How to activate the Trials of the Dragonflights, Blackwing Lair’s difficulty modifiers in Season of Discovery Phase 5

The iconic Blackwing Lair raid returns to WoW Classic on September 26 at 1pm pacific time when Season of Discovery Phase 5 goes live. The raid will be immediately available to all players and has been tuned as a 20 player experience, though the maximum raid size is capped at 40 players, and it will be on a 7-day reset time. Blackwing Lair can be completed in its original form but the WoW Classic team has added a new difficulty modifier called Trial of the Dragonflights that players can choose to challenge themselves with for more rewards.

If your group is up for the challenge, here’s what you can expect from these new modifiers and how to activate them in Blackwing Lair!

Trials of the Dragonflights

There are 5 different modifiers you can choose from but we only have details on 4 of them right now. Players can enable each modifier by talking to Victor Nefriendius, a new NPC located inside Blackwing Lair right at the entrance. Each modifier enables a random mechanic related to the dragonflight it’s named after for players to overcome throughout the raid:

  • Blue Trial — Randomly afflicted with an Arcane Bomb, which will deal heavy damage split among all those affected.
  • Bronze Trial — Time will randomly slow down and speed up.
  • Green Trial — Randomly afflicted by powerful nature magic, dealing damage to nearby players and leaving a pool of poison.
  • Red Trial — When injured, burn for 400 fire damage every 3 seconds until healed above 90% of your maximum health. Direct heals remove 1 stack.
  • Black Trial — Unknown mechanic.

Players will earn more rewards from defeating Nefarian for each additional trial that’s active and become capped at 3 different active trials. Meaning that nothing is stopping players from completing the raid with all 5 trials active but it will earn you the same amount of extra rewards as if you had 3 trials active. On top of that, the active trials will need to be completed by everyone in the raid in order for the extra rewards to drop. Keep in mind that if your group decides to disable one of the trials, it can’t be enabled again, probably until the raid is completed.

Each week, there is a specific trial that will yield an additional bonus reward for completing. There will be a hint as to which trial this is around Victor Nefriendius, and it sounds like the bonus trial will rotate each week.

Blackwing Lair rewards

The Classic Tier 2 set armor is available in Phase 5 in two different version — Core Forged and Draconic. The Draconic version gives players all new set bonuses and can be purchased from Victor Nefriendius for the corresponding tier 2 token. The Core Forged version has the base stats, level, and appearance of the Draconic set but the set bonuses are similar to the Tier 1 set from Molten Core. In order to get Core Forged pieces, you need to turn in a corresponding Draconic piece to the Hydraxian vendor inside Molten Core at the entrance.
