What to do with your Shadowflame Crests in patch 10.2

It’s natural to wonder what’s happening to Shadowflame Crests as patch 10.2 is released, since such a large portion of WoW’s patch 10.1 gameplay has been gathering that currency for gear upgrades. It seemed like activities of all kinds rewarded bits of Crest that we could turn into full-fledged Shadowflame Crests, and the gear upgrade system was evidently a big success in Blizzard’s opinion too since the gear upgrade system is returning with the new Dreaming Crests. However, if you’ve already got a whole bag full of Shadowflame Crests, you’re probably wondering what you can do with them once patch 10.2 drops and Dreaming Crests become the new hotness.

Unfortunately, the answer is “not much” going forward. On the PTR, both Crest Fragments and Shadowflame Crests of all levels have become grey-quality vendor items, and Dragonflight Season 2 gear now sports a tag noting that it’s from Season 2, as well as its old upgrade level, both in that same shade of vendor-trash grey. You can still use Season 2 crests (along with Flightstones, which are remaining exactly the same going into patch 10.2) to upgrade your Season 2 items — perfect if you have any lingering upgrades you’ve forgotten to do before the patch — but you won’t be able to use Shadowflame Crests to upgrade shiny, new 10.2 Season 3 gear. For that, you’ll need to acquire the new Dreaming Crests.

However, if you don’t have any upgrades left to do and you’re wondering what to do with these Shadowflame Fragments and Shadowflame Crests currently hanging out in your bag, hang onto both your Crests and your Fragments until after the patch. Shadowflame Crests can already be sold to a vendor for gold, but in 10.2 you will also be able to sell any leftover Crest Fragments for gold — presently, in 10.1, you can’t sell off these partial Crests on their own. Hanging onto them until after the patch drops will allow you to squeeze the most gold out of your once-important Shadowflame Crests, and no doubt clear up bag slots for all that new gear you’ll be hoarding and upgrading soon enough.
