly common traditions this time of year. We use great-grandma’s cookie recipe from Germany (even though nobody really wants to eat them), we open presents with a couple bottles of sparkling wine, and every year on Boxing Day we have a pajama party to play with our new stuff. However, my guild family in World of Warcraft brings a whole new set of traditions to the table.

For years we did a Secret Santa, where we exchanged names and then gifts. The more thoughtful Santas made sure to go to Kharanos for the extra-festive red-ribboned wrapping paper. As more people quit the game and everyone already collected the less expensive pets and mounts, we fell out of practice. We would also stuff the guild bank with Simple Wood as a quirky little holiday tradition. Well, not so much ‘we’ as ‘one guy’ and not really as a ‘holiday tradition’ as much as ‘hey it’s Wednesday!’

This year, I plan on starting a new tradition by playing Sugar Plum Sylvanas in Heroes of the Storm after the kids go to bed on Christmas Eve, before I have to mobilize the other, non-dead elves around the house. I also think it might be fun to throw a party for the NPCs who staff my garrison every year. I’ve got a pony keg and cakes from Dalaran aren’t too expensive. I may even let Lantresor out of the mines for once.

Do you have any in-game traditions during the holiday season?
