Classes that could be added in Diablo 4 expansions
Diablo 4‘s popularity as well as its open-ended story means that an expansion (or three) is a matter of when, not if. Regardless of where our hero may go in Sanctuary it is extremely likely that there will be at least one more class added to the game each expansion, and possibly even added as a DLC like Diablo 3‘s Necromancer. Which class could be added next is a tough question to answer, but there are various hints in D4 as well as in the Book of Lorath and Diablo Immortal. While it’s arguable the development team could add any class they feel like adding, the amount of depth in the narrative suggests that the groundwork for future classes may already have been laid down.
This post contains spoilers for Diablo 4 both the main campaign and side quests. Tread carefully, adventurer!
Rogue Lite: Scoundrel and Demon Hunter
Before we cover the classes that could be added next, let’s dispense with two possible ones that most definitely should not be returning: the Demon Hunter and the Scoundrel. In both cases the reasoning is simple, as the Rogue already covers the vast range of their class skills and techniques. Lyndon’s return in D4 after his role as follower in Diablo 3 was a welcome one, but the idea that his existence as an NPC questgiver heralds the addition of a playable Scoundrel feels farfetched.
Martial Warriors: Blood Knight, Crusader, and Amazon
The Blood Knight is the most recent class added to the Diablo franchise; it made its debut in Diablo Immortal earlier this month. While there isn’t much direct evidence that a Blood Knight will be the next class added to D4 it’s hard to escape how important blood and blood magic are to the plot of the game. In addition there is a reference to Fernam and the Blood Knights in the Book of Lorath, thus canonizing their existence in the main story. If the managers of the franchise decide to go for synergy between the two games, it could make sense to add the Blood Knight — and with Gea Kul already present in game it may simply be a matter of adding a small story quest to introduce them.
The next youngest class added to Diablo is the Crusader — although it’s arguable it’s a spiritual cousin to the Diablo 2 Paladin and D3 Templar — and there’s a solid case for it making a return. Besides the fact that it’s also playable in DI, there’s a side quest chain in D4 where you help a Crusader recover the armor and take up the name of the previous Johanna. There’s also been speculation of an “angelic sixth class” in the community, which could indicate the Crusader or one of its similar forebears; with both divine and heavy armor classes completely absent so far, adding the Crusader would help fill an empty role in Sanctuary.
One last possibility in this category is the Amazon last seen in D2 and Heroes of the Storm. There’s little evidence in-game of the Amazon’s return, and while Lorath does attempt to visit Skovos in the Book of Lorath, he is turned away by a ship of Askari (the Amazons’ name for themselves). There is also the unknown fate of Horadrim sent to Skovos; all these facts together suggest the Askari have adopted a firm isolationist bent. This could indicate one of two things: Skovos and the Amazon are unlikely to be seen over the course of D4, or something bad is happening and we’ll be heading there in the future at which point the Amazon could be added. For now though they appear to be sitting D4 out.
The other remaining classes from Diablo 3: Monk and Witch Doctor
As already noted there is no “Divine” class in D4, likely because Inarius and the Cathedral of Light functions more like an antagonist than an ally in the campaign. While the relationship between the Horadrim and the Cathedral are currently strained, this does not prevent the next class from being a Holy one. The Monk is already present in the game among the NPCs, with Iosef — in case you’ve forgotten, he’s the one who rescues you in Nevesk — being the most prominent example. While the events of the game prevent him from further assisting the development of other Monks, that doesn’t preclude them as a possibility. Another similar possibility would be a Cleric (which was originally supposed to be in a D2 expansion), being more of a caster than a combat class, or perhaps hybridized. One intriguing idea would be for the Cleric to have access to either Holy or Demonic powers based on their talent choices, modeling themselves on Prava or Elias.
The final possibility is the Witch Doctor or Witch. There’s a lot of reasons to think this class will be added at some point, with the main one being the prominent role of the witch Taissa in the game. In addition the entire zone of Hawezar feels dedicated to the Witch Doctor like Scosglen was to the Druid. If added I suspect it’ll play differently from D3‘s Witch Doctor, and may be renamed to Witch or a new name to reflect that fact. Regardless it’d be surprising if we never got a chance to emulate Taissa’s powers as a Witch.
As already stated there’s nothing preventing the Diablo caretakers from adding or modifying classes however they wish to. Given the possibilities, though, the Crusader (or namesake) feels like it’ll be the next one added simply to fill that class fantasy, with a Witch Doctor the second strongest possibility to be added when the first expansion or DLC adds a new class to Diablo 4.
