What is your Blizzardverse resolution for 2018?
Year after year, we humans do something very odd when it comes time to put up a new calendar for a new year. We set goals for ourselves — “New Year’s resolutions” — in hopes that we’ll be able to change something about ourselves for the better over the next twelve months. I say this is an odd tradition because 1) most people don’t stick to their goals for more than a couple weeks and 2) you don’t actually need a new year to be what spurs you into self-improvement — any day can be the day you make yourself better!
Yet, despite the silliness behind setting New Year’s resolutions, it’s still something I enjoy doing, even if I’m only doing it for tradition’s sake. And when you have a collective video game universe as big as the one Blizzard’s created, it’s not all that uncommon to set goals for your in-game self, either. Several people will make it a goal to complete a certain achievement in World of Warcraft, while others will aim for certain Competitive Mode brackets in Overwatch or Heroes of the Storm.
Last year, I joked about wanting to become the “best Heroes of the Storm player NA,” and while that obviously wasn’t a serious goal, the sentiment of wanting to get better at HotS and understand the meta was still there. And I like to think I’ve achieved that over 2017, even if I maybe didn’t make it as far as I could have. So in 2018, I’ll be continuing to work on improving my Heroes of the Storm skills — but that’s not my main resolution.
No, my main one for the Blizzardverse is much simpler: I want to remember to always play what will be the most fun and what will make me the most happy. Too often have I found myself playing one game over another because “I need to finish X” or “I don’t want to miss out on a daily” or some other reason not driven by pure enjoyment*. Taking a step back this year — from hardcore raiding, from achievement hunting, and more — has allowed me to see the bigger picture and enjoy these games more than ever.
So that’s my goal — play what’s going to make me most happy. How about you? Do you have any in-game resolutions? Advice for anyone looking to complete something specific? Sound off below… and happy 2018!
