Bright colors? In MY Diablo 4? Or: where did all of these iridescent feathers come from?
Diablo 4’s cosmetic’s shop has had a constant parade of new sets since launch, most sets have been based on metal, broken relics, skins, bones, or scales of creatures with have seen around Sanctuary. They have frequently been grim, with the only highlights coming from gems, elemental sparks or eldritch glows. Recently however the gamefeatured a number of sets with a profusions of long, deeply colored feathers. Which got me to thinking, where did all the feathers come from?
Brightly colored feathers fascinate me. Iridescent feathers, much like scales on butterfly wings, are not brightly colored due to pigments, but because of how the shapes of the feather filaments reflect light. We are only just bringing to understand how crazy amazing these things are.
When I look at the images from the store, most of the feathers seem to be primary flight feathers. The typical bird wing has between 8 to 11 primary flight feathers — these are long, stiff, straight feathers used to steer and have the profile of the typical feather you see in artwork. This means each bird has between 16 and 22 feathers of this type. The longest primary flight feathers come from cranes or pheasants, not birds we have seen in Sanctuary yet. The feathers in these sets have deep, rich colors suggesting either they have been dyed, or there are flocks of jewel colored birds out there somewhere. There is also a horse armor that is adorned with peacock tail feathers, a bird we have also not seen in the world thus far.
Does this hint at multiple environments on Sanctuary that are largely untouched by the corruption of the war between heaven and hell?
What are your theories on where the feathers all came from? Did the designers not think about the source and I’m over thinking it? Or are these hints about what we will see in the next expansion, or the one after that? If so, I wonder what else is out there to find?
