35 old-school weapon transmogs that will let you wield the Light headed into Midnight

We’ve known for a long time that Midnight is going to involve fighting back the tide of darkness falling across Azeroth, so when our characters answer the call and step out of the Sunwell we want to be dressed head-to-toe in the finest Light-based transmog — and that includes weapon slots.

I was honestly a bit surprised at the limited selection of glowing yellow crystals, golden orbs, and miscellaneous radiance across all of the weapon transmog menus. I assumed I would have to narrow down each slot from a field of dozens of candidates, but I ended up finding just a handful of Velen-approved appearances per weapon.

Scattered throughout Azeroth are some true hot spots for weapons that would look right at home in the Armory of the Light. The Emerald Dream campaign awards a full set of Spirited Stag transmogs that mix a natural leafy appearance with globs of light. Vault of the Incarnates (Normal), Sanctum of Domination (Heroic), and Uldir (Normal) are raids with across-the-board glowing yellow loot, and you’ll find amazing-looking weapon transmogs from a number of bosses therein.

Read on for our totally unbiased and not-at-all comprehensive list of weapon appearances that will strike fear into the Dark Hearts of any void-based evildoers who dare to descend upon our homeworld. Be sure to leave your own choices for transmogs of the Light in the comments.

An on-theme stave can pull together a whole outfit, so I’m going with a Spire of Coagulated Globules. Sure, Mages aren’t able to wield the Light, but with this staff they can blend in with the Priests and their flashy healing spells. You can earn one in Dragon Soul on Normal Difficulty from Yor’sahj the Unsleeping.

A sleeper candidate is the Blood Boil Lancet, a spiky stave that drops from the Devourer of Souls in the Forge of Souls dungeon. Its yellow swirly adornment almost gives it the appearance of a mini-Light-supernova.

Rogues might be the last class you’d expect to emerge out of the Sunwell in a blaze of golden light, but then again, they are masters of disguise and would certainly want to dress the part from head to toe. I really like the Searing Sunblade’s organic silhouette and rotating pommel adornment. You can buy one from G’eras in Shattrath City for a handful of gold.

You could also go with a nice Entrail Disgorger from the Firelands if your vibe is more sinister and spiky, or a throwback Messenger of Fate from the Black Temple if your vibe is triangles.

My Hunter will be answering the call to defend Quel’thalas wielding Arathar, the Eye of Flame. This bow features a large, round, glowing handguard that may originally have been meant to evoke a burning flame, as it drops from Ragnaros on Normal difficulty in the Firelands. However, I am choosing to squint and interpret it as a shining beacon of Light.

Honorable mention to Sunfury Bow of the Phoenix, a blazing orange and yellow winged number that you can acquire from Prince Malchezaar in the original Karazhan.

I like a simpler, cleaner look for many of my two-handed mace ensembles, so a Ceremonious Smasher works best with my Death Knight’s attempt to blend in with his living colleagues and their glowing outfits. I just kept coming back to the overabundance of spikes and the reflective-but-not-radiant-shine. It’s a Shadowlands Blacksmithing recipe and should be easy enough to find on the Auction House.

Of course, if you’re the class clown of your raid group you can always go with an Archivist’s Improvised Cudgel and show up to Quel’thalas wielding a seven-foot candelabra. Players who take transmog seriously (but not the proper defense of our world) can purchase one at the headquarters of the Azerothian Archives for 10,000 Mysterious Fragments.

The Sophisticated Bonecracker might sound like a drop from the Plaguefall dungeon that is dripping with ooze and riddled with femurs, but it’s actually a clean golden one-handed mace that looks very sharp when dual-wielded. Something about the violet adornments speaks to me, although if you’d like to go with a true yellow glow then the similar Cosmic Aspirant’s Mace appearance has a paler look and can be purchased from the Shadowlands PVP vendor.

There are a very large number of other maces that I’ll be rotating through as I’m leveling through Midnight: the Lightsworn Hammer and the Merciless Gladiator’s Salvation are classic looks with staying power, the War Mace of Unrequited Love is a lethal-looking crystal torch, and an Infection Repulser is perfect if you love the Light and spiders equally.

I really like the look of the Ghostly Battle Axe for characters who want to cause some bladed damage without the sophistication of a sword. It’s a fairly rare drop that you might find in certain Burning Crusade dungeons if you’re lucky, or you can check the Auction House to see if the Light-infused transmog market aligns with your gold purse’s current contents.

