Fat Bear Week and the Steam Autumn Sale has us playing Bear and Breakfast
We’ve been all in on Fat Bear Week for the past few weeks, while also been looking through our Steam wishlists for indie gems to buy on the cheap during the Steam Autumn Sale which just kicked off, and one game we love that fits neatly into the center portion of that venn diagram is Bear and Breakfast. You play as Hank, a bear who loves to eat, but who also knows that, because we live in a capitalist society, to eat as much as he wants to he has to make money. And what better way to make money than renovating old abandoned properties in the woods to rent to humans? I mean, if you’re a bear, of course.
Hank does forage for a lot of ingredients to make the “breakfast” part of the title more appealing, and there are a ton of small minigame and other exploration mechanics across several different biomes, some of which have that Metroidvania, “oops, gotta get the item first” vibe. The gameplay loop is relatively simple, but gets more complex as you unlock more properties and have to manage and refurbish them all at once. Over time you meet even more forest friends who are more than willing to help you out with your hotel venture — you’re paying, right? Crocodiles gotta eat, too, man, and you’re just one fat bear. You can’t be everywhere at once!
Even better, Bear and Breakfast is 55% off during the Steam Autumn Sale. As always there are a ton of favorites you can snap up on the cheap, but $9 for Bear and Breakfast is definitely money well spent. It’s also currently discounted on Switch and PlayStation, and offered on GOG (which allows you to buy a Steam license, so still discounted) and the Epic Games Store.
If you have Discord Nitro, my favorite part of the game is secretly their emoji, which are available on both Steam and the Bear and Breakfast Discord. I use :aaaa:, the jittery screaming face of Gus the opossum, at least a dozen times a day for every possible strong emotion.
