Check please! What makes you decide to bail on a class or spec?

With thirteen different World of Warcraft classes, three or four specializations for each one, and the implementation of Warbands, chances are that you’ve tried out many different characters and modes of playing the game. Sometimes you find a spec that fits you like a glove, sometimes it takes some getting used to, and other times you need to give up on a spec entirely.

One of the things I wanted to accomplish in The War Within was to spend a bit more time tanking and healing. I tend to gravitate towards the DPS specs for each class, since that fits a bit better with my casual playstyle. Plus, being a gamer dad means that I could get called away from my keyboard at any time due to a spilled drink or bad dream — much less of a problem for my Warlock than the Disc Priest I’m leveling. Carving out some time to step out of my comfort zone seemed like a good way to round out my Warband.

I switched my Warrior from Fury to Protection, and I am shocked by how much I am enjoying it. The pressure of leading the group and managing aggro was never something that I envied, but I find myself finishing dungeons and re-queuing instead of escaping to one of my DPS characters. Playing solo and running Delves has also been a lot more fun that I anticipated, and for the first time ever my Mage main doesn’t have the highest gear score on my character sheet.

On the other hand, I decided to call it quits on my Restoration Druid. I tried getting familiar with all of the spells, I made a good effort towards a healer-friendly UI, and I made sure that I played the character fairly often so I wouldn’t lose my rhythm. None of that resulted in me enjoying the spec enough to actually want to play it. The decision to stop was both gradual and sudden. I had been contemplating a switch to Balance for a few weeks, but with Tuesday’s reset I found myself avoiding my Druid to the point of not even wanting to log on to open the Great Vault.

So what makes you decide that a spec, or even an entire class, isn’t a great fit for you? Will you stick it out for a whole expansion, or can you tell by the time you hit level 30?