Honorable mention to Legionfoe, purchasable if you’re Revered with the Shattered Sun Offensive. It goes really well with any teal highlights you might have in your chosen Midnight launch day outfit.

I like the idea of charging Xal’atath and her minions while shooting luminous yellow bolts from an Emberhawk Crossbow. If this appeals to you as well, you can run the Arcatraz dungeon a few times until you see it drop. Ve’nari mentioned that she has been to the Maw and she knows what the void fears. Maybe it fears Hunters wielding birds?

The Blazing Skyhawk Repeater is also a fantastic option, with its neon-yellow flowing limbs. You’ll have to catch Cupri during Burning Crusade Timewalking week and save up 1,800 Timewarped Badges.

Elegion, the Fanged Crescent is the clear winner in the one-handed axe category. You can obtain this glowing yellow constellation of choppy goodness from Elegon in Heroic Mogu’shan Vaults. It pairs nicely with Blackhorn’s Mighty Bulwark from Normal Dragon Soul.

A very close second goes to Last Laugh, a drop from Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas. With a mirrored skull blade, horns, spikes, and bones, it’s unquestionably the most metal Light-passing implement on this list. Match this one with a Hero’s Surrender while you’re visiting the most famous of Scourge necropolises.

If your plan for Midnight is to punch the forces of the void into submission, then you’ve got your work cut out for you. Fist weapons have among the least number of transmog options of any weapon slot in the game. I was satisfied with twin Golden Saronite Dragons from Ulduar. The glowing, rotating orb is a nice flair for the sneering draconic head, and they match either a pale yellow or fiery golden ensemble.

The Order-Powered Mechblade is clearly infused with Order instead of Light, but we’re going for looks instead of function. The glowing amber pommel is exactly the sort of detail I was imagining when I cooked up the idea for this list, and the blinding yellow lines on the blade and hilt should make it very easy for healers to spot you in any gloomy zones like Voidstorm. You can pick it up for minimal effort from Gill the Drill for a modest amount of Dragonflight’s Time Rift currency, Paracausal Flakes.

One-handed swords was a tough list to narrow down, but you can also check out the vaguely pirate-ish Blade of Savagery from the Black Temple. Draenei characters should head to Nagrand and collect a Crystalline Kopesh for its crystal blade and golden aura. Finally, Hirukon’s Radiant Reach is an amazing blade that appears to be liquid light, although you’ll have to spend a few hours fishing in Zereth Mortis to even start the process of obtaining it.

The Dark Nail is a twin-bladed polearm burning with what very well could be Light from within. Sure, that’s probably fire instead, since you can pick one up from completing the story quests in Zaralek Cavern. But once again, we’re going for the overall appearance and not nitpicking about the exact source of the glow of each weapon of the Vanguard of the Light.

It doesn’t get much more old school than this: your Hunter can stroll up to the gates of Silvermoon city wielding a Tribute Gun, the very same one seen in the hands of the Dwarf from World of Warcraft’s original opening cinematic, Seasons of War. There are several different versions of the gun across the first few expansions, but this one has a yellow feather which seems hilariously appropriate for a character who doesn’t need to call on the Light because they shoot bullets yet still wants to fit in with their comrades fashion-wise. Alliance characters can spend just a few minutes completing a quest in Dire Maul to earn one.

For a more intense Light-inspired firearm, I kind of like the Copper Cannon if you happened to earn it during one of Plunderstorm’s runs. There’s also the Bronze Blaster, a golden dragon-shaped rifle from a quest in the End Time dungeon.

With its luminous blade, the Stormrune Edge is my chosen two-handed sword option. I really like the contrast with the light blue hilt glow and the little accent on the base of the blade reminiscent of a star-filled sky. You might need a few Ulduar runs to see it drop, but you can reach the Assembly of Iron fairly quickly if you’re solely focused on this one appearance.

Bringing up the rear in the weapon transmog caravan is the wand slot. There are a few decent options such as the Darklight Torch, which gives the impression that you’re wielding a tiny chunk of Beledar on a stick.

However, I’m going to go all the way back to patch 1.11.1 and equip a Starfaller. It looks a bit like a child’s toy fairy wand, and the constant stream of golden sparkles follows you wherever you go. What void-based monstrosity wouldn’t cower before such a dazzling display of Light-based power?
