Every gem and new ability in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria

WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria uses a different gearing model than traditional World of Warcraft. Most gear will have very few attributes, but you will be able to customize your gear by adding gems, which add unique, powerful new abilities to your character. But you’ll have to take the time to track those gems down yourself — as well as the gear to put them in.

Unlike retail or WoW Classic, WoW Remix doesn’t allow you to access the Auction House or professions, and cannot send gear, consumables, or money to yourself from a retail character. Your WoW Remix character will have to succeed as a self-sufficient entity — and that means powering up with plenty of gems. Most gear you come across will have specific gem sockets, and higher level gear has more sockets, and you must match the correct type of gem to the correct socket.

Gear comes from the usual sources, but you’ll primarily find gems in Caches of Infinite Treasure, which are a common reward quests. Though gems can be drops as well, you’re likely to get most of them from these caches.

But just what do these gems do? Here’s every of gem you can get in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria:

Meta gems (unique)

For: Helm

There are 12 different meta gems, all of which teach you a new ability:

Cogwheel gems (unique)

For: Boots

Based on iconic class or covenant movement abilities, each cogwheel gem provides a new active ability, letting you play a Mage with Vanish or a Rogue with Blink — that is to say the skills granted by cogwheel gems can be used by anyone with the gem equipped,

There are 17 different cogwheel gems:

Tinker gems (unique)

For: Shoulder, hands, waist

Tinker gems provide new passive abilities, some of which are based on existing class abilities. Some of these abilities are better suited to group play, while others boost your performance only.

There are 36 tinker gems:

Prismatic gems

For: Chest, legs, neck, rings, trinkets

Prismatic gems give you simple stat boosts, and unlike the other gems on this list they aren’t unique, so you can equip as many of them as you’d like. Each prismatic gem has four quality levels, and you can upgrade gems by combining  that can be three of the previous quality gem.

  • Uncommon prismatic gems give +1 bonus
  • Rare prismatic gems give +2 bonus
  • Epic prismatic gems give +3 bonus
  • Legendary prismatic gems give +4 bonus

There are seven types of prismatic gem, each providing different stat buffs:

  • Deadly Sapphire — Critical Strike
  • Masterful Amethyst — Mastery
  • Quick Topaz — Haste
  • Versatile Diamond — Versatility
  • Hungering Ruby — Leech
  • Stalwart Pearl — Armor
  • Sustaining Emerald — Health Regeneration
  • Swift Opal — Speed

Note that the only way to currently obtain neck, rings, and trinkets is by completing specific achievements, so these slots will otherwise remain empty until you’ve made some progress in the game. As these rewards are epic quality items at a high item level, they automatically come with three prismatic gem slots each, representing an additional 15 gem slots, which will give your WoW Remix characters a substantial amount of power once unlocked.
