Epic Games Store is giving away Amnesia: The Bunker, the most recent game in the iconic horror series by Frictional Games, for free.

I always find it so odd when creators take a scenario which is already objectively horrifying and then decide to turn it up to 11 by adding an invented supernatural beast as the core of that horror. In Amnesia: The Bunker, you play Henri Clement, a French soldier in World War I. Fighting in that war, on the Western Front in particular, was characterized by the newly invented trench warfare. In The Bunker, you start off in that trench, but it isn’t characterized by the gore of the fallen bodies of your friends, so thick that eventually the bottoms of the trenches were often characterized as “springy,” and then, as you gained ground and advanced, you’d have to dig a new trench, making room between the bodies — or through them.

No, in The Bunker you’re trapped in a locked bunker with some eldritch fiend trying to hunt you. Also scary — there’s very little light, and the light you do have is quite limited, and can attract the monster. The tension is very compelling, and there’s a good amount of gore as you find the previous victims of The Beast. But that fear is in a way that’s removed from reality and therefore somewhat safer than the real horrors we as humans enacted on each other as historical fact.
