Do you watch The Game Awards for the awards, for the announcements or both?
Tomorrow night is the 2023 edition of The Game Awards and there’s quite the battle shaping up for Game of the Year between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. We’ll talk about the nominees tomorrow, but today I’m wondering about another facet to the show tomorrow: do you tune into The Game Awards for the awards themselves or are you more interested in new game announcements and trailers?
There’s a lot of reasons to enjoy awards shows: cheering when games you enjoyed get rewarded (or booing when they lose to a game you don’t think they should have lost to), having a chance to check out games you may otherwise have missed, and of course the opportunity to see noted Hollywood actors having fun or wondering what the heck they’re doing there. In between celebration of the past however has been a growing focus on the future with many development studios saving their announcements for The Game Awards.
This week started off with a twist when the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer was leaked and then subsequently released ahead of schedule. Oddly enough, though, it wasn’t going to premiere on Thursday but yesterday. Did Rockstar Games simply want attention before The Game Awards, or are we getting a longer follow up trailer tomorrow night? EA may also have been the victim of a leak ahead of tomorrow night, although it hasn’t been confirmed.
Some announcements are already known, even if not all the details are yet revealed. Baldur’s Gate 3 will finally be getting an XBox release date this month. Sega has been teasing “New Era, New Energy” for their upcoming announcement, which many believe means the return of a dormant title (Virtua Fighter is a popular prediction) or a new Genesis mini console. And while Fortnite Rocket Racing has already been announced there is expected to be a lot of information revealed ahead of its debut on Friday.
So yeah, you could say I’m excited about The Game Awards tomorrow. While I will be curious to see who wins, I have to admit I’m more pumped to see the announcements. What about you? Do you watch The Game Awards? Do you care about the awards, or are you looking forward to new reveals? And do you have any wild predictions for the event? Let us know in the comments!
