Turmoil is this week’s Epic Games Store free game
Turmoil is finally on the Epic Game Store, and to celebrate they’re giving it away for free this week. It released in 2016 on Steam and other platforms, but apparently hasn’t been on Epic at all yet. Both Turmoil and its DLC are available on Epic for the first time as it becomes the free game of the week on January 9, 2025, presumably being for sale on the storefront normally after that.
- Release Date: June 2, 2016
- DLC: The Heat is On and Deeper Underground
- Game type: Simulation
Turmoil has several different modes, all of which involve drilling for as much oil (and later, other materials) as you possibly can, while also churning as large a profit as possible. If you want to jump right in with everything unlocked, you can go ahead and play Single Player, which gives you a single round to play around. This is a great, no-consequences way to get your feet wet if this is your first time with the game. The Campaign starts off with far fewer (and less effective) tools which you have an opportunity to upgrade, and you go head-to-head with three other prospectors as a little frontier town grows around you — assuming you don’t go bust. There’s also a multiplayer mode, and you can compete against your fellow players in a weekly leaderboard to see if you can get the best score for a particular map.
I’ve had it for the Steam store for a while, and it’s a fun little game. The gameplay loop can get a little repetitive, and in the Campaign it’s very hard to recover if you find yourself behind. The weekly challenges are a fun way to continue to play after some of the shine wears off. I’m currently 324 on the leaderboard with a score of $-8, so best of luck beating me when you pick it up.
