Tin Foil Roof, Rusted: Speculation on how Blizzard might incorporate professions into player housing

As more and more news comes out about player housing arriving with Midnight, we still don’t have a lot of information on all the ways we will be able to obtain items (though the suggestion is everything). Blizzard has said that dyes will be available from alchemy or inscription, but what about other professions? What can the everyday engineer provide? What enchantment could make a home spellbinding?

Most importantly, what can I make to sell on the auction house or crafting orders for gold to buy my own decorations? Here is some speculation on how to incorporate preexisting professions that Blizzard can use for player housing.

Alchemy and Inscription

Dyes will be big in personalizing your home and furniture and these two (along with herbalism) are the prime candidates for your dye needs. But why stop there? Inscriptionists have the ability to craft Steamy Romance novels, so why not have a few non magic books to have laying around your library or bed stand.  Alchemists could make vials and bottles of assorted liquids and maybe even liquors. And with their mutual gathering profession of herbalism, topiaries and flower arrangements have the ability to open up for interior and possibly exterior design.

Tailoring and Leatherworking

Tailoring already has such items as magic flying carpets that it would be easy to just have a non-flying magic carpet, maybe with an interaction similar to a mountspecial command to allow it to fly up and rest back down. Tailoring is also the best bet for curtains and some furniture, with leatherworking offering more rustic alternatives for couches, rugs and wall hangings. Leatherworking drums would also be nice for random instruments found in the home, for your moody teenager or musically inclined characters.

Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing

Jewelcrafting used to offer more than just jewelry, there were also statues you could place down for buffs. In a home or garden setting, why not carve up more permanent statues.  As for Blacksmiths, weapon and armor racks seem like a great choice, but also cosmetic cookware in copper or thorium… just don’t use dark iron for pots and pans: it will never heat up!

Enchanting and Engineering

Enchanting and engineering have the ability to offer the same thing in different themes: light fixtures. Enchanting could open the door to floating candles and orbs while Engineering could offer string lights similar to the ones we’re now seeing throughout Undermine. Enchanters could also have their unique items such as floating books and brooms that sweep by themselves. For Engineers, possibly they could make the stove pet Pierre’s larger brother, offering a stove and other appliances around the home.

Archeology

The forgotten profession. There’s an opportunity to bring back a profession that’s entire premise was finding and restoring artifacts and in some expansions (such as in a maxed out garrison in  Warlords of Draenor) could be put on display in the right situation. The thrill of traveling the world to find objects and displaying them proudly in your home. Many items that were just to be sold to vendors could have a treasured spot in your library and bring back a part of gameplay that has been missing for too many expansions now.

Everything listed here is just speculation of course and as we approach Midnight and more details are released we will see how much involvement professions will have in interior decorating. Hopefully there are more ways than just dyes for chairs.
