Free Hearthstone packs to celebrate 70 million players

As Hearthstone hits a staggering milestone of 70 million players, they’re celebrating by giving 3 free Journey to Un’goro card packs to everyone who logs into the game between now and the end of May. Their announcement also mentions, with the release of Journey to Un’goro, there were more active same-day players than at any other point in the game’s history. Though the game is over three years old now, it’s still going strong.

To put these numbers in perspective, World of Warcraft was considered a gaming behemoth when it hit its peak of 12 million subscribers back in 2010, though 100 million total accounts had been created as of January 2014. Diablo III is one of the best-selling games of all time with 30 million sales, and Overwatch recently announced 30 million of its own.

Hearthstone and its 70 million aren’t directly comparable to any of those titles due to its free-to-play nature, but the numbers are still worth examining. Those World of Warcraft numbers might be telling: even though WoW had 100 million total accounts, the maximum number of accounts active at any one time was 12 million. 70 million players have downloaded Hearthstone, but we don’t know how many are actually playing. Still, Journey to Un’goro suggests the game hasn’t peaked yet. However many active players they have, it’s more than at any other time in the game’s history.
