Blizzard Watch Weekly: Blinded by science (or maybe that’s the void)
I can stop staring at the login screen any time I want. Any time I feel like it. I just don’t feel like it right now is all. It’s perfectly fine.
If you, like me, have lost track of the week already I’m here to help with a rundown of what’s happening in the world of our favorite games last week, as well as what’s coming up this week.
What happened last week?
- The Midnight beta test launched on November 11 without transmog, which I think makes it basically unplayable. However, if you’ve gotten a beta invite, we have some tips on how to make the most of your testing time. We may see transmog roll out this week, so fingers crossed, but in the meanwhile I’ll keep staring at the new login screen. It’s perfectly safe.
- New WoW Twitch Drop alert! Pick up these purple pajamas (technically a violet sweatsuit) by watching WoW streamers on Twitch before December 2.
- WoW’s 21st anniversary celebration kicked off on Sunday without anything in the way of fanfare. It’s almost exactly like last year’s, so head out to Tanaris if you’re missing any rewards — or if you want to pick up that lucrative XP/reputation buff. The event is available through December 7.
- Diablo community mainstay Adam Fletcher (PezRadar) announced he’s leaving Blizzard on November 19, and it’s kind of hard to imagine the game without him. Adam is currently the Director of Social and Content Marketing, and we don’t know who will be stepping in to replace him.
- This week’s Hearthstone Tavern Brawl is the All-Star Squad brawl, in which you pick one card for your deck and that’s it. I always like the idea of these brawls to create unique decks, but it almost always turns out there’s a single all-powerful, unbeatable deck that everyone plays (usually Pogo-Hopper).
We’re working on some write-ups on lore figures that play a major role in Midnight, and the first one went out last week, covering the lore behind Lady Liadrin. And in this week’s house decorating news, we have a list of achievements you can work on now to get decor when housing launches next month.
What’s happening this week (and beyond)
- November 18: The second round of BlizzCon tickets go on sale, this time at full price ($290). Get ready to place your order at 9am pacific (12pm eastern) on Tuesday.
- November 18: Legion Remix phase 4 launches, including the Argus zone, Seat of the Triumvirate dungeon, and Antorus the Burning Throne raid. These phases are coming in really fast, and honestly I can’t keep up. Fortunately I don’t have to, because Remix lasts well into January.
- December 2: Patch 11.2.7 launches with Player Housing early access launches. Though we knew housing early access would be in the patch, until last week we didn’t know if the patch itself would launch on the same day — turns out it does.
- Through January 19: Legion Remix
Other things we’re playing, watching, and more
- Our indie game recommendation of the week is Winter Burrow, in which you build a home for an adorable little mouse and try to keep it from freezing to death. Sort of like The Long Dark, but mice.
- The Epic Games Store is giving away three free games this week, with a title to suit any vibe. Pick up Scourgebringer, Songs of Silence, and Zero Hour before Thursday, all for free.
- If you need even more games to add to your backlog, this year’s Indie Game Awards nominees were announced this week, and it is a tremendous list of must-plays. We wrote up the indie game of the year nominees, but every game here is a gem and you should check the full list. The awards go out on December 18.
- We’ve rounded up a list of our favorite TTRPG content creators, from gameplay reviews to actual plays. And no, it’s not just Critical Role (though Critical Role is good too). We actually wrote this last week, but I forgot to link it, so here you go.
- The cutest thing we saw last week was these porcupines. They’re cute, but not cuddly, so be careful.
This week’s podcasts
- Blizzard Watch Podcast: BlizzCon. Beta. Battlestar Galactica.
- Lore Watch Podcast: Deep, cosmic questions from the Diablo and WoW universes
- Tavern Watch Plays Starfinder, Episode 1: We’ll take the third option, where nobody dies
That’s all for now, but another, busier week is already upon us. Let’s get to it.
