Breakfast Topic: Ode to a morning routine
Much has happened since the release of Warlords of Draenor back in November 2014. For us, the most notable happening was the launch of Blizzard Watch in February 2015. Since then, I’ve had to shift around aspects of my daily schedule to run this place indie. I lived a nocturnal life for many years with the darkest hours of night being some of my most productive. To run Blizzard Watch properly, though, I had to flip everything around and become a morning person. It was hard … until I found a routine. The Legion pre-patch destroys that routine. I’m afraid.
My routine went like so:
- Wake up at 5 a.m.
- Make a pot of coffee
- Do my garrison errands while slowly caffeinating to wakefulness
- Eat breakfast
- Finally, be awake enough to get to form words
The timing of everything just worked. Daily quests in World of Warcraft reset at 5 a.m. Central. I’d wake up just in time for everything to be fresh. Garrison chores (missions, herbs, the mine) were low impact and low effort — perfect gameplay during my first cup of coffee. No, the garrison wasn’t exciting, but it provided me with a regular, daily activity I could use to formulate a routine. A routine, it turns out, is essential to transforming one’s self from a nocturnal lifestyle to that of a daywalker. Before finding one, I failed over and over at shifting my schedule — but once I integrated those garrison chores into my morning, it stuck.
While technically the garrison will still be there, there’ll be no gain or benefit to continuing to maintain it. My motivation is gone. And now, on the eve of the Legion pre-patch, I wonder what I’ll find to replace it in my routine. That isn’t to say I don’t want the patch; I absolutely do want the patch. Rather, I’m only just now realizing the dull tedium of Warlords of Draenor actually served an important purpose to me, for better or worse.
Are you prepared for the Legion pre-patch? Will you miss the regularity of your garrison or are you glad to see it burn?
