Repentance is the second update for Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds — now live!

Janthir Wilds is the second expansion for Guild Wars 2 since they moved to an annual release cadence for new content. Each expansion will have three free quarterly updates, and the second update for Janthir Wilds will arrive on March 11, three months after Godspawn gave us the first raid in five years. Titled Repentance this update will see us exploring the outskirts of the ruined mursaat city of Bava Nisos in a new map with brand new challenges and events as players seek to stop the Titans from once more returning to Tyria.

The map is called the Mistburned Barrens and is home to the horrors unleashed by mursaat experimentation in the era before the city’s destruction several centuries ago. The mursaat and their White Mantle allies were no stranger to sacrifice, exploitation of bloodstone magic and tampering with the Mists (hence the “Mistburn” from which the Barrens get their name). Ghosts of both the mursaat and their victims remain haunting these lands even now and will be a challenge for the players as they work through three meta-style events that will be running continuously in the zone. The goal: close the door in Bava Nisos to end the Titan threat for good — but they’ll need to get there first.

Besides the three meta events, there will be defensive activities at the Alliance Staging Ground. There is one heart on the new map at the staging ground with an associated vendor. Most items will only require you to complete the heart once to be unlocked, but the restricted daily currency trade-ins will require recompletion.

Raid Challenge and Legendary Modes, World vs World updates, and a new Mastery track also await in Repentance

The unfolding story is not the only new content arriving with this update. The Mount Balrior raid will receive new modes with a challenge mode being added upon release and a legendary mode for the final boss following two weeks later. For those running the Convergence encounter in the zone a new Titan boss Greer has been added creating new challenges for players who may feel the current Decima encounter has grown stale. The two bosses will alternate weekly.

World vs World mode is receiving some long-needed updates in this release, with most of the changes occurring on March 25. These changes include consolidating the many reward tracks to make it easier for players to determine what rewards to aim for, improved map-currency acquisition on said reward tracks, and a brand new WvW weapon set. Balance changes — including those for victory and skirmish conditions — will be happening as well.

The new Mastery track unlocked in Mistburned Barrens is called Mursaat Shadowcraft and has three ranks:

  • Rank one, which requires two mastery points to unlock, makes available mursaat mirrors to travel around the zone. The destination is shielded so you will not be able to get there via any other means. Each area will have a special chest or encounter so players will want to visit all of them.
  • Rank two needs an additional three mastery points and provides an increased drop rate to the new map currency Curious Mursaat Ruin Shard. As with prior map currencies these can be used to purchase new items as well as trade in for other currencies.
  • Rank three requires four mastery points and completion will upgrade the rewards from the meta event chests.

Rangers will happy to hear they have a new pet option — the Janthiri Bee! Now when told to buzz off, Rangers will be able to do so literally!

New release means new items in the Wizard’s Vault as well as new items exclusive to the Mistburn Barrens map and more Homestead decorations

As with the previous updates since the implementation of the annual expansion model there will be a seasonal refresh of the Wizard’s Vault. These are:

  • Three pieces (gloves, shoulder, and boots) for the new Ward Knight Armor.
  • A new weapon set titled Old Growth; these weapons are very druidic in nature.
  • A new Forest Wisp accessory and infusion.
  • A new floating mystical chair called the Skysage Throne.
  • Legendary Weapon Starter Kits will be available for the harpoon gun Frenzy, the longbow Kudzu, the warhorn The Howler and the focus The Minstrel.

New items will be available from the events and vendor on the map itself. The new weapons are the Scavenged Obsidian set (pictured above), the new armor — for which recipes will be available to purchase in order to craft — is the Truesight Armor set. There will be a new precursor Salmon of Knowledge for the Legendary backpiece coming with the next release. Finally there will be a new Bloodstone Infusion available as a raid reward.

Those who love their Homestead will have new decorations to obtain. In addition to those unlocked in the Mistburned Barrens, there will be new Home Sweet Homestead achievements throughout Tyria that upon completion will reward you with recipes for items reminiscent of the region they are earned in. These achievements will require you to complete 100 events in the specified regions so those who want build all the Joko statues available — praise Joko! — will be spending a lot of time in the Crystal Desert and Vabbi. There will also be a new Armor Case decoration to craft, letting you display your favorite armor sets and outfits.

While the Titan threat has diminished with their defeat at the end of Godspawn it has not ended. In order to do so players will need to contend with the specters of a violent and bloody past. Until then the titanic threat to the Janthir Wilds and all of Tyria will remain.
