Waiting on LFR queues? Here are our picks for a few games to play this weekend
Happy Friday, Watchers, and welcome to the official start of Season 1 in The War Within! There’s a lot of sales and releases this week, so I’m going to tap just a few of those things for you to keep busy if you need something to do while waiting on those LFR queues.
Release of the Week: Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
If you’re a fan of Pokemon but really want that Akira Toriyama art style, then I have a treat for you. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince arrives on PC this week, after spending the last year as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Head out into the world and battle, bait and barter to get new monsters in your party. What makes this different compared to Pokemon or even Monster Hunter Stories is that Monsters has a fairly robust weather system and a seasonal system, which influences the world around you and what you can find.
Get Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince for $40 on PC at Steam, or for full price ($60) on Nintendo Switch.
Release of the week 2: Dice Player One
Perhaps best described as “Balatro meets Yahtzee with The World Ends With You aesthetics,” this release by Chinese developers KDream has you rolling dice to get poker hands (Three of a Kind, Full House, etc.) with skill dice that change the effects of the board. These skill dice can do things like add an Angel to the board when they are thrown (giving +50 to your score) or multiplying all dice on the board when certain numbers are thrown. Note that the translation is a little rough, as the developers at KDream have admitted they don’t speak English so it’s a mix of community help and machine translation.
So head out and roll some dice to win some battles.
Get Dice Player One for $13.50 on PC at Steam.
Steal of a deal: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Released just after Marvel’s The Avengers was met with poor reviews, Guardians of the Galaxy may be my second favorite super hero game I’ve played. With an amazing story and characters that feel pulled directly from the comics, I had a blast with this short adventure title. This is not a game to play on anything higher than easy — the combat in this game is nothing to write home about, and you’re really playing it for the plot. Settle in, turn on Awesome Mix Vol. 1, and enjoy.
Get Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for $12 on PC at Humble Bundle (for Steam).
Bonus round: No Man’s Sky
Has there been a bigger face turn in gaming than No Man’s Sky? Released without showing any of the promised features, Hello Games has taken the community feedback to heart and given five major content updates, and something like 30 minor content updates since launch — and all for free. This newest content updates adds in fishing, fish farming, and undersea exploration. Grab your ship and explore your own quarter of the universe with No Man’s Sky.
Grab No Man’s Sky for $24 on Steam.
