How to complete the Hallowfall Fishing Derby in The War Within

The Hallowfall Fishing Derby is a special weekly quest that opens up after completing the World of Warcraft: The War Within campaign. Having a fishing derby in an expansion is nothing new — many long-time players tackled the Kalu’ak’s during Wrath of the Lich King. Fishing events are some of the less serious quests available for regular completion, but don’t be fooled — they require focused effort!

How to complete the Hallowfall Fishing Derby

Everyone needs a casual day of fishing, and Captain Oathmyt of the Hallowfall Arathi agrees. Seek them out south of Mereldar (located on the edge of the water in Dayspring Fields) every Saturday to join this unique weekly event through their quest — The Hallowfall Fishing Derby. You need to catch three specific fish to complete it but under some very particular guidelines:

  • Your catches must be Trophy fish — variations on the 20 fish available within the Expansion zones. Only the fish listed in your quest can be caught as Trophy fish.
  • The fish must be caught within one hour of taking the quest while you have the Derby Dasher buff, which allows you to catch Trophy fish.
  • The fish in this week’s quest will vary — five quest possibilities are documented so far.
  • Different fish are available from different pool types, and some fish have a significantly better chance of being caught with buffs from tossing other fish back into the pool.
  • The quest giver, Captain Oathmyt, will despawn around midnight server time, preventing you from turning in the completed quest that day!

Complete the quest by flying to specific pools in the Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and Azj-Kahet to fish up your quarry. The combinations of fish, zones, and pool types are available in the Wowhead Derby quest list if you prefer an easier reference than your fishing journal. Certain rare fish are easier to fish up from their preferred pool/location if you toss back their more commonly caught pool buddies to earn a buff:

You gain nothing from fishing in open water for the quest — focus on the specific pools for your fish. It also helps to have “throw-back” fish in your bags already — ones that grant Perception, skill, or improve the chance to catch other fish — or in your Warbank to grab rapidly. Additionally, use whatever rapid transportation options are available, such as the rapid flight path for Skyriding between zones, the portal between the Weaver’s Lair in Azj-Kahet and Dornegal in the Isle of Dorn, your hearthstone. That hour-long buff passes quickly.

Rewards you can earn from the Hallowfall Fishing Derby weekly quest

So why put yourself through this? The quest and the buff give Mereldar Derby Marks, a unique currency (trackable in your currency tab) for the event. Spend these marks with Captain Oathmyt for various goodies: unique transmogs, two Algari Weaverline enchantments, profession recipes, and a re-purchaseable item, the Soaked Journal Entry, that permanently increases your Khaz Algar fishing skill by 10 points, up to the cap of 300.

Additionally, completing the Derby quest is one of the requirements for The Derby Dash achievement (along with catching all fish throughout Khaz Algar), which also rewards Kah, Legend of the Deep. Kah is a red color variation on the nightmare fuel July Trading Post mount, the Underlight Corrupted Behemoth. So grab your fishing rod and get out there — goodies await!
