The X-Files returns to TV tonight with a 2-night premiere
Yes, there will be aliens and monsters and conspiracies. No, there will not be relationship drama.
The X-Files is back after 14 years. The show that took chances on dark storytelling and bad timeslots (Friday nights anyone?) is back on Fox tonight for a 6 episode run. I honestly don’t know what’s involved in this short season as I willfully stay unspoiled when I know I’m going to watch something, but I do know they are going to mix up their traditional conspiracy stories with their stand alone monster-of-the-week stories.
In my not-so-humble-opinion, the monster-of-the-week stories were some of the best. The conspiracy stories were a lot of chasing mysterious leads that went nowhere. Not that the monster stories always ended cleanly, but at least they had finality to them and some great banter between Mulder and Scully along the way. And they also allowed for some humorous episodes which were also some of the best of the original series run.
One thing showrunner Chris Carter recenlty said is that he will not be addressing Mulder and Scully’s on-again and off-again relationship (or that they have a son, apparently). I imagine that would be hard to do in six episodes along with everything else. But I predict this run will be successful and a longer season will be ordered for next year that will tackle that.
Another piece of good news: the writers are basically ignoring what happened in the confusing movies. So let’s sit back and enjoy tonight and Monday night’s two-night premiere. I’m so ready for blue flashlights, creepy kids, unexplained supernatural phenomena, Mulder deadpans, Scully eyerolls, and all the rest of it again. But with smaller cellphones.
