The Epic Games Store is giving away three games for free this week: Scourgebringer, Songs of Silence, Zero Hour

The Epic Games Store is giving away three games this week, from an incredibly wide array of genres and vibes. While I always advocate you just get the game whether or not you feel like you’ll play it, this week there’s truly something for everyone’s unique gaming tastes.

  • Scourgebringer
    • Release Date: October 21, 2020
    • Game Type: Action, Platformer, Roguelike
    • POV: 3rd person, 2D side-scroller
    • Party: Single player
    • DLC: You can buy the OST and a Supporter Pack, which includes a comic and tons of art.

Scourgebringer is a fun action platformer that’s fairly emblematic of the genre. Find collectibles, dodge bullets, stab your way through thousands of pixels — you know the drill. If you like platformers you’ll love this game, but if not, hey, you may as well pick it up anyway.

  • Songs of Silence
    • Release Date: November 13, 2024
    • Game Type: turn-based strategy, RTS
    • POV: 3rd person, top-down
    • Party: Single player, co-op, PVP
    • DLC: The Lighteaters DLC brings several new hero, city, etc options to the game.

Songs of Silence is a melding of genres. You play and take territories on a map like turn-based games, but also there are head-to-head skirmishes. This is one of those gameplay loop twists that may make for a refreshing change of pace, or make something familiar just a little annoying. It has a gorgeous and unique art nouveau style, which makes it stand out, too.

  • Zero Hour
    • Release Date: September 9, 2024
    • Game Type: team shooter
    • POV: first person
    • Party: Single player, co-op, squad PVP
    • DLC: There are several cosmetics packs for sale.

Zero Hour is a typical squad-based shooter. You can either go with AI teammates and opponents, team up with a friend against AI opponents, or just go full Overwatch style PVP team-based versus. Zero Hour is based on real locations in Bangladesh, and has a gritty real-world feel. You also get a dog companion that you can train to accompany you on missions, which I have very mixed feelings about — I love it when I can have an animal, but hate it when animals get hurt.
